Monday Morning

I love how refreshed I feel on Monday mornings and ready to tackle another week.  There is something about having an entire day of rest and worship that does more for me as an energy boost and renewed focus and enthusiasm for life than anything else I know.

Yesterday was not quite as relaxing as a regular Sunday usually is when we discovered that true to the nature of old farm houses in fall our house somehow failed to keep out a little field mouse which in turned gleefully scampered across the kitchen floor and disappeared under the stove. The rest of the day I could almost feel the little creature run up my leg which is a very unsettling and not at all relaxing way to be feeling.

We have not caught it yet so I'm hoping it went back outside.

On a brighter fallsy note. It is that time of year when pumpkins are in season and many delicious pumpkin related recipes are being trotted out.

We love pumpkin desserts and have been enjoying Rosebud's version of Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies. Another batch will be made today so hopefully I'll remember to take a picture of the finished product and share the recipe later this week.

We have started something a little different recently. We have memorized verses as a family for a while already but since we all enjoy poetry we decided to try memorizing a poem every week. I like finding fun catchy ones for the children that are amusing, touching, or something that holds their attention more than simply lines that rhyme.  For example a poem about a hornets nest and a little boy who decided to get rid of it with less than desirable results. And another one where a little girl couldn't remember the answer to 6x9 and called her doll 54 until she thought she would never forget it until the day in school when she gave her dolls real name when the teacher asked her what 6x9 was.

Next week we will be learning "When the Frost is on the Punkin" by James Whitcomb and then I'll have to do more searching for some more that we like.

  1. We had a kitchen mouse recently, too. I'd be really surprised if your mouse went back outside on its own. Ours didn't till we showed it the door, the hard way. RIP lil mousey.
    Have a great day!

  3. What a wonderful idea! :)

We've enjoyed pumpkin recipes all through the year. We buy 4 big pumpkins and bake them, puree them, and pack them in freezer baggies in 2 cup increments. What a wonderful blessing all year long!

My youngest son has been lovingly dubbed our "mouse catcher extrordinaire". He's the keeper of the traps. Although, sadly, they have found a place to go where the traps are not~~the toilet paper storage. They've proceeded to shred quite a few of the outside of the rolls to make nesting material, I'm sure. But, since mice carry ickies, all of those rolls of toilet paper are now unusable. :( The little things are certainly not welcome here!

...and then there are the occational flying squirrels...

I love living in the country! :)

  4. I love your ideas...they help me. (memorizing poems)
Here is a fitting poem you might enjoy reading.

"Come," said the Wind to the Leaves one day.
"Come over the meadow and we will play.
Put on your dresses of red and gold.
For summer is gone and the days grow cold."

  5. That poem about the little girl who couldn't remember 6x9 came to mind as I started reading your post. My mother-in-law (now 91) learned that when she took elocution lessons as a young girl, and our daughter learned it for a poetry recital for our homeschool group. Very cute!

  6. Ooh, I know the 6 x 9 poem, too! It was in a book we had when I was a child. I loved it. I never named my doll 54, though...lol :) Good memories.

  7. MaryAnn...I'm not a mouse person either! As for poems, I do love those! Poems by Dr Seuss and Shel Silverstein were some of my kids favorites, and I chose ones that had a 'good' moral in them, put forth in a fun way. Have you used any of those yet? My very favorite poet is Robert Frost.

  8. MaryAnn....my grandfather loved poem and he would recite them to us grandkids. What a delight and lots of giggles. To this day...I say...."Under the spreading chestnut tree the village smithy stands" and so on. Poems are great.

  9. I too enjoy poetry and enjoy reading your blog. Your children will always remember this tradition and also many of the poems they are taught.
Here is a short quip to ponder:

Life is like a hot bath...
The longer you stay in it,
    The more wrinkled you get!

    Have a great day!!!

  10. Your children will always remember the tradition you've established and the time you spend with them. They are lucky kids. This is my first visit to your blog, but I'll be back. You've created a great spot for your readers to visit and I really enjoyed the time I spent here. I hope you have a great day. Blessings...Mary

  11. When the Frost is on the Pumpkin is a poem I have dearly remembered from my own childhood! I'm so delighted you're memorizing it with your children - and it ggave me the idea to do it with mine too!

Every fall, when the first frost arrives I have to dance around the house reciting it once or twice (or until my family gets tired of it).

    Love it!

  12. Our Sundays tend to be not what I think God meant when He declared it a 'day of rest'. In fact I often mutter as I go to the car on Sun. mornin'..."day of rest, day of rest, day of rest."

By the time I teach the Pre~teen Sunday School class, sing worship, lead Kid's Church I'm exhausted. This Sunday we went out to lunch with the Pastors, hit a granddaughters birthday party, came home to freshen up the back to church for prayer and share...not a day of rest. Heeehehehe! Sorry...seems I dumped on you.

I adore children's poetry, have a blast with it sweetie!!!

Have yourself a terrifically blessed Tuesday sweetie!!! :o)

  13. Love poetry :-) My mom used to teach us poems she learned as a girl in her one room schoolhouse in Rocktown, NJ... back in 1913 and a few years later.

Here is one she used to recite to us kids when were little: http://www.angelfire.com/nc2/musings/AutumnPoems.html

We only knew the first verse and I was pleasantly surprised to have my neice send me the whole thing!

  14. Thank you very much for the comment you left on my blog! I hope you find the mouse...that would be kinda' unnerving to have the little critter running around somewhere. Those pumpkin recipes sound delicious. Have you ever tried pumpkin chip cheesecake..It's a family favorite.
