I'm spending quite a bit of time working on getting my memories written in story form for the book series. Since I am changing every one's names to a fictitious one I have a lot of names rolling through my mind.
There is one person though that I can't seem to get a name to stick. So that is where you come in. Remember Edith? I will be introducing her a lot sooner (as a little girl) in my book than I did on my blog and I'm searching for a fitting name for her.
It needs to be a very plain name and not something anyone would go. "Aww, what a pretty name," when they hear it.
Looking forward to hearing your ideas.

Wasn't she a troublemaker? How about Maggie, Gertie, or Mouthy. *giggles*
ReplyDeleteHmmm,Bertha?
ReplyDeleteBernice?
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was Martha.
ReplyDeleteAgnes
ReplyDeleteHazel.
ReplyDeleteThelma, please.
ReplyDeleteI think Martha is a beautiful name. ;)
ReplyDeleteBut I just looked back at the previous post and there was already a Martha in that story anyway, so Edith can't turn into Martha. How about Jane? It's plain.
LOL - This is a tough one in case any of your blog readers have those names! How about Crabapple or Jezebel? Just joking. I like Magnolia Tree's idea of Gertie. It could still be a girl's name (as opposed to an older woman's) because of the -ie but it doesn't conjure up some young beauty with a sweet disposition. No one aspires to be a "Gertie". I like that name though, but it would be a good one! Martha would be a good one, too, but I think of an older woman with that one. I can see why you'd ask for help - that's a tough one!
ReplyDeleteEdna
ReplyDeleteMaud, definitely Maud. She was the mad lady in the papershop when I was a kid. She made you dig around on the floor for change. As I was a kid and close to the floor anyway it was good for me!
ReplyDeleteMy mamaw was Edna and she was a wonderful person..I just couldn't see it. O.o
ReplyDeleteEliza
ReplyDeleteJoanna
Ruth
Elyse?
ReplyDeleteI think it partly depends on what kind of nasty she was usually. If she was particularly catty and kind of sly then maybe Betsy? I like Bertha a lot though too, and if that linked episode was typical of her subtlety then I think Bertha would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteErma
ReplyDeleteEunis
Thelma
Good luck!
No offense, I think Edith is perfect. But if you want fictional, there is always Helga and my mom's favorite, Brunhilde.
ReplyDeleteSome Amish names from our area are Susan
ReplyDeleteMary Ann
Laura
Leah
Leanna
Cindy
Rhoda
Rachel
Sarah
Anna
Rebecca
Martha
Ruth
Olive?
ReplyDeleteHow about Fran ,Alma, Helen, Edna, or Wanda. These all say "plain" to me.
ReplyDeleteElsie
ReplyDeleteI like Agnes ... it's an older and unassuming name. It is not generally assiciated with storybook witches nor does one have thoughts of cute adorable little girls. Back in the day when the name was popular, younger girls were usually nicknamed Aggie.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Mrs.B
Maude
ReplyDeleteMadora
Myrtle
Mertie
Effie
Ima
Phoebe
I like Anna Grace.
ReplyDeleteHow about "Agatha"
ReplyDeleteMaud (no e). Very plain.
ReplyDeleteStella
ReplyDeleteEstelle
Vera
Velma
Elsa
Clare
I would like to suggest using the Social Security Website: http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/
ReplyDeleteWith this feature you can look up names by decades, which I would think a great resource for a writer..
~~HUGS~~
I love names.
ReplyDeleteI think you have gotten some good suggestions of Amish-sounding names. I like:
Bertha
Erma
Maude (or Maudie)
Edna
To these I would add:
Esther
Elva (or Alva)
Wilma
Elmina
Irene
Ella
Verna
Mahala
Alta
Alma
I think I like Elmina the best.
ReplyDeleteSaloma
Lois, Bren, Ruby, Helen, Ellen,
ReplyDeleteDawn, JulieAnna
I agree with Saloma about Elmina - it's uncommon enough that most people shouldn't associate it with a friend or loved one, and it sounds like this girl/woman is not one that you want your readers sympathizing with!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fascinating tool (and Elmina isn't listed at all): http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#
You can see which names were popular from the 1880s till now in an effective graphic format. Check it out - it might give you some inspiration, too!
Agnes, Clara, Martha, Enid, Louise.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of troublemakers I alwayus think of Nellie or Nancy from Little House on the prarie
ReplyDeleteWhat about Jane?
ReplyDeleteEvelyn
ReplyDeleteElizabeth
Liza
Elsie
Evelyn
ReplyDeleteElizabeth
Liza
Elsie
My paternal grandmother's name was Edith. My maternal grandmother's name was Iva. A lot of people mistakenly would call her Ivy. It would make her mad :)
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was Esther--then Rachel ?
ReplyDeleteFirst thought was Edna. Second thought was Erma. Or Agnes, caught that one as I was scrolling down to comment.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Jessica
Jane is plain
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was Gert or Gertie. Good luck and I hope you will share info about how to get the books once they are published!! So excited! I love your blog.
ReplyDeleteI think Gertie or Agnes would be appropriate. Either that or something plain that you hear a lot, like Jane.
ReplyDeleteRuth.
ReplyDeleteHow about Lena?
ReplyDeleteOh, I think I'd have to go with Edna or Saloma's suggestion of Elmina.
ReplyDeleteYou could call her Nellie, as in Nellie Olsen from Little House on the Prairie, who was also a bit nasty at times...
ReplyDeleteUmm I like Irma or Simone/a
ReplyDeleteMamie, Odema, Henrietta, Eleanor,
ReplyDeleteHope this helps
I like Elmina.
ReplyDeleteAlice
Ida
Gladys
Nellie
Agnes. That was my great g-ma's name.
ReplyDeleteI like Emily. It was the name of my favorite aunt.
ReplyDeleteHow about Gertrude, Bertha or Barbara, the last name belonged to a woman who was a polygamist and very abusive to her sister wives' and their children.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was Alma. Gertrude is also fitting, with Gertie being a good nickname. You generally don't think of a Gertie being cute.
ReplyDeleteBessie, Betsie, Bertha, Ishbell.
ReplyDeleteVelma
ReplyDeleteEloise
Treva
Becky
How about Cora?
ReplyDeleteHow about Mae? Love your blog!!
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's name is Evelyn (she's 6).
My MIL's name is Alma (she's 58).
And my Grandmother-In-Law is Bernice (she passed away a few years ago).
They're all lovely people and I find the names lovely because of them! :)
Anyway, my 'plain' name suggestion is Ethel.
My mother's suggestion is Tekla, but that's a Finnish name and doesn't really sound Amish!
Have fun finding the "right" name!
Lea
I'm a bit late -- but sure wanted to get my vote in for:
ReplyDeleteBertha
It would be so appropriate.
I like Ella
ReplyDeleteBuella. IT is one of my aunts names. For some reason my family like all the plain names. ;)
