J ~ Jell-O

Going through one of my kitchen cupboards this morning I stumbled across a small package of Jell-O.

I keep some on hand to use when I make the flavored marshmallow popcorn balls, but other than that we hardly ever use it.

That is quite different from when I was growing up and Jell-O was a very common choice for dessert. Jell-O puddings, Jell-O molds, Jell-O salads, Jell-O made with extra water so that it didn't set too firmly and then a lot of fruit added to it.

Some Amish communities serve these great big bowls of red and green Jell-O with pineapples at weddings.

My least favorite Jell-O concoction used to be when carrots were shredded and added to orange Jell-O. A very popular choice to be served during the winter when carrots needed to be used before they started going bad.

  1. Oh, ugg. I'm glad to know somebody else doesn't like Jell-O with grater carrots. It wasn't much improved with the addition of cabbage, sad to say.

My mom used to make a cold salad she served at dinner, with raspberry Jell-O and canned diced tomatoes. Use the tomato juice and add water if necessary. It was really good. Guests would ask her what was in it and she'd put them off until they'd eaten some before she'd tell them what it was. They recognized the tomatoes, but never guessed the flavor of the Jell-O.

  2. Yuck! Grated carrots in Jell-O isn't a favorite of mine either. Actually, Jell-O in general is pretty gross and I would say that it is a food that I could go the rest of my life without eating again. My kids like Jell-O occasionally. They must get that from their father! LOL :-)

  3. My mother used to make jello with fruit when I was growing up.

  4. I don't like jello, as to me it feels too slimy. my mom LOVED making it with shredded carrots and pineapple. every holiday. oh mom, so horrible!!!! LOL

  5. thanks for visiting my blog :)

I don't think I would have been fond of having Jell-O with carrots either :) I wonder if Jell-O was used often because it goes a long way? Know what I mean? Can serve a lot of people without a lot of preparation, time and ingredients.

I haven't had Jell-O in years but probably because my kids are grown and out of the house.

  6. When I was a kid Jello was a dessert favorite. I don't have any in our kitchen. My kids can;t stand it.

  7. I still enjoy jello desserts, but the jello salads, like the one with carrots which you described, turned me right off when I first came to Canada.

  8. I love jello! Could never get my kids into it though. My favorite was always strawberry!

  9. I always have a box or two of Jello on hand, but I only use it for Poke Cake... Vanilla cake with strawberry jello, and topped with whipped cream....Mmm mmmm!

  10. We only have jello once a year to remember my husband's grandmother. She always made bromen glass jello cake so we have it every year at Easter.

  11. Thanks for visiting Anabel's Travel Blog recently. What a lovely blog you have. I don't think we have Jello in the UK, and from what most of the comments say, I don't think I've missed anything!

Thank you so much for taking time to comment. I love hearing your thoughts.
