Our Weekend

My brother Mahlon was working a few hours south of us and rather than staying in a motel room over the weekend he decided to come visit us.

The children went to bed on Friday evening excited at the prospect of having their uncle here for two whole days. When I got up at four on Saturday I discovered Sunbeam in the livingroom, sleeping on the recliner. She had wanted to make sure to be awake when Mahlon comes.

When he arrived in time for breakfast the children didn't give him much time before they convinced him to help them play a game of pick-up sticks.

The weekend passed much too quickly.  We all had a great time! On Sunday afternoon our Construction game was dug out of the cupboard and Mahlon and LV played a long game, just like the olden days when my brothers used to come see us on Sunday afternoons. I detest playing Construction almost as much as I dislike Chess so I'm always happy when my brothers come and LV can get to play those games with someone who enjoys them as much as he does.

Now if someone would drop by that enjoyed Scrabble or Probe I'd be all set.

And I love Scrabble - if only we lived closer! :)

  2. I haven't seen pick up sticks in ages. Used to play with them when I was a kid.
Glad you all had a nice visit with your brother.

  3. What fun! I'd love to come play Scrabble with you! I've not heard of Construction or Probe. We've become hooked lately on Mexican Train Dominoes.

  7. I hate scrabble but my all time most detested game is Monopoly. It just takes FOREVER... YUCK!

  8. Scrabble over Chess any day! There are cheap sets of Pick up Sticks here in South Africa (made in China of course!)

  10. Now Scrabble, that's a good game. Pictionary is a good game, too. My husband always wants to play chess or Monopoly (bo-ring!).

  11. I have never heard of Construction but it sounds {boring} lol. I like scrabble or pictionary or Uno about the best. Can you tell me if there is a meaning to the name Mahlon? Several Ancestors on my mother's side had the name Mahlon and they were all German/Quakers.

  12. Anyone who enjoys Monopoly would probably enjoy Construction though it is different.

Becky, the name Mahlon comes from the Bible in the book of Ruth. It means powerful.

  13. What a sweet picture of Sunbeam. SHe must love her uncle a great deal. A beautiful compliment to him.
I used to love Scrabble but haven't played for years. If I lived close to you we could get together for tea and a game.
    Hugs.

  14. If you would've said "Take a Letter" or "Take One" (playing with the Scrabble Tiles) - I would've been there. Have you ever heard of that. I suppose it's a made-up Mennonite version of Scrabble.

    I haven't played that in Forever. :)

  15. I adore Scrabble; the Lord ofthe Manor and I play it a lot in the evenings. Monopoly? I'd rather go to the GYN! I also enjoy UNO; that's a good game for families, because kids stand just as great a chance of winning as the adults. Never heard of Probe, but another game that's fun for families is Apples to Apples.

  17. Scrabble all the way! It's my favorite game. I, too, despise everlasting "Monotony" a.k.a. Monopoly. *chuckles*

  19. Yes, I'm a fan of Scrabble too. My husband is a dreadful speller, and doesn't care much for board games at all...so, sadly, this word person doesn't get to play that game much. Where are all of you Scrabble lovers when I need you?
    :-)

I have also never heard of Probe or Construction (and don't care much for Monopoly either.)

  21. I love all the old stand-bys like Scrabble or Uno, and I like games of any kind really (except Monopoly - I thought it was great when I was little but now - UGHHH). Sunbeam looks adorable waiting for her uncle ~ SO CUTE!!

  23. I was just looking at some of your old posts and wanted to share this with you. My 2 year old son broke his leg several months ago and was in a body cast for about 9 weeks. Thank you for sharing your daughter's experience with a broken leg. Though we were spared the surgery aspect, we understand how slow the healing process can be and how hard it is to see a child that could walk and run, slowly sort of relearn it all once healed.

My husband loves Scrabble and no other board game :-)

  24. There's on-line Scrabble, though I've never played it. Although I personally don't like Chess, I know it's a fantastic game. It is good to impart valuable skills--there are phenomenal strides being made in poor communities (as well as middle-class & affluent) by tireless people training youth week in & week out in learning to play Chess. I'm sure many of you have heard or seen of the movie about this....showing how the 'hip hop' culture can be empowered for good through Chess.

  25. I'm glad you got to see your brother, and that LV and the kids especially enjoyed his visit! :)

I like to play Scrabble, but most of my family don't. I tell you what... If I ever find myself coming anywhere near where you live, I'll have a game of Scrabble (or maybe a few games) with LV for you! :)

  26. Wow, I didn't realize so many enjoy Scrabble...I do too! But my hubby thinks it is too time-consuming so together we enjoy Boggle! After 3 minutes we are seeing who won! You need to try it!!!
    Love reading your posts.~~marilyn

  28. You and me both! I LOVE SCRABBLE! You won't believe this, but I can play it any time I want, I have that app on my phone and it's the most used when I have to wait for someone at an appointment, in the car after school while I wait for my son to come out...and now I have my adult daughter hooked on it, too. Playing it on my phone I think has made me a better player!
I loved seeing your pics of family time, Mary Ann!
    xoxo
