Wednesday Hodgepodge

From this Side of the Pond

1. Can you believe we're rolling in to the Labor Day weekend? What's a project you'll labor over this fall?

Labor Day seems to come sooner every year. Weird how time does that the older you get.

I don't have a specific project in mind for this fall. Though judging by how our storage room and attic look, I should take care of them.

2. Tell us about the best perks you ever had in a job?

Of everything that I've ever done, nothing comes close to the perks I enjoy of being a mother.

3. August 31st is National South Carolina Day. Have you ever been to SC? Any desire to go? According to Southern Living, these are the top ten things to do in South Carolina...

Explore Charleston, bike, golf or relax on Hilton Head Island, see the beach and the boardwalk at Myrtle Beach, visit the state museum in the capital city Columbia, observe the wildlife and natural beauty of the Ace Basin, take a walk or hop on a trolley and check out Greenville's charming main street, visit Fort Sumter where the Civil War began, stroll through Pearl Fryar's Topiary Garden in Bishopville leaving time to check out The Button Museum, also in Bishopville, see Morgan Island (also known as Monkey Island)-home to nearly 4000 Rhesus monkeys.

Which is most appealing to you today? If you're a SC native, resident, or frequent visitor what would you add to the list?

We have been to South Carolina several times. We haven't explored everything Charleston has to offer, but we have enjoyed the Straw Market and the girls and I spent a day with a friend who knew all the best thrifting spots.

There are a lot of places I'd like to go, see, and experience. South Carolina wouldn't be my first choice mostly because of the heat.

4. Beef, pork, country-style, barbecued, baby back, spare or short...your favorite kind of rib? What's a dish you enjoy that really 'sticks to your ribs'?

Pork or baby back ribs would be my choice.

A dish I really enjoy that sticks to the ribs is our favorite Mexican meal. We're planning on having it today.

5. What's one important skill you think every person should have? Why?

I think everyone should know how to cook. At least the basic skills of cooking, so they can eat without having to rely on prepared foods.

Growing up in a culture where men didn't do anything in the kitchen, my Mom went against the grain and taught all my brothers how to cook a few dishes, and bake bread and cookies. I'm sure their wives appreciate that a lot.

I wanted all our children to learn as well. The girls can cook and bake anything. Kenneth has his favorite dishes he cooks, not the biggest variety, but enough that he could comfortably fend for himself if needed, and he can follow recipes so really, I think he's set.

Steven has always LOVED the kitchen and really wants to cook. I've started allowing him to do some things with careful supervision. If he keeps this up he'll be our best chef.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

One of LV's nephews is spending a few days with us. We're hoping to go hiking this afternoon if the weather remains favorable.

  1. I agree that boys should learn how to do basic household things like cooking! And motherhood definitely has the best perks.

    1. A few of my brothers learned how to sew as well, and enjoyed it, though it was something they didn't want their friends to know. LOL

  2. Speaking of the weather - does it look as if you are going to get any of Hurricane Harvey? We are on our way to Canton, NC, and the event has already been moved indoors.

    1. Yes, it looks as if Harvey is going to bring us some rain. Have fun in NC!

  3. You're so right about the perks of motherhood!
Good for you for teaching the guys of your household how to cook a few things, so they can fend for themselves, if needed.
Hope that hike is possible today. Looks like rain here.

    1. The hike was possible. The weather stayed absolutely gorgeous, sunny, but not too warm.

  4. I taught both of my boys to cook, clean and do laundry right alongside their sister. They both have used those skills, although our 28 year old who is single and lives on his own in Japan, appreciates it the most. He's always thanking me for making them learn those skills. He also asks for family favorites recipes when he gets particularly homesick!
When I was homeschooling all three children, I also made them learn to type on an old-fashioned typewriter which they complained about at the time. Now they all thank me for that too, because it was impossible to backspace and cover up their mistakes. They learned to type with accuracy and then added speed. The boys both have jobs in which they are on the computer a lot and our daughter is an RN. They all thank me for making them learn the more difficult way as it has helped them in their careers.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. I hadn't considered those advantages of learning to type with a typewriter. I'll have to keep my eyes open for one now.

  5. I agree with you, of all the jobs I have had over the years, being a mom is the greatest one of all. My 4 brothers are all great cooks. Mom made sure they knew how to cook along with us 3 girls. They also do a good cleaning job and laundry too. My son and both my sons in law are very good cooks as well and pitch in with the laundry, cleaning, whatever needs doing. Plus they are good daddies :-) Wendy

  6. South Carolina has been cooling earlier this summer and already there's time that I feel fall--like late night and early morning. Do you ever come to Columbia?

    1. We've never stopped at Columbia. Our South Carolina time usually revolves around Charleston and Sullivan's Island.

  7. To learn to cook, clean, and to take care of animals are important skills and needful. If you eat you should cook. Why? If you do not learn to care for yourself, then who will? Male and female should view food as survival skills. A part of life. Life is unpredictable. Better to have those sills and not need them than it is to need them and not have them. None of my adult children have married yet. They all work, and have their own places. None have hired cooks...lol...so I assume they cook.

  8. I meet a lot of women these days who can't/don't cook which is kind of sad to me. I love to eat out, but can't imagine doing it all the time. My hubs makes a great omelette and is a master of the grill. He can fend for himself in the kitchen, but I love to cook so do most of it myself. Enjoy your day!

  9. Yes, the perks of being a mom top out any other job, I think. My husband is a great cook, my son specializes in outdoor cooking and my grandson loves preparing his favorite meals. So, I am in complete agreement that men should be comfortable in the kitchen. Trust you were able to make the hike before we send Harvey your way.

  10. When in South Carolina, do take the time to look up The Cotton Museum in Bishopville. History of the plant in the U.S.A., along with its cultural significance, ol' boll weevil, slavery, Civil War, rebuilding of commerce in war torn areas and its continued impact and importance today. Did you know our paper money holds a significant amount of cotton?
