Preparations

I think the thing I miss the most about being Amish is how we never had to worry about being crippled when the power goes out. Wood and kerosene stoves worked equally well in all kinds of weather. The air pump in our well kept right on working, and all our gas lamps kept on performing just fine.

Most days I wouldn't even dream of exchanging the convenience of electricity, but days like today it can be a teensy tiny bit tempting. It looks like the weather could get bad soon. With lots of ice and wind. It has started already. So the bathtub has been filled with water, as well pails, and gallon jars. Some food has been prepared that we'll be able to enjoy without having to heat it later.

I'm hoping all this preparing wasn't necessary, but I would rather be prepared and the power stays on, than waiting until we lose it before we do anything.

Looks like another perfect day to try some crafty type things. Like these cute spring daffodils the girls made.

  1. 'Be Prepared', a good motto! Living on an island, I know the drill well!
The jonquils (paper and perhaps small paper muffins liners?) are a grand idea! Nifty!

  2. It's good that you think ahead like that. The closest we get to that is having an oil lamp and oil handy on top of our freezer, and plenty of candles. I commend you, but hope you don't need to use the "extras."

I love the sweet flower crafts!

  3. I hope you don't need the extras either but way to be prepared! It's kind of a good feeling, I think, knowing you won't be scrambling if something should happen. Those flowers are adorable - cute little party favors or place settings for the springtime. ♥

  5. We used to do similar preparations when we lived on the Gulf coast and received hurricane warnings. Now that we live on the Montana prairie very far away from town and neighbors we have set up and maintain an on-goin emergency supply system.
Praying your weather holds and you don't need to utilize your preparations.

  7. When I was growing up, we LOVED having the electricity go out. My parents would build a fire and let us roast hot dogs and marshmallows. Somehow, I doubt it was quite as much fun for them. This is not the main reason I have a gas stove, but it's a bonus - I can cook even if the power's out.
(By the way, I'm enjoying Life With Lily - by the time I got around to ordering it, A New Home for Lily was out so I have both of them.)
