I find it a little amusing how our children get all excited when ever they see a horse and buggy drive down the road. And what is even more amusing I always have to pause what I'm doing and watch them drive by.
It was only several years ago when we were the ones sitting inside the buggy instead of creeping behind them in a vehicle waiting for a safe place to pass.
And when the opportunity presented itself I had to take this picture, and naturally once I had taken it I felt the need to share it with you.
Since we were raised in a community where tractors (with steel wheels) were used for farming for everything except planting corn, seeing a team of horses was quite rare. And since Daddy had a wood working shop instead of a farm the only horses I was around until after we got married were our buggy horses.
I really don't mind that the tables have turned and that I no longer am the one in the buggy. I will continue to admire the horses and enjoy the content happy expressions of the children inside those buggies. But I will watch for a safe place to pass and smile and wave at them as I do so.

We were in Lancaster, PA in March for a few days. Our visit cut short as M-i-L taken ill and we had to return home. Our youngest daughter and her oldest daughter who had just turned four were with us. The four year old was so interested in the "horsies with wheels". Papa gave her mom money for her to take the 4 year old on a buggy tour. That was all she could talk about for weeks.
ReplyDeleteI too love seeing the buggies when we drive thru Amish Country. I have one question for you while I'm thinking about it. I don't recall exactly where we were but when driving thru one Amish Community, we noticed all the doors were painted an aqua color. Do you know the purpose of this. I've always wanted to know. I even looked online but couldn't find anything.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day,

great picture. I'm reading an Amish fiction series,Sisters of the Quilt by Cindy Woodsmall,at the moment. Good reading.
ReplyDeleteI always pause when I see a buggy and carriage. There is something in my heart that just leaps when I see this. I will just continue to learn from my books about these quaint people. I am sure there is something new I can learn from reading life experiences with the
ReplyDeleteAmish.
You must come visit Sherry & my blogs writes of the past few posts ... I took Sherry up there for her visit & we captured exquisite photos ... one of a team of horse drawn plows in the field turning the soil.
ReplyDeleteLove your team of horses picture.

What a great photo - the country side is lovely.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your post. I have captured a few pics of the Amish buggies and horses on our travels thru Missouri. I treasure one where they are out in the field loading hay with a team of horses and the wagon. Priceless. I enjoy reading your posts. Thanks for sharing your heart with us!
ReplyDeleteuntil next time... nel
I am still around Amish in Sarasota but the Amish that live here year round get around on bikes, or public transportation. The Amish that come down for vacation leave their horse and buggy at home. So I know when I go up to Ohio I act and am a tourist of sorts.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see horse drawn buggies rather than cars any day.Having that method of transport kind of gives a calmer aura. The gentle clip, clop of hooves.Lovely.We still use horse and buggy for weddings here and the occasional funeral.A nice way to travel.
ReplyDeletewe visited new york last summer. as we would be driving on the freeways we would see the black buggy and horse on the side roads. i loved it. i think it just reminds me of a simpler life that would be so wonderful sometimes!
ReplyDeletePretty picture. Makes me miss LaGrange Co, IN, my second home.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean. We left the Amish while 3 of our children were quite young and they marvel over the Amish ways that we use to practice and thought nothing of it. It was just the way you did it! Now it is a novelty to them!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful photo thank you!
ReplyDeleteBest regards of France
What a lovely picture. I'm sure that it must seem strange to you at times to be on the "other" side of this. I really enjoy reading your blog!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Laura
