Wednesday Hodgepodge

From this Side of the Pond

1. April is National Jazz Appreciation Month. Are you a fan? If so what's a favorite you'd recommend to someone new to jazz listening?

I haven't listened to enough jazz to make any recommendations.

2. Mandolin, ukulele, harp, accordion or banjo...which would you be most interested in learning to play? Or do you already play one of the instruments listed?

I don't play any musical instruments. I would love to be able to pick up any musical instrument and play it well, but I don't have the time or the patience to actually learn how to play something. The harp or accordion are my favorites of the ones listed.

3. Do you judge a book by it's cover? Elaborate. You may answer in either/both the literal or figurative sense of the word.

Actual books. That depends. If it's by an author I have read and liked in the past, cover design doesn't matter to me. If it's by someone new, the cover is the first thing that grabs my attention and has a big part in deciding whether or not I'll pull it off the shelf to find out a little more about it.

4. According to a recent studythe ten  most nutritious foods are-almonds, cherimoya (supposed to taste like a cross between a pineapple/banana), ocean perch, flatfish (such as flounder and halibut), chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, swiss chard, pork fat (shocking! but I don't think they mean bacon), beet greens, and red snapper. Are any of these foods a regular part of your diet? Any you've never ever tasted? Which would you be most inclined to add to your diet?

None of these are a regular part of our diet. We do eat halibut and flounder occasionally. Almonds, once in a while.

I've never tasted beet greens, swiss chard, cherimoya, or chia seeds.

Somehow I don't feel particularly inclined to add any of these options to our diet.

5. Besides a major holiday what is the most recent thing you've celebrated with your people? Tell us how.

A birthday would have to be the most recent thing celebrated.
How? The usual ...  food, games, visiting, laughter.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I'll need to get a new colander the next time I go shopping. This happened yesterday.

I thought a Pioneer Woman one would make a nice replacement, but now I'm hearing they chip easily. That makes me sad, because they're so pretty!

  1. Yup, you definitely need a new colander. Happy shopping!

  2. I just got a new Tupperware Colander and I love it. I need to bookmark your blog. It looks pretty interesting! Have a great day!!!

  3. I played a harp when I was in my teens and twenties. If you can play the piano, you can play a harp. You're not missing much by not eating beet greens; they are loaded with iron, but they have a very strong taste.

  4. Yes, you either need a new colander or you will only be able to strain really big things! I always wanted to play piano, but it would be fun to play something like the mandolin or banjo. The harp is beautiful, but I don't see myself playing that. And you can't really carry it around.

  5. I'm with you on the books and their covers. I do the very same thing.

    Have a fabulous day. ♥

  6. I played the clarinet when I was in school but nothing since then. I just don't have the patience to put in the practice time. Have fun shopping!

  7. I definitely can be inspired or uninspired by a books cover.

  8. Uh-oh for sure! Looks like it got too close to the burner maybe? I do think the Pioneer Woman kitchen itemsare so pretty. My colander is an old enamel blue speckled one from a yard sale :)

  9. Yes, that colander needs to be replaced. I have a Tupperware one that has been with me for some time!

  10. Too bad about the colander. I hope you find a nice new one.

  11. Not a fan of jazz either. Poor colander, I just hate it when something like that happens!

  12. 1. I'm not really a fan of Jazz. It's too disjointed for my taste.

    2. Out of the instruments listed, I'd choose a mandolin to learn how to play. It reminds of the music on Rod Stewart's Every Picture Tells a Story album (Am I really that old?)

    3. NEVER judge a book or anything else by its cover unless you want to live in a constant state of being wrong. And who likes being wrong constantly?

    4. I come close on a few...flax seeds in my smoothies (have been wanting to use Chia seeds as well) and salmon I eat often.

    5. My mother's 90th birthday. She's healthier than all of us and will most like live another 90 years! :)

    6. The colander mishap is what I do to plastic cooking utensils. No matter where I place them in the dishwasher they always end up on the heating element. You'd think I'd just wash them by hand. Isn't the definition of insanity doing the same things repeatedly and expecting a different outcome?

This was my first visit to your blog...I'll be back!

  13. Chia seeds are kind of neat to work with. Our son has had to be on special diets and I once used chia to make him a porridge, since he couldn't have starch at that time. It will make puddings, thicken things, and has no flavor. I cannot use much chia at one time or it upsets my stomach, and have heard others complain about this. It is one of those things that is best to start with small portions. Chia seeds are one seed that contains a good amount of omega 3 fatty acids which help to balance the omega 6 heavy diet most Americans eat. But your family eats home cooked foods, so you are all likely getting a lot of nutrients. When people are sick, though, or their children (or other loved ones) are and doctors can't figure out how to help, experimenting with diet and nutrition can be so helpful.

  14. Pity about the colander..mine had seen better days,so I bought a stainless steel one in a charity shop (thrift store?) and was given a smaller enamel one...they both work well...and wont melt!

  15. I enjoyed reading your answers to these questions. I know how to play piano a little, but I haven't played for a long time.
