Cows

Only several steps from our back door there is a field on a steep hillside where every summer someone puts their cows in to graze.
Somehow even though they attract flies, I enjoy seeing and watching them.
There's something about seeing a cow grazing peacefully that makes me feel that everything is all right in the world.
I have come to the conclusion that people every where would be happier if only the could spend their free time on a back porch watching a cow and her calf interact, simply watching them graze, being mesmerized by their swishing tails. Listening to them eat grass. Yes, really. I don't know of much of anything that sounds better or tastier than a cow enjoying grass. (Well ... maybe a horse eating hay, but we don't have any horses.) They make it sound so good!

There's something so peaceful and simple about this pair. They're not worried about anything other than family and food.
Can you imagine the stress free life we could have if we detached ourselves from most everything else, especially social media. Instead of being bombarded by angst filled political views, incessant chattering on modesty, and wearying arguments concerning a vast range of subjects on everything from parenting styles, diets, education, medicine, flat earth (yes really) and basically anything else you can think of.
Here's something I never imagined I would ever say, but I think I want to be more like a cow, and focus only on what's important. I'll still pop into Facebook occasionally, but I won't be spending a lot of time there.

  1. Yes! I have been distancing myself from Facebook for several months just because of these reasons. Instagram too. I still have my favorite blogs that I follow, but I haven't been on social media nearly as much lately and it makes for a much more peaceful life. Love your cow picture. We recently drove from Washington state to Nebraska. I knew I had finally arrived back home when we reached South Dakota and I saw the endless fields with the cattle. I can't even describe the feeling it gave me to be back in the familiarity of the Midwest with all of the farms.

Yes....this sounds like Heaven. They say there is no wifi in Heaven and this is why! :)

But...flat earth? What. Do not make me google.

    1. Yes, flat earth. There are some who firmly believe it and talk about it a LOT. I hadn't realized anyone believes it until this past year or so.

  3. I was so tickled to read this because I love cows. On our way home from anywhere we have to travel through miles of corn, soybeans, cows, pigs, sheep, horses etc... and though I love all of it, cows are my favorite. A couple of hours ago we were watching some cows standing chest deep in a pond and others hanging out with ducks. I would not go near a bull ( I was charged by one once), but I think they are magnificent looking creatures and I frequently take time to admire them. I feel very blessed to be able to live a rural life and when I leave the outskirts of even a small city and head into the country I feel the tension leaving me. I have never joined facebook, not that I haven't been tempted, but I truly do not have time to be involved at all with that. If I did have time and joined I am sure it would tempting to get involved with conversations. We like to sit on our porch swing, talk face to face with each other & with passersby, and just watch people and whatever entertainment nature provides.

    1. Entertainment nature provides ... love that.

I rarely join conversations on Facebook, never if the subject is controversial or has the potential to become heated ... but I do see them.

  4. By far the best advice I have heard in a long time. :) Life really is ALOT less complicated than we make it for ourselves. Thanks. Have a great day and God bless. :) Oh and Hello from Ohio!!! :)

    1. Thanks.

Why do we make our life more complicated than it needs to be?

  5. What a sensible post. I don't go on any social media, I have more than enough to cope with in my life. I do feel that whilst some of it is useful, it also encourages unpleasantness.

    1. It's unfortunate how much unpleasantness comes out on social media.

  6. I live directly across from a farm, I am a daycare provider so we love to go out and watch the mama's and babies together. I walk each morning about 6:15 with my neighbor and we often take pictures of the cows in the fog, in the sunrises etc. They are so peaceful. I too, have taken a HUGE step back out of facebook, I don't tweet, or whatever else they do, but I am so tired of the drama? the lead on's to get people to ask what's wrong honey? Ugh! So I would rather not be on it. I enjoy your blog and a few others as well. Take care and enjoy the rest of the summer we have. Wendy

  7. I am a huge lover of horses, but cows are a close second. Animals enjoy their time eating and with their offspring. You are correct about how nice it would be if we could do the same.

    1. Wouldn't it though ... I realize that is somewhat unrealistic, but backing away from spending as much time on social media certainly helps me.

  8. I agree with your thoughts on the peacefulness of watching a cow. I think that's why I choose to make a cow the subject of my paintings so often.

  9. Painting a cow shouldn't be difficult; it's getting them to stand still that's a problem.

However - The Squire has a cousin, a retired Air Force pilot, who FIRMLY believes the earth is flat, coz' the Bible speaks of the four corners of the earth. He admits it *looks* round, but that's only to test our faith. I've never had the nerve to ask him if he also thinks it's square.

And, believe it or not, there's another group that will tell you the earth is the center of the universe.

  10. Thanks for your comment on my blog. We do have cows and although they like chewing grass and mooing, they are really paying for their board by giving us lots of milk. One thing for sure, they poop a lot too. It's a lot of work cleaning all this up but that's not so bad because manure becomes rich compost and makes things grow.

Because we have cows, people can enjoy their coffee with cream and cereal with milk in the morning. They can enjoy cheese on their pizza or favorite casserole or on plain crackers even ice cream or whipped cream for put on their dessert.

I'm delighted that you enjoy watching a cow graze in the field near your place.

    Hugs, Julia

  15. Love your blog... we live out in the middle of a 100+ acre farm, and love it here! We too, have a few beef cattle and enjoy watching the babies play together! Horses are my fav. but ours were with us for over 30 years, and are sorely missed by me! Will hate to downsize, and one day leave the farm! It is such a good place to raise a family ~ Blessings to you.
