Lil' Buddy's Arrival

If you are comfortable with the idea, please tell us more about the time leading up to your baby's birth; I am wondering how it all went and if you had him at home.
Carolyn

After a long difficult pregnancy the baby welcoming day finally arrived. It was much like any other day where I was starting to wonder if I'm going to be pregnant for the rest of my life.

I followed my usual schedule for the day and planned to try a new recipe for supper. I was reading all the instructions for the second time and I noticed that it would need to bake for at least an hour. Something seemed to tell me that wasn't a great idea and I reluctantly put the cookbook away and opted to make an quick and easy stir fry instead.

Right after we were done eating I got up from the table and my water broke. Immediately I had the urge to push. I told LV we need to go right away. We called our friends to meet us on our way to get the children and I concentrated with everything I had to not have the baby born before we got to the birthing center. I refrained from telling LV that it wouldn't be long since I did not want to risk being stopped for speeding.

We got there in time and minutes later Buddy made his arrival weighing in at a healthy 9 lb 2 oz.  Up until then I had no idea that a birth could possibly be so short, easy, and only very uncomfortable instead of excruciatingly painful.

  1. I also know what "short" labor is. My 3rd child was here within 1 1/2 hours of my water breaking. Labor started on the way to the hospital. We had a 40 min. trip to the hospital and I told hubby to stop on the side of the road because I really needed to have the baby (he wouldn't). I then tried to tell him to stop at a different hospital which was closer (he wouldn't). Then at the hospital we kicked the doctors off the Dr's only elevator, went to the 2nd floor, demanded a room (thankfully I had called before leaving home), went it and had a baby. No meds, no IV, and no nothing. All three children were quick labor and deliveries with no paid meds, no spinals, no nothing.

  3. Everything about that sweet boy has been a surprise ~ sounds like the birth just followed right along. So happy you didn't have him in the car - although that would've been a really good story (for us, not you)! LOL

  5. Wow! What a quick blessing. It makes me wonder how quick the next one would be for you. It might have to be birthed in the driveway! LOL!

  6. I know about those quick births - they can be quite exciting! My first labor was 4 hours, and my second only 2.

I'm glad you got to the birthing center in time.

  8. Little Buddy was not such a little newborn, was he? Glad he was an easy birth for you, though! I don't believe the number of children can predict speed of delivery. My 2nd was born 2 hours after leaving home for the hospital. My
3rd and largest, was born less than an hour after arriving at the hospital, with no contractions felt or pain until the very end. #4 was a quickie too, about 3hours, and #5 was the smallest at 6lbs 2oz, and the most difficult and painful, presenting herself with her face up.

  9. My mother-in-law says she didn't ever go into labor per se...just had a heightened sense of awareness of colors/sounds etc and about 20m to get to the hospital in all 3 cases. Sounds kinda like she's an airy-fairy person but she's not. Very practical lady---just blessed.

  11. A couple at our church didn't even make it to the hospital, which is about seven miles from their house. He delivered their daughter on a gas station parking lot!

  13. Thanks for sharing your story. Our first was a hospital birth, the next was a birth center, then we planned 2 at home, and our last was trying to have a planned home birth, but ended up being a birth center birth. You can read about the last birth here http://family6-time.blogspot.com/search/label/Birth%20Story

  16. Oh, my. Short labor? That's all I know. Never had my water break before arriving at the hospital, though. First one, I went to the doctor for a regular appointment. He said I was dilated and sent me across the street to the hospital. I had aches in my thighs and back. The hospital was full back in April, 1962, and they put me in a delivery room with a nurse for company. She patted my hand and said she would be right back. She wasn't quick enough and I was yelling for "Help!! My baby's here!" in a couple of moments. It was a Catholic hospital and in seconds I had a nun and two nurses. We were all just fine. Second was similar, though I thought I had indigestion instead of labor pains. Again, the doctor didn't get there, but nurses were. By my third, my doctor (the same one), was there and told the nurses, "Watch her. She has her babies funny." Oh, yes - short labor!

  18. I had a long bed-ridden pregnancy that went two weeks over due-date, induced labor for two days before she decided it was time to come...in the middle of an awful thunderstorm, hospital loss power and she born under generator power. But once my water broke she came in a flash and so easy. Daddy said he often heard his mother say a difficult pregnancy means a very easy delivery.

  19. Mine later ones haven't been that short. My 2ne, 3rd, 4th, and 5th were less than two hours, but the first 3 of those were induced.
My water usually doesn't break until the very end though. Then once that happens it's over quick! With my last one my water didn't break until I pushed for the first time.
I have a friend that had her fourth in the car on the way to the hospital. Her husband didn't stop as they were on the interstate, so she delivered him herself.
Our first homebirth (5th baby) I had mine in less than two hours. The midwife didn't make it and my husband caught the baby. After that, my midwife insisted I call a lot sooner than with that one. :) And she's made it to the next 6.
