Fairs, Funerals, and Life In-between

It would have been a challenge to pack anything more into this past week.
The long awaited, and much anticipated fair week rolled around. We had plans to go on Monday evening as soon as LV came home from work, but half way through the day he called, telling us to go ahead without him, that he has to go to an emergency thing in Pittsburgh.
We were all disappointed, but went ahead determined we'd have a great time.
Steven grew a lot since last year, which meant a whole new assortment of rides were available to him.  I wandered the midway with him, standing in line, then watching him ride, before hurrying off to the next ride to repeat the process.
While waiting next to the little roller coaster I felt my purse shiver oddly. I opened it to see my phone vibrating away. The caller ID showed it was one of my brothers, so I answered. "Uncle Eli passed away," he informed me, and he'd call back later once he knew what the arrangements were.
That put a damper on my standing and watching Steven ride, but we stayed until LV called to say what time he'd be home.

We got a whole mess of sweetcorn from the nearby Hutterite colony. It was quite the chore getting it all ready for the freezer, but what a good feeling once it was done, to know I have food put up for winter.

On Friday afternoon the funeral for Uncle Eli was held. I was thinking family would probably stop in to see us in the morning, so we whipped up some fun treats, and did a quick visitor ready sweep of the house, but it was all in vain. No one ventured by.
I didn't attend the funeral. I could have, but another emergency popped up when an accident occurred that kept LV on the scene for eight hours. We have an agreement that I won't have to venture to Amish things alone. (Somehow they are much less harsh when he is by my side.) And so I stayed at home.

  1. It is NOT just in Amish families where people are kinder if the man is there with the woman. You are following my rule. May God bring comfort to your heart in all of this. (heart!)

  2. Busy life indeed. It is so unfortunate that there are still people who think they can say almost anything to a woman, but would never do the same around a man.

  4. I am so sorry about your uncle. I am also so sorry they can be harsh to you ; they should still be showing love and kindness.

  5. Sorry to hear about your uncle's passing.
I agree that it is best to have your husband along. I just had an incident where a family member made comments to me that he would not have said if my husband would have been there. The comments were very accusing and hurtful and though I have since been in the presence of that person with my husband no further comments have been made.

  6. I'm glad you got to have a good time at the fair but sorry that bad news came while you were there.
I'm also sorry that no visitors came after you made everything ready. It's too bad that family is that way. Unfortunately it's not only the Amish that have these kinds of issues and it always hurts.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  7. The fair sounds wonderful and reminds me of a year when we were in Canada and went to a Fall Fair. I had never been to anything like it!
Yes, families can hurt bitterly, but as long as your own family is close that's all that really matters.

  8. I have been following your blog for a while. I have been so interested in the Amish belief. I know I could never abide by their rules but it is such an easier religion to me. I am so sorry for your loss. It upset me to read no one came by to your home. Know that God understands and will always be by your side.

  9. You certainly did have a busy week. I'm very sorry about the loss of your uncle. I am not a fair lover. I like the displays and the food but I really dislike the rides and midway.

  10. I'm glad you had fun at the fair, but sorry about your Uncle's passing. I'm even more sorry you had to miss your Uncle Eli's funeral because hurtful comments mean you couldn't go without LV by your side.

  11. I was going to say just about the same thing that Victoria Zigler said.
You were probably wise to stay home but it must have hurt.
I am sorry for your loss of your Uncle though.
    (((hugs)))

  12. Sad you couldn't attend the funeral but I'm sure he and the family were in your prayers. Families can be cruel sometimes without realising it but you know that you made your home welcoming if they had chosen to visit. At least you have some happy memories of the fair and wonderful corn in your freezer. I hope that next week will be a nicer one for you. God bless Diane x

  13. I am so sorry for both your loss of a beloved uncle and for the disappointment in the lack of a visit. The loss is not only yours, but theirs. I am praying for the grace and peace that only God can give.
