Silence

The house seems too quiet, everyone is talking in hushed tones and even moving about more quietly. After all these years I have discovered the reason behind our noisy family must be because the children have a noisy mother. You see, I have lost the ability to speak. I can whisper, but only when absolutely necessary.

I have had trouble with a growth of sorts in my throat for a long time already, but was putting off getting serious about getting help for it. Lately it has been getting much worse, so bad in fact I was having trouble swallowing food, almost every bite had to be washed down with water and sometimes that wasn't even working.

For the next month I'll be not using my voice, anyone that knows what a chatterbox I am knows how difficult this is looking to me. No talking, no singing, no laughing out loud. I never realized just how much I did of all three until that was taken from me.

I'm hoping by the end of the month things will be getting better and I won't have to do much more serious treatment. Surgery scares me, and I don't want to go that route unless I have to.

  1. I do hope you will soon be well.
May I tell you how much I have enjoyed reading the Lily series, encouraged by a free offer for the first one! They are so true to life, and without the constant interjections of another language (ie Daed) which is so common in other 'Amish' novels.

  2. Heavens! The only thing I can think of that would be worse than not being able to talk would be not being able to have chocolate. Or cats.

When my sister developed ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) one of the first things she lost was the ability to speak. We had to write notes or use sign language. The funny thing - which you have noticed - is that when one person can't talk the others are silent, too. Lynn would write a note, and I'd write one back, instead of talking to her. She wasn't deaf!

  4. I am only mentioning this because my mother had it. First, the doctor will check your esophogus and give you something to relax you. Sometimes your esophogus just needs stretching. This is all easy I have had this done. If it happens to be more they will need to scan with an MRI I believe. Please do not put this off one more day. Please....not to stress you but to know you are alright is the most important.

  10. Dear Mary Ann,
Please go to a dr. as soon as possible to rule out anything other than just a sore throat. The warning bells rang when I first read this as it paralleled a friend from my past. I urge to please go to a dr. I won't give details but a quick visit to your dr. asap.
