Things I Miss About Being Amish

There are certain things I miss about being Amish.

The biggest is the relationships we lost with family and friends. We knew it would be something that would happen when we made the decision to leave, but even so, there are days when I miss them acutely.

I miss the way the church looked out for each other. We could count on others to have our back. Sure there could be problems that arose among Amish families, but when faced with outside problems everyone stuck together.

I admire their stubbornness in refusing to compromise their way of doing things, and not bowing to the powers that be.

I miss the way you could be open and speak your honest opinion on things without having to dance on eggshells for fear of offending someone. The Amish aren't easily offended, even when they have every right to be offended. That's a big thing I miss in this crazy PC culture.

There are other things as well, but these are some of the main ones.

  1. I think it is those very things that the English find so fascinating because most of us don't have it.

  2. Why do you think the Amish are not easily offended?

  3. Do the Amish have to end relationships when someone leaves?

I absolutely love the way they do not bow to pressure from the outside world. They just do their thing and that's that. Triumph!

I also really admire their lack of taking offense. I imagine it comes from teachings on pride and, well, not taking offense? It's a good trait.

  4. I can understand how you feel. I am estranged from my family and I miss the little church Jack and I attended in my hometown where we all took care of one another and leaned on one another and could be honest with one another.

  5. Those are all things I highly admire about the Amish and can see why you miss them so much. I truly wish things could be different for you and your family. I can understand WHY they sever the relationships when someone leaves, but I can't understand HOW they do it. So very sad for everyone concerned.
I wish our churches stood by one another in the same way.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. I so admire how the Amish are not easily offended...directly related to raising children with high emphasis on forgiveness. From an early age they learn to forgive as quickly as possible.

  7. I have always been mystified by their quickness to forgive outsiders - Nickel Mine School comes to mind - and yet are so unforgiving toward their own people.
