Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? The NFL is back in action along with all the college teams. Are you a fan? Who do you root for? If you're not a fan what do you do while the rest of America watches Saturday, Sunday, Monday night, and now Thursday night games?

I'm not a huge fan of football but I do root for the Steelers. There are so many things I enjoy a whole lot more than football. Playing with my children, reading a book, catching up on emails, and I of-course can't forget Pinterest.

LV loves football so sometimes when I help him watch for a few minutes I enjoy asking intelligent questions such as, "How can they keep the grass on the fields so nice?"  "Why do they call it football? Is it because the ball is secretly stuffed with feet?"  "Why do they keep slapping each other like that when they're happy with a play?"  "How do the refs decide when to give a penalty for excessive celebration after a touchdown?"

Okay the last question really does bug me.  Some teams get away with a lot more than others.

I think my favorite thing about football is this little bit that I like to watch every fall when football season starts.

2. What's something I'll always find in your closet?

Other than clothes I keep a box filled with the letters LV and I exchanged before we were married.

3. Share one of your earliest memories.

I think I shared some of my earliest memories already but in case you missed it.  I remember sitting on Mom's lap at a dinner table when I was only a baby when we were visiting one of her friends. A fawn came and ate a noodle from her plate and I was absolutely terrified.

4. What circus act best describes your week so far?

I'm not really sure. Some type of a balancing act I suppose. So far this week we have all been sick and today is the first day I'm feeling a little better.

5. What's a food you disliked as a child but you love now?

Olives. I used to think they are one of the most awful things anyone could try eating and now I really like them.

6. Describe your summer in three words.

Sorrow, busy, warm.

7. Where were you on September 11, 2001? Will you do anything special to mark the day this year?

I was on my way to the hospital with pregnancy related complications when we saw the smoke from Flight 93 crashing.

We didn't do anything special to mark the day other than remember and pray. On a brighter note I became the aunt to a sweet little nephew yesterday. I won't have any problems remembering his birthday and there will now be something much nicer for us to think of when we hear that date.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Of all the gladiolus I had planted only a few have bloomed and they have all been in the orange family of colors. The way the leaves look I think there was some kind of bug bothering them.

Hopefully next year I'll have better luck growing them, both in keeping them alive and healthy and hopefully colors other than orange.

  1. Oh, I hear you on football. However, there was a time when we watched football games. We even attended a game sitting in the nosebleed section of the stadium at the University of Tennessee. It rained the entire game. We left, and never went again. Life is good. :)
    Have a great day!

  2. That looks like caterpillar damage on your gladioli. Next year perhaps dust them or spray them with BT, a non-toxic biological control?

  3. I have all of my letters from Chris, too, but keep them under our bed in a special box. That bloom is such a pretty color!

  4. What fun....as a younster I did not like celery and now do.
I was on my way to work on 911 at DFW airport. Sad memory.
I do not have letter from my husband. Now that he has left his earth, I sure wish I did. However, I kept every special occation card he gave me. Now I get one out on each occation. Makes me feel good.
    The flower is beautiful!

  5. I agree with you about olives. I don't think it was a food found on our table growing up. But, it sure seems to be more of an adult thing liking (perhaps in a martini! ha)

  6. So fun to have a new nephew in the family! My daughter's birthday is the 10th so we too have joy mixed with the sadness of 9/11.

  7. I love the clip from Andy Griffith - that's football in a nutshell for me!

Oranges - I couldn't abide eating an orange until I was 21. The membranes would make me gag. Now I like them fine. go figure.

On 9/11/2001 my brother-in-law in Australia called to tell me what was going on, I had no idea. I turned on the TV in time to see the 2nd tower go down. We could see the smoke from certain spots, and it was months before I could go in those places without tearing up.

  8. Thanks for sharing these - I love reading these little tidbits on Wednesdays. I joined in once and of course probably haven't blogged in 100 years since, but I like reading them!

  9. We don't do sports in our house--we are into the arts, so like to spend time reading, watching great movies, writing, and eating ice cream. Oh, yes, it is too an art!

My earliest memory was spilling milk from my high chair, and Daddy hollering at me. I must have been one or two. That yelling stuck in my mind.

  10. I, too, like your Wednesday hodge podge writngs. Like ImP, I thought of doing it, too ... at least she's done it once!

Football? We don't really watch it but follow it a bit ... routing for the Buffalo Bills.

Let's see, food... lettuce was a big NO as a kid and even as a teenager. Changed my mind at about age 22 when we went on our honeymoon and saw that 'sophisticated' people ate salad .. LOL!!! No, really... the lettuce used to feel like it squeaked in my teeth and that really bothered me. Getting used to it was a slow process ...with lots of dressing. I like it, now but it doesn't always like me :-( So much for dieting...

9-11 ... Never to be forgotten. My husband had to report to Ground Zero immediately to help. Happily we have a friend whose baby's birthday is that day, too!

Still praying for Emma and her children.
