Barn Raising

I got up this morning to a typical November day. Dull gray skies, drab brown fields, and bare trees  waiting for snow to come. The perfect type of day to be in a nice cozy warm house with cheerful lights, and plans to get some Christmas sewing done.

I still use my treadle sewing machine and still like having it right inside the window. The first load of laundry was swishing merrily in the soapy depths of the washing machine while I prepared to get the sewing machine threaded and ready to go when I heard the distinct sound of a horse and buggy approaching.

One buggy followed the next and I couldn't help but watch with interest as the men parked the buggies and unhitched the horses and then walk to where a new barn is being built.

I'm not sure how much sewing I will get accomplished today since watching a barn raising while sewing doesn't work the best. I predict a fun day ahead!

  1. One thing I've never seen is a barn raising. Well, there are a lot of things I've never seen but a barn raising is real close to the top because I want to so badly. I'm off today so maybe I'll fly up there and we can go watch together, then I'll fly back home for supper. I wish!

  4. How awesome that would be to see a barn raising.

  5. So I guess that means you still live near some Amish families. Are you acquainted with them, or does your having left make such friendships difficult?

  6. Our November has been a bit gloomy also and took used the rainy days to get some sewing done last week. I made myself a couple of dresses since I can't seem to find anything suitable in the stores these days.

A barn raising! What fun! How I wish to have your "front row" seat to watch.

    Happy Thanksgiving Mary Ann.

    Blessings,

    Betsy

  7. I have often read about the barn raisings. How interesting to watch one. You may not be able to take photos but it would be nice to see any.

  8. Never having seen an Amish barn raising, I was excited when we put up one of our own. Friends and family came to help, though it wasn't done in the traditional manner -- this was a metal barn. Food, fellowship, fun and a day of very hard work. It was wonderful.

  9. Your post brings back memories of treadle sewing machines and Amish barn raising. Do you know who gets the new barn? Also do you have any neighborly doings with the Amish? Years ago I used to know a few families from Somerset PA.

  10. Whenever I would go visit my grandparents when I was a child, on Sunday mornings we would always hear that familiar clip clop as the buggies drove by. My brothers and I would run to the window to watch them as long as we could before we had to leave for church ourselves. I've never seen a barn raising, but I can imagine it would be awesome to watch. And very distracting from sewing! :)
