With a new resolve to find those words we started reading our Bible. Not knowing whether they would be found in the New or Old Testament we decided to read several chapters of each every day.
We recalled a verse that we had memorized while going to school Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it will be opened unto you.
We claimed that verse as our own and practically hung all our hope on it. We were doing plenty of asking and seeking. The only difference was this time all our asking and seeking was directed to God instead of people since we had no idea who to talk to about what we were experiencing. It seemed different to try talking to Him on our own. Almost a little scary.
We plowed our way through Genesis and Exodus with out finding what we were looking for. Somehow we spent more time reading the four gospels. They seemed a lot easier to read and we found them quite interesting. As we entered Acts and Romans we got bogged down. Nothing made sense at all, we didn't mean to be disrespectful but to us everything that came after the four gospels seemed like a lot of gibberish. Our reading slowed down. We still read, still wanted to know, but the urgent desperation had subsided for now.

You probably didn't have a study Bible or even a New Revised Standard Version to make the language easier. It is helpful to know the context of the times in which different parts of the Bible were written. Paul, especially, was writing to diffent audiences in his letters, and knowing the problems faced by new Christians at the time help to better understand what he is saying.
ReplyDeleteThat must have been so hard for you.
ReplyDeleteAs Carolyn says, it is good to know the background of Paul's letters. I studied them for A level exams at school, and found Paul's journeys fascinating.
It is odd how God gets hold of us by our desire to seek answers, this is how I started to into the Word of God looking for answers, searching, seeking and reading. It was not long before God had placed a love for His Word in my heart and what was cloudy begin to become clearer. It is so good to hear how God was working in your lives.
ReplyDeleteMrs. J.
Your speaking of seeking God instead of man for the answers is so right! I thought of this verse when I read today's offering from you. 1John 2:27.
ReplyDeleteI am SOOOOOOO enjoying traveling these paths with you! Thank you for sharing the journey!

What an exciting, scary time! I wonder how many people grow up as Christians, Amish or non-Amish, without ever having read His word?
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if your desire is to hunt through the Scriptures on your own or just to find the verses. I will tell you they are in Isaiah but not the rest, just in case you are hoping to discover it on your own. If you want the actually verses then I can post them.
ReplyDeleteHow sad it is to be so hungry Spiritually and not have anybody to help. I hope you ended up making sense of the epistles, they are our foundation for christian principles. Reading and learning of apostle Paul's journey is one that always makes me thankful for my "easy" walk with the Lord. Reading how much he despised the early Christians and that through God he became a new creature. How much love and patience he had for the new churches and believers in Christ.
ReplyDeleteI cannot imagine not growing up with scriptures an important part of the home. I have the small box that has rolled up scriptures that my sister and I would choose with a small piece of plastic designed to pull one out from the bunch. We would read it, then Mom would read the context. The context is important, though so often a single verse speaks huge truths. I believe God's words: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11 KJV)
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear what you thought of Leviticus and Numbers. :) But even more, I can't wait to hear how you found your verse.
ReplyDeleteThat must have been frustrating!
