One Saturday I was going about my normal routine and had just finished making a nice batch of bread dough, enough for six loaves, when all of a sudden we were faced with an emergency situation and had to go dashing off to the hospital.
Before we left I placed the covered bowl of bread dough into the refrigerator to try to keep it from rising as quickly. That refrigerator wasn't very cold since it was only kept cool by a big stainless steel pan filled with water and ice in the top freezer compartment.
We arrrived at the E.R. and after a long time they were finally ready to see us. By the time everything was cared for and we got back home it was late. My brothers had helpfully come over to do our chores which we were really grateful for and we headed straight to bed, worn out from the unexpected events of the day.
The next day was our inbetween Sunday. We never ate big regular meals on inbetween Sunday's unless we had visitors so I didn't open that refrigerator since we kept our milk and eggs in our chest type fridge. With cereal, egg-in-the-holes, and a lot of popcorn and desserts the day passed and I never once thought of my bread dough waiting to be baked.
On Monday morning when I walked out on the sunporch to get milk and eggs for breakfast I couldn't believe my eyes. The bread dough had risen. It rose more than I even knew was possible as it spilled over the sides of the bowl and managed to push open the refrigerator door. There was bread dough every where as it spilled down over the shelves like a river and oozed out into a big unsightly puddle on the floor.
I gathered it up and tried to stuff it back into the bowl but it would no longer fit. Some how I managed to clean it up and dumped it out on the manure spreader. I would bake more bread later but this batch I had no intentions of trying!

OMGosh!! Well, six loaves worth of bread dough would create a river of dough, I suppose. ;)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend! :)
We had a bakery for a time and sometimes the boys would forget what stage they were up to with the dough (it was 3am and they were a bit sleep deprived) and they would sometimes forget the yeast or worse, double yeast. The doughs would have to be dumped and the days bake got on with. Sometimes the dough would grow the size of a dumpster and the embarrassed boys would be trying to hide it or contain it and it would be spewing forth like an alien being trying to escape. Very funny sometimes.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like an I Love Lucy episode! Too funny.
ReplyDeleteI believe it. Lol.
ReplyDeleteHa, ha, ha. I thought it was bad when I remembered two loaves 24 hours after leaving them in a cool oven!
ReplyDeleteWasn't there a children's book about a miller or a baker that had that same problem on a giant scale??
ReplyDeleteOh that is so funny. I thought that only happened to Lucy on the I Love Lucy show. : )
ReplyDeleteSome messes just seem to grow. :) I had nearly the same experience with of all things nectar for the hummingbirds. I had filled the feeder put the rest in the fridge just like always. I have this plastic container I have used for years. It leaked....badly...I had light red sugar water down two shelves leaked into the veggie bins and onto the floor under and in front of the refrigerator. It could not be worse if I put it in a spray bottle and sprayed it all over the inside of the fridge. It was even in the seal. Needless to say I threw away the container and I don't know how long I'll clean up sugar water. Sticky here - sticky there......
ReplyDeleteWhat a mess! I know what you mean. I've done the same thing but just overnight. Oh the joys of homemaking! lol
ReplyDeleteNow THAT'S when a camera would've been handy! I can't imagine cleaning that all up. You poor thing - ugh!
ReplyDeleteToo Funny!!
ReplyDeleteI too had a similar experience with bread dough. I simply became distracted and when I returned to the kitchen several hours later, it was all over my counter, down the cabinet doors and also in a large puddle on the floor.
Thanks for the great laugh ... I hadn't thought about my own "bread mis-hap" in years .. LOL!
Mrs.B
WOW! I want your bread recipe!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very funny story!! I can't imagine how shocked you were to see how the dough had risen and spread. I wouldn't have tried to bake it either!
ReplyDeleteI'm old enough that this reminds me of an early "I Love Lucy" program where she made bread. It must have appeared to take over as it spread. Thanks for the laugh!
ReplyDeleteBet it took a while to clean that up!
ReplyDeleteJust be glad you'd put it in the fridge and hadn't left it on the counter; you'd have ended up cleaning the kitchen after you got home from the hospital by the shound of it!
Sounds like an old-time horror movie. I can picture a yeasty blob expanding until it threatens to swallow an entire county...and beyond. LOL
ReplyDeleteThat's SO funny! I'll think of you next time I forget my dough!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, what a story. I can only imagine what kind of a mess that was!
ReplyDeleteGosh, I hope your emergency situation turned out alright in the end even if the bread didn't...
ReplyDeleteI have the hardest time getting dough to rise. So funny that your's was spilling out of the fridge.
ReplyDeleteI hate the ER. I'd rather give birth than go there.
My last trip to the emergency room included a tornado warning and they had to move me from my windowed room to an inside room. Sounds like the emergency fared better than the bread!
ReplyDeleteI hope your next batch stays right where it belongs!
Blessings,
Pamela
