Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Is your home air conditioned? If it's not air conditioned, is that by choice? Did you grow up with air conditioning? If not how did you cope with the heat? Share about a time or place you remember as being too hot-the temperature kind of hot, lest anyone be confused.

We don't have air conditioning in our home. I would love to change that, but for the most part it isn't too terrible with the windows open and plenty of fans in use.

When we were Amish and even fans weren't an option we used to get somewhat used to the heat. Being bare footed certainly helped, and on the hottest days the basement used to feel pleasantly cool if we needed some relief.

The hottest I have ever felt was when we were traveling through Texas one summer and stopped at a motel. It was 108ยบ outside, but when we opened the door to our motel room the heat that came rushing out was almost enough to knock you over.

We turned the air conditioning on high and went to do something else for an hour or so in hopes our room would be cooled down considerably by the time we got back.

2. What's something in your life right now that falls under the heading 'up in the air'?

Some decisions that have to be made. Not really something that's ready to be discussed here.

3. Your favorite light and airy dessert?

A Fruity Fluff Pudding. I haven't made it in years, but it used to be the perfect refreshing summer dessert.

4. When did you last feel like you were 'floating on air'?

This answer seems a little silly compared to some of the major life changing 'floating on air' experiences I have had, but I love the feeling I get when our next years supply of curriculum arrives.

5. Airport, airmail, airtight, airhead...which have you most recently encountered? Explain.

Going with airhead on this one, and not the candy version.

A certain person was trying to say that hunting for meat or raising your own for butchering was simply barbaric when you could simply go to a store to buy meat instead and no innocent animals would have to suffer.

It's amazing to me how out of touch with reality some people can be.

6.  Have you ever been to the Alps? If so where did you go? If not, is this a destination on your must-see list? If you were headed that direction this summer, which of the following would be your preferred activity...a gentle walk, a serious walk, a bike ride, a boat ride around one of the lakes, or summer snow skiing?

I have never been to the Alps, though it has been one of my dreams ever since I read Heidi as a little girl. I'm doubtful I will ever get to see them in person. If I were to go my preferred activity would be a gentle walk and a boat ride around one of the lakes.

7. What is one saying or phrase that was considered 'cool' when you were growing up?

You know, this is one I have no answer for. 'Cool' sayings were highly discouraged in our home. We were taught that we will one day have to give an account for every unnecessary word spoken. We didn't use sayings, phrases, or other words to strengthen statements.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

A little over a month ago we got several baby kittens. I could spend hours watching them play, and I'm not even a cat person.

One of the sweetest things is watching our dog, Gypsy, try to take a nap with three kittens snuggled up next to him. He tolerates them very well, until they want to start playing on top of him, or with his ears.

  1. Thank you for stopping by. Those kittens sound adorable. Haven't ever tried fruity fluff pudding I might have to give it a try.

  2. Your answer for the "air" question reminds me of answers I get quite frequently at school for the question, "where do we get milk from?" So many kids will say "the store"!

  3. It was always so exciting to get all our homeschool curriculum and supplies in the mail. Two years we used Calvert and everything, everything! came in one big box.

  4. It never surprises me anymore how people think when wanting to convince themselves they are right (answer to #5). Kittens sound too adorable.

  5. Stopping by from the Link Up to say Hi!

  6. Definitely a great answer on #5. Some people just don't get it.
I like that you were discouraged about the words you used. We weren't allowed to use the euphemisms for bad words, such as golly and others. We also were forbidden to use phrases such as, "by the way." I wonder if that is similar to what you are referring to. I still remember my Dad scolding me for saying by the way.

  7. Had to laugh at #5. I loved reading Heidi too and I'm jealous of your kittens. We are down to one elderly cat and not sure hubby will want to get another when the time comes.

  8. I am thank technology has advanced and we have wireless thermostats. We can adjust out AC with an app on our phone so by the time we are home it will be cool. I am thinking that is the only way to survive that Texas heat! I bet it was adorable to see Gypsy and the kitties snuggling together!

  9. Lots of great answers that were fun to read. I had to shake my head at #5. Some people truly are clueless aren't they? I don't tolerate heat well at all and I am very grateful for air conditioning. Have a wonderful day!
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  10. On my trip to the alps I saw sheep on the hillside, and the whole view was like a scene out of "Heidi". I immediately thought of that!! We had a kitty cat have babies in our bushes a few years back...and I absolutely loved watching them, and caring for them until they were old enough to give away... which then turned into a nightmare. The shelters were full - and nobody wants more kitties!! Good luck to you! I finally found homes for mine, but had them all fixed - and up to date with shots.

  11. I think your answer to #5 gave several of us amusement, probably because we all know someone like that. On the other hand, perhaps it is not always so amusing is it. Enjoyed your answers today as usual. Enjoy the rest of your week.

  12. I've always wanted to go to Switzerland; I even took French in high school so I would be ready. Ah, well. When we didn't want the girls to know what we had to say The Squire and would speak either French or Cherokee to each other.

And I do agree about #5. Do these people think meat grows in test tubes? Local son-in-law, grandson, and grandson-in-law all hunt, and eat every bit. I don't eat meat at all, but sometimes they will give Hubby a steak or some jerky; he puts it in the freezer and then, bless him, forgets he has it until it is so freezer burnt we have to give it to the dog.

  13. I've been to the German and Austrian Alps - not the Swiss, French, or Italian Alps. They are truly beautiful, and well worth a visit (I'm sure the Swiss/French/Italian Alps are also - I just didn't make it there on my one trip to Europe.)

German is by far the predominant language in Switzerland (and, obviously, in Germany and Austria), so maybe your Amish roots would help.

The kittens sound adorable. When I was growing up, our dogs were always very tolerant of our cats/kittens as well. I remember coming home one day to find our Labrador retriever looking sadly at her dog bed, which had been taken over by the cat. The dog never barked or even tried to push the cat away - she just waited until we rousted the cat out and restored her nap place.

  15. I love kittens! we have one but she's a full size cat and will turn one next month. She's behaved a lot better which is good but she and the dog like to wrestle which is funny to watch sometimes then I have to put a stop to it. Hope you will post pics of your kittens. :)

  16. 5 made me wonder about people. Can you imagine a butcher's shop with a sign saying 'No animals were hurt in the production of this meat'??

  17. Heidi was one of my favorite books as a young girl. Airhead would fit the person who talked about no animals being hurt for meat!! Crazy

  18. I love the name of your blog. One of my friends just asked people on FaceBook to give her ideas and strategies on keeping a positive outlook. Just the title of your blog suggests you know it well! Hope you have a great week!

  19. Shaking my head at 5. Wow. I wish we were all more mindful of excessive words. I wouldn't have much big a blog, though!

  20. That was definitely an airhead comment....LOL! The kittens laying with your dog sounds so precious.

  21. Heidi was one of my mom's favorite books. I haven't read it in years. Maybe I need to change that. I think it's wise to teach people to express themselves without using useless words. A friend recently quoted his teacher as saying, "You boys are smart enough to use better words to express your thoughts, and if you aren't smart enough, get smart enough." I think I want to remember that when I hear someone swearing in public.

  22. Thank you for the reminder that we are accountable for every idle word we speak. This is truly from God's Word and something we all need to remember.

  23. I visited Texas once and it was way too hot for me. Your dessert sounds delicious.

  24. I know the feeling you describe with new curriculum. I feel the same with beautiful paper, journals and books. Enjoy your day...stay cool!

  25. Oh, I bet that's adorable with the kittens and your dog.

  26. I have met the same type of airheads that you have. Your Random Thought is cute. I love watching animals playing with each other. I enjoyed your answers to the Hodgepodge.
