H ~ Helping

The Amish seem to be known for how much they help each other. It's true they do help each other when there is a need, but it isn't every day, or every week. In fact, months can pass without the community coming together to help someone.

Gardening, canning, quilting, and almost everything is done alone with only the members of that particular household.

Hired help on the other hand is a lot more common. After a baby is born a girl will usually be hired for the next six weeks to take care of all the household duties and any other children in the family while the mother gets to relax and enjoy her new baby.

Farmers that don't have any children old enough to help with hay making and some other tasks around the farm will often hire young boys to help out.

  1. Hiring someone for six weeks to help with a new baby is something I think every Mom would love to do. It's so good to know that were help needed the community would be there for you. I like to think that our church also does this but I fear those days are slowly fading away with the new generations being so busy with their own lives.

  2. I love the idea of hiring someone to help out for weeks after a baby is born. Grandmothers (the new mom's mother) are often the ones who show up but these days Grandma might have a full-time job or run a business. My daughter had her first baby last July and I went to stay for a few days to help her after a difficult birth, but then to get home to run my business. Clients can be understanding, but only for so long.

  3. I have met and known many Amish people and they are some of the best I've known. And they make the best homemade food!

  4. I did not want anyone to help me after I had my babies even though I had C-sections. My husband loved to help as much as he was able and that was really all the help I needed. We wanted a lot of privacy at that time, in fact. I am just one of those people who is not comfortable with people, even loved ones, doing my work. I have been challenged on this by a few friends who are members of a plain church. It is important to learn to receive as well as give, but it is not easy for me. I find it very humbling.
