Wednesday Hodgepodge

From this Side of the Pond

1. What takes you out of your comfort zone?

I feel very uncomfortable, uneasy, and decidedly out of my comfort zone when I hear women speak badly of their husband.

2. Your least favorite spice?

This was a hard question since I love cooking and using all kinds of spices. Curry in moderation is good, but is the one spice that I don't really get excited about using.

3. What's a small change you'd like to make?

A small change I want to make before long is rearranging the contents of our desk, filing cabinet, and a cupboard. I'm looking forward to having it done, it will be so much better all around, but the thought of having to do it isn't quite as pleasant.

4. Do you enjoy visiting historic homes? If so, of the homes you've visited which one was your favorite? What historic home near you is open to visitors? Have you been? Southern Living rounded up eleven of the best in the southern part of the US and they're as follows-

Monticello (Jefferson's home in Virginia), Nathaniel Russel House (Charleston SC), Swan House (Atlanta), Ernest Hemingway's home (Key West), The Biltmore (Vanderbilt home in Asheville NC), Mount Vernon (Washington's home in Virgina), San Francisco Plantation (Garyville, Louisiana), Windsor Ruins (Port Gibson Mississippi), Longue Vue House and Gardens (New Orleans), Whitehall (Palm Beach FL), and Pebble Hill Plantation (Thomasville GA)

Have you been to any on the list? Of the homes listed which would you most like to visit?

I haven't been to any historical homes, but would really like to see all the ones on the list, especially Biltmore.

5. What's something you think will be obsolete in ten years? Does that make you sad or glad?

Writing checks, maybe? Online bill pay and credit and debit cards seem to already be the preferred way to handle money for many people. I only see it getting more so over the next ten years.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

Instead of my usual Picture my Week post on Saturday, I opted to do a giveaway instead. (You still have time to enter it here.)

A picture from last week is of LV and Kenneth escorting a bull back to his pasture after he came to visit us, right up next to the house. If you look closely you can see some of the holes he poked in our yard.

I'm not a fan of bulls wandering about our yard, but thankfully he wasn't feeling mean, and didn't present a huge challenge to get him back where he belonged. The owner has now taken him to a different field, so hopefully we won't have to deal with him again.

  1. Just wanted to stop by and thank you for your sweet comment on my blog- so sorry has taken me so long to do so.
I really enjoy your blog. And I totally agree with your number one in what makes you uncomfortable.
    God bless, Lisa :)

    1. Glad I'm not the only one who feels uncomfortable when hearing someone speak badly of their husband.

  2. A bull in the yard! That's something you don't see in my neighborhood!

I do enjoy knowing you better through your hodgepodge answers.

    1. Thankfully a bull in the yard isn't something that happens often. We've lived here now for seven years, and this was the first year we had a problem with that. Twice in a weeks time!

  3. Oh, writing checks - I didn't even think of that!! I think you're right! I so rarely write one any more that I don't even keep my checkbook in my purse! I teach a financial literacy unit each year to high school students and actually have to show them how to fill a check in!

    1. We don't use a lot of checks either. Not like we did 10-15 years ago.

  4. Paying bills online is my preferred method. It easy and convenient. I don't have to worry about someone taking a check out of my mail or buying extra postage stamps. I don't like hearing women speak bad of their husbands, either. I don't know if it's just the women or the husbands are really bad but whatever the case is I think this is something best left to talk over with your husband instead of a group of women. The same goes for men who talk about their wives unfavorably. Yikes, a bull on the loose! I'm glad he was feeling spirited. Thanks for visiting. Have a blessed week!

  5. I seldom write checks, unless I'm sending money to somebody - particularly our daughters. We do write one for church, but they also have a PayPal account.

We've visited Biltmore and Mount Vernon, but some of the others are too far away. We went to see Monticello but there was an hour wait to get on the bus to the house, and others have told us it's a lock-step when you get there; they hustle you through so fast you don't get time to gawk and read things.

    1. Being hurried through a tour is frustrating. We experienced that on a tour through Laura Ingalls Wilder's home in Mansfield Missouri one time. We went through a different time at a much more relaxed pace. A different guide made all the difference.

I had quite forgotten about touring her house when I answered the question about historical homes this morning.

    1. I was glad my husband and son were at home to take care of the wandering bull. Not sure what I would have done if it was only me. I'm not that fond of bulls, and running with one ... not for me!

  7. I love to visit historic homes and see how life was lived back in olden times. A bull in my yard would be a little scary, I live in town so don't think I have to worry!! lol

    1. If only those homes could talk, imagine the stories they have locked up inside of them!

  8. I'm with you on your answer to #1 and others, too. I mentioned curry as well. I enjoyed reading your hodgepodge. Happy week to you!

    1. Yay, someone else who doesn't care for curry that much.

Hope you have a happy week as well.

  9. Oh! I so wish walls could talk in historic homes! I would love to hear what really happened in those homes. My own home is old like before 1850's old. It has been in my family for generations. I would so love to hear the stories from these walls!!!!

  10. I'm not big on curry either. Just a little in one particular dish.
    I love the cow picture.

  11. I've never toured very famous houses but we when we traveled we'd stop in a town and if they had a local "mansion" we'd see if we could tour. I loved to see the rooms, the furniture and pictures on the walls while my DH admired the woodwork ( he was a carpenter all his working days).

  12. Curry, no.
    Historic houses,yes!
We were in France two months ago and toured Claude Monet's home, the famous artist of the bridge above water lilies and such. The gardens still look exactly like he painted them. The house was full of beautiful colors of nature inside. So glad history gets preserved so it comes alive that way.
