Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Can you believe it's the end of January? What was the best day of January 2017 for you, and why?

I shouldn't be surprised by how fast time slips by, but somehow the end of the month always sneaks up on me before I'm ready.

January was a good month of mostly ordinary happy days. I became an aunt to a sweet baby boy. He is grandchild #15 for my parents, and grandson #10.

2. What sounds make up the background noise in your life?

At this time of year, there is always the background noise of the furnace in the basement.

I am looking forward to when we can exchange that noise to the prettier sound of birds singing in the trees here around the house, the waterfall, spring peepers, and all the lovely sounds of nature I enjoy so much.

3. I read on the Power of Positivity website a list of ten things to drop from your life right now. They are-
anger outbursts, people who put you down, regret, negative self talk, being a people pleaser, the notion you need to be perfect, the past (but keep the lessons learned!), gossip and judgment, comparing yourself to others, and the word hate (focus on what you love instead)
Which thing on the list do you most need to drop? Are you trying or will you try?

I'm a recovering people pleaser ... still working on it, but I'm getting better. Otherwise most of the things on the list don't apply, except for the occasional negative self talk, and yes, that is something I want to work on.

4. What is sacred to you?

My faith.

I don't like "Christian" comics and memes where they make jokes about things in the Bible, or heaven and the end of life. I don't find them funny, at all.

5. January is National Oatmeal month. Are you a fan, and if so how do you like it?

No, I am not a fan. Of all the foods I can think of, there is none worse than oatmeal. Makes my stomach churn just thinking about having to eat it.

Maybe I should clarify. Oatmeal as in breakfast cereal ... all hot and goopy. Can't eat it. I've tried because I know it's healthy, but my stomach doesn't want any part of it. The older I get the stronger my aversion to oatmeal becomes.

Oatmeal baked in cookies and other desserts is a different story and I can enjoy it then.

6. What feelings does twilight stir up in you?

I'm not outside very often when twilight arrives, so most days I don't notice it.
.
7. Something you're looking forward to next month?

More ordinary days. They're my favorite. I'm also looking forward to Valentine's Day. The girls are busy making plans for it. Their enthusiasm is contagious.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

My poor computer keyboard is showing its age. Its letters are getting worn off from being used so much. Some are completely missing, while others still have a wee bit left. I guess it's a good thing we're past the stage of search and poke when writing.

  1. We were at 72 degrees here yesterday, so the birds are singing : ) I'm not complaining. We had a little taste of winter and that was enough for me. I love the beauty of a snowfall, but the older I get the less I like the cold. Have a beautiful ordinary day!

    1. I do like winter, a lot. But the sounds that come from having the windows open during the warmer months ... well, I love them.

  2. Winter has been very mild to us this year. I am not a fan of oatmeal except in desserts!

  3. I'm looking forward to having the windows open and hearing the birds in the trees. Goopy, that's a good word for oatmeal. Congratulations, Auntie!

    1. Goopy is the word I decided to go with, though Sharon has a much more interesting description.

  4. Boy, won't it be great to have the sound of the furnace replaced by song birds!! Can't wait.

  5. I'm a recovering people pleaser, too...something I work on every day, but guilt often stand in the way. Congrats on your new little nephew!

    1. Being a people pleaser is hard work ... being a recovering people pleaser is a challenge as well. :)

  6. I am a recovering people please, too, but I don't like to admit it!!! I absolutely and totally hear you on number 4! We can understand that those who don't know the Lord find it easy to make jokes, but Christians even today, don't seem to grasp the holiness of God and that it is nothing to joke about.
Goopy is why I never liked oatmeal and I gagged at it. However, the way I fix it these days, it is not that way. That's why I can't handle oatmeal made by anyone other than me. Lol. Congratulations on the nephew. Any day a baby comes into our world is a good day.

    1. Hmmm ... maybe I have to go hunting for oatmeal recipes I can actually eat.

  7. I must be weird, indeed! Not only do I like fruitcake, but oatmeal is my breakfast of choice. It sticks with me all day and I don't want snacks as often. I only eat the five minute kind - no quick cooking, and get that instant stuff outta here!

I do try to be less judgmental, but it isn't easy. One day The Squire was to meet a fellow at church to discuss the alarm system or something. The man called here about fifteen minutes after the appointment and said he couldn't find the church. We are on an eight block, dead end street. When I pointed this out to him, he said, "Oh. Is that the church? I passed it a couple of times."

Steeple, graveyard, big sign. Yep, that's the church. Now, try not to be judgmental then!

    1. LOL!! Okay, that would be hard not being a little judgmental. :)

  8. Loved reading your answers. I am with you completely on #4. There are a lot of things I don't find very funny, and this is definitely one of them.

And hearing birds singing rather than the roar of the wood furnace's blowers -- sounds good to me, but I must admit I'm enjoying the heat from said furnace. Snowing lightly here as I write.

    1. The noise from the furnace doesn't bother me, and I certainly appreciate the heat it provides, but I am looking forward to prettier sounds.

  9. Background noise here? The boy playing his games, the furnace occasionally running, the cat tearing around all crazy, and my large wind chimes singing on the porch outside our living room window. Happy February!

    1. I love the sound of wind chimes. I usually bring mine indoors during winter.

  10. I love oatmeal. Hubby and I have it for breakfast most mornings and if I make something else he always asks where the oatmeal is! He likes it more than I do.

I don't like it when people make fun of my faith either. God is a loving God, but he also did demands and deserves respect.

I'm so ready for spring this year. It's snowing again here today as I look out the window and we have about three foot of snow in our yard already. I actually slipped on the ice while shoveling two weeks ago and fractured my back. My hope is by the time I'm able to get up and walk around again, spring will have arrived! Meanwhile I have lots of knitting and reading time.
    Blessings, Betsy

  11. I like oatmeal, but I'm trying to eat low carb right now so I'm not getting to eat it.

I hope you have a great February.
