Raspberries

Picking berries used to be so much fun when I was a little girl. We would head out early in the morning before the sun got too warm armed with empty ice cream pails. Wearing our coolest clothes and for Mom and me a thin homemade bandanna tied in the back under our hair bun instead of our regular coverings.

I didn't mind all the scratches we got from the thorns on the raspberry and blackberry bushes. Going berry picking was much too special to be concerned about that. As we picked Mom would tell stories from when she was a little girl or we would all sing while we picked.

When our pails were full we would head home to make pie, cobbler, jams, and a special canned pudding to enjoy during the winter.

We have several berry plants behind the house and I was keeping an eye on the berries hoping to get them before the birds do once they ripen.

Turns out I didn't need to worry about the birds. Last week one morning I heard this strange sound and when I went to investigate I found Midnight, a heifer Sailor made his pet leaning over the fence and taking her great big tongue and stripping the berries and leaves off those plants. By the time she got done there wasn't much left of  the berry bushes.

  1. Ha, I didn't realize a cow would eat berries! We had a horse once who loved persimmons, and my horse loves cantaloupe, so I guess there are plenty of different taste buds in the animal kingdom.
We took our kids berry picking every year. They loved it, and loved the blackberry cobbler even more.

  2. Is it time to put that cow in the freezer? jk
Anyways, after seeing our 5 month old puppy pick blackberries and eat them I don't at all doubt the cow did. 0.0
I did manage to pick enough for a cobbler & had a quart left to freeze.

  4. LOL! That's why around here we say that when it comes to cows..."Fences are merely suggestions!"

I've never been berry picking but it would be worth every scratch when I bit into a juicy cobbler. YUM!

  5. Your berry-eating-cow reminds me of the time my horse leaned over her fence and ate all my mothers ripe tomatoes, then all the green ones, then the plants!

I also have find memories of picking wild blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and wineberries - and the wonderful jams and jellies my mom made from them.

  6. I too remember picking blackberries when I was a girl. My mom made the best blackberry cobbler! Wish I had some now!

  7. Our middle daughter once tied the horse too close to the garden, and Rosie simply cleaned us out. She ate everything - corn, string beans, the pea vines, you name it. We got rid of the poor horse not too long after that. Actually, I'd have rather kept Rosie and gotten rid of the daughter, but our state has some funny laws...

  10. I love berries, and used to love berry picking when I was a child. I also have a nice memory of shortly before I lost my sight when my Dad and I went on a nature walk and did some berry picking. We only picked a few for ourselves and didn't take any home that day though. I loved it though, because it was one of the few times I went somewhee with my Dad just the two of us. I was almost 22, but I felt like a kid again!

  11. I wish id do more of picking my own fruit of vegetables , but there's something about picking your very own that somehow makes what you have picked taste just a little better. Richard

  12. Pecan picking, but never berry picking as a child. Long story. But, I'm much more interested in whether or not you might post the recipe for that special canned pudding???

  13. Picking blackberries was a big adventure for me, when I was a child. My husband recently graduated as a baker, and he should make a pie with it one day. I'll ask him.
