First Time Laundry Adventures

Doing the laundry was going great with only clothes for two people instead of a big family. I was pinning everything to the clothes line enjoying the beautiful spring weather. I tried to make sure everything was fastened securely because of the wind. I had thought I was used to wind but had not been prepared for the wind that constantly swept across the farm.

The light weight laundry basket was setting on the grass next to me. Teddy, the half grown Border Collie pup seemed to enjoy watching me as he lay on the grass next to the clothes line post. Pinning another piece on the line I wasn't too happy when an extra gust of wind sent my laundry basket rolling across the yard scattering clothes as it went. I ran after it trying to gather everything up but every time I almost reached the run away items another gust would come along and whisk them out of my reach again. Teddy apparently thought this looked like a fun game and went chasing after clothes as well and caught an article of clothing and went running for the barn with it.

I chased after him horrified that he had to choose that particular piece and knowing that my father-in-law was in the barn. I was preparing to be more embarrassed than I had ever been when he paused and I was able to get it away from him. I went to gather up the remaining laundry and the basket that were now caught in the blueberry bushes behind the house. Taking everything back to the basement I rinsed them before hanging them outside to dry. This time I used a five gallon pail in hopes that it wouldn't blow away as easily.

  2. Oh poor you! I expect you made sure that never happened again but no doubt we have all experienced the same thing at some time or another. Your blog has me enthralled.

  3. Sounds like an adventurously windy washing day you had that almost went to the dogs has now become a fond memory. Reminds me of this past summer when I visited a historical village where people portray life in the 1890's. I went wearing an old vintage dress that could almost pass for "correct period garb" and was told I could get in free if I would volunteer at one of the houses. Thus, I promptly became the washerwoman with bucket, basin, lye soap, washboard, water, clothes, clothesline, and clothespins, etc. All was well until the thunderstorm hit ...

  5. What a sight that must have been seeing you chasing that laundry basket! Thankfully, I can hang my laundry from the confines of my enclosed kitchen porch as the start of the reeled line is just outside the window.

  6. Darn wind!!! One of my sisters tells of the time she put the clothes out to dry, then decided to do some yard clean-up and gathered a bunch of waste in the burn pile. Very carefully checking the direction of the wind, she set her fire and lit it - all was well while the dry stuff burnt, then just as the wet grasses caught......the wind shifted - and all that smoke went into her clean clothes!!! Sigh!

  7. I enjoyed this post so much...your way with words made me feel I was watching you the whole way...I had to giggle at the dog running with the clothes, although I'm sure at the time you weren't giggling at all.
    Thanks for the wonderful posts.

  11. Great post on First Time laundry. Reminded me of hanging clothes on the line in winter in Colorado and trying to figure out whether or not they were dry - since they were also frozen solid.

    Ah, the good times. :)

  12. I can just picture you running around after the clothes. :-)
I live in a town house and have no yard. But I hang my clothes out on lines on my second story deck. When an item of clothing blew off my line once I had to go down stairs out the door and chase after it.

  14. Delightful! My mother hung laundry outside to dry on clear days; and in our basement during Winter. I loved watching her work, and often enjoyed helping her gather up clothing when a wind came up, or rain threatened.

Such simple, humble & memorable times. Thanks for sharing,

    Kathleen

  15. During this last arctic blast I remembered to be thankful for my automatic dryer. I'll wait until the weather is a good bit warmer before I start hanging clothes outside again.

Guess the load from a big family helps weigh the basket down, huh?

  17. Chased a few wind blown clothes myself. Seem to do it every spring!

Chased a dog carrying a garment of mine one time, too, but at least it was inside :-)

  18. Hi,

I came over from Deanna's blog, and I've been reading some of the posts. They are wonderful, and - in some cases, such as this one - very amusing. I look forward to reading more! :)

  19. With the "Cape Doctor" blowing on most days, sometimes to gale force, I can relate! But, it doesn't make me want to use my tumble dryer....the savings outweigh any hassles with the wind any day! I'm wondering if 'pinning' is the same as 'pegging'...must be. I've lived here 20.5 years now, and don't always remember my "Americanese"! Blessings from Cape Town, South Africa
