The Answer and a Question

So what did we do with Plastic Spray and wax paper?

A few of you guessed correctly. In the one community we lived we used to spray a new covering with plastic spray to make that it holds its  shape better and when ever we wanted to iron it we had to use a sheet of wax paper between the iron and the covering to keep it from melting and sticking to the iron.

Now I have a few questions for you. Recently I stumbled across a list of fun things for boys to do. Sailor has done most of it but there were two items that I had never heard of before.

  1. Make a grass trumpet.
  2. Play conkers.
Can anyone help me out?

  1. Conkers is new to me but is explained here:

I've played many a grass trumpet though. You hold a blade of grass between your thumbs lengthwise as the thumbs are held parallel to each other and blow into the hole where the grass can be seen between the first and second thumb joints. It was fun years ago.

  2. Have never heard of Conkers, but here's another site...

I'm not sure what grass trumpet is unless it's what Magnolia mentioned above.

  3. Yes, like Magnolia, that's what I thought grass trumpeting was. I learned how to blow on a grass reed to make the loud noise, from my mother when I was a little kid in The Netherlands. I've heard about conkers, but always thought they were the large marbles, so just learned something new today!

  5. The comments on your last post really made me laugh... some very creative guesses :) My favorite one was "sliding around on the floor" because for some reason that's what I thought, too.

  6. Oh, I'm still tempted to make the loud noise when I find a nice blade of grass....still have too much "kid" in me!

  7. 'Conkers' are very popular here in the UK - you need the chestnuts from the Horse Chestnut tree (ie not the sweet edible chestnuts) and you drill a hole through them. Next you push a piece of string through the hole and knot it so that it won't come off. The string should be about a foot long. Two children take turns trying to hit the other's 'conker'. The first person holds the conker still by its string while the other tries to hit it, then they change position after each turn. The winner is the one who breaks the other's conker. It's hard to explain how the hitter holds their conker to take aim though.

  8. Conkers is a new one to me, but the grass trumpet I know about. You need one of those big, thick pieces of grass. You have to hold your thumbs just so and make a slit in the grass. Try though I did, I never was able to do it. I never could whistle with my thumb and middle finger in my mouth either that so many are able to do. Maybe that's why I talk loudly, I could never whistle. ha ha

  9. Laughing at my sliding on the floor?? LOL...I said that because that is what my brother and I would do after my mom would wax the floor. We would make wax paper booties or put empty wax paper cereal bags on our feet and slide slide slide....If I did that now, I'd most likely fall and break bones..
