Bits and Pieces

First of all a big thank-you to everyone that took time suggest names yesterday!  Because of you I have now been able to settle on the name I'll be using for her.

The children took the camera to the barn the last time they went to visit the kittens. Among the twenty or so pictures they took this was the best one.

Cats aren't really my thing, but baby kittens are so cute you really can't help but love them.

I was searching for some new recipes to try yesterday and happened across one that boggled my mind. It claimed to be a breakfast dish where you were supposed to take a thick slice of homemade bread and pour a cup of coffee over it, sprinkle with a little brown sugar and serve with a hot dog sandwich. It went on trying to tell me that this is the traditional Amish Sunday morning breakfast.

After I gagged for a while I couldn't help but be amused at another weird piece of nonsense some people are trying to tout as fact. I'm not saying that there aren't any Amish people that eat that concoction but I have never met any that do.

  1. My grandfather who was born and raised in rural Indiana (I am 68 so you can figure out how many years ago this was) used to pour a cup of hot black cofee over puffed wheat cereal, add sugar and have that for breakfast. As a child I used to be fascinated watching him fix it in a big bowl like a pasta bowl. No hot dog buns, though.

  7. Glad you were able to decide on a name.

I love cats, especially little kittens!

Sounds like a nasty breakfast. I don't know what it is with people making things up and claiming it to be fact. The thing is that even if it's what happens in your family or community doesn't mean it's what happens in other households or communities. That's why when I'm doing anything about things that are sort of traditions for us - either religeon based or otherwise - I always point out that this is how we do it, but it may be - and quite likely is - different for others. The thing is, even in the same community each household will do a little something differently that will make their habits slightly different to someone else's, so claiming that all people from a certain cultural or religeous group do something a certain way... Well, it can never be entirely accurate.

  8. That doesn't sound like any of the Amish fare I've encountered! Don't the Amish eat the same things we do, such as eggs, biscuits, bacon, pancakes, etc.?

  9. We are English, living in France, and it's fun to see the relief on my son's friends' faces when they realise they DON'T have to eat sausages, egg and bacon which is what they expect all English to eat. We eat cereal and milk and they can have croissants if they like, or pain au chocolate if I have any in. The French always have a small breakfast, but they eat lunch at 12 noon on the dot so I guess they don't need a large start to the day.

  10. Glad we could help with a name.

The kittens are so cute. My kitty is getting so old. 17 years now and he seems to be wanting more and more snuggle time.

AS for the Amuish Breakfast. I have never heard of it eaither and never have I seen it in any of my Amish Cookbooks.

Crazy when people can come up with things like that and actually believe it.

Hope that you are having a wonderful week end.

  12. Good heavens, I hope no one is eating that. If they do, I'm pretty sure they will need medical treatment. :)

  13. In my grandparents' time it was the normal to eat Coffee Soup only on a Sunday morning before going to church. My Grandmother would thicken her coffee with Saltine Crackers and other people would use bread. I finally figured out that the coffee was supposed to have enough caffine to keep them from sleeping during church services.

  14. I once got an email from a friend titled "You Know You're an Ohioan When..." and one line of it is "buying anything with 'Amish' in the name, whether it originated with them or not. That explains Amish Moo Shoo Pork."

  15. Where I live we have a community of Mennonites. A lot of items are sold here claiming to be " Amish " made. The implication is obvious. If it is " Amish " made it is superior quality. Some of the " Amish " must live in Japan and import this stuff. I know little about what Amish peoples may or may not eat but am thinking they are no different in taste than everyone else. It all depends on what you are raised eating. I love eels and a lot of folks wouldn't touch 'em.

  16. Sorry I did not offer any names. On the farm we lived on, we had a lot of barn cats and none of them had names. I even got a baby name book to help me pick out names for our first child. We did do some moving around in the first part of our marriage and I have to day never did we hear of a breakfast as such, does not sound appetizing at all.

  17. I'm not a big cat person either because I'm allergic but they kind of mind their own business so they grew on me - and a kitten?? OH SO PRESH! I've found they attach Amish to so many things - food, sayings, etc. and I just think, 'Uh yeah, I don't think so'. That's too funny - the coffee part didn't sound so horrible with the bread but throw a hot dog into the mix...EEK! :D
