Eight years ago when we moved half way across the country to an area that felt like the middle of nowhere to us, we had no idea how many challenges we would face and how many things we would miss.
We lived there long enough to feel at home, we made many great friends, and found a church we loved. But every once in a while we would miss things we had grown up with. Simple things but knowing they weren't available seemed to make us crave them more. Things like the soda; Kutztown Birch Beer or the only cheese curls that we liked, the sandwiches from Sheetz and a whole host of other things. But there was one thing we had never had until we moved there and that was Krispy Kreme donuts. It was love at first bite.
After we moved back two years ago we revelled in all the things we used to have and life was great except for one little thing. There were no Krispy Kremes.
Yesterday LV happened to drop his cell phone and shattered the screen so last night we went to get it replaced and decided to do our weekly grocery run in the same trip making it more fun since it wasn't in the same town we do most of our shopping.
As I pushed the cart around the corner of the dairy aisle my breath caught at the beautiful sight in front of me. A stand loaded with real Krispy Kreme donuts. After two years since I had one I simply had to get a box full of my favorites. After we got home I slowly ate one and I finally felt complete.

Krispy Kremes are delightful...unfortunately, here is Arizona, the economic downturn wiped out all but one of our Krispy Kreme donut shops. I remember attending a LA Dodgers baseball game at Dodger's Stadium in the late 1990s and one of the concession stands sold warm Krispy Kremes. Maybe not as traditional as a hot dog or nachos at the ball park, but much more delicious!
ReplyDeleteSister of the dough! I'm so happy you found KK's again. To turn the tables, my mother-in-law grew up near Jackson, OH and there is now an Amish community nearby. We were in town for a funeral, but afterwards someone brought in Amish doughnuts from a baker down the road. They were nearly the size of my head. I took one bite and said, "I've been waiting for this all my life." :-)
ReplyDeleteAh, we must be kindred spirits. They are the best, hands down. If ever you visit the Great Smoky Mtns. there's a KK shop in Knoxville where they make them. When there's a fresh batch their neon hot light comes on in the window. I'm droolin' now - surely I need something near there....
ReplyDeleteI can relate...moving from down south to up north as we did. I miss bbq pulled pork and fried catfish w/hushpuppies!!
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess you don't miss what you've never tried! We don't have many named brand donuts on offer here in the UK, just generic ones made by supermarket or local bakers. They vary in quality but you never know whether they will taste good or unpleasantly oily until you bite in.
ReplyDeleteYour post got me thinking about what I miss from my Yorkshire chidhood, though. My list included coltsfoot candy, dandelion and burdock pop, home made pickles, real (my aunt's home brewed) cider -watered down for kids as it was very potent - kaili (coloured sugar), liquorice root and, believe it or not, cod liver oil!
There's no accounting for personal taste, huh?
It's the simple things in life that make us most whole.
ReplyDeleteI'm a die-hard Dunkin Donuts fan, but if KK makes you happy - glad you found them. Every time we go back to Ohio, my husband has to stock up on Conn's potato chips, because as far as he's concerned, they're the best. To me - Conn's, Lays, generic, who cares?
ReplyDeleteIf you put your Krispy Kremes in the microwave for a few seconds (I think it's 8) they taste all fresh, warm and gooey. We don't have a KK store in the area anymore, but the grocery stores still sell them. I have to stay far away because I'm a diabetic and it's too easy to eat three in one sitting, which is dangerous for me.
ReplyDeleteNothing like them! We are within 50 miles of them -- which is very good for us. Close enough that we can get them (if we really need to) on a trip to the specialist; far enough away that we can't get them just when the mood strikes us. There is safety in those miles.
ReplyDeleteKrispie Kremes are little bits of heaven, and when they are fresh and warm, I have absolutely no will power to stop eating them. Unfortunately for me, there isn't one within a day's drive. There used to be one 4 hours away, but it went under. I shed a tear that day.
ReplyDeleteOH YUM! I was going to say the same thing as Linda from KY (above) to heat them for a few seconds and they are like warm and oh so good. Now you're making me want one. :) One time I saw Paula Deen make a Krispy Kreme donut bread pudding on her show. I've never tried it because I kind of go into a sugar coma just thinking about it - but I'd eat it if it were in front of me!! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteYou know I have never tried one and they are every where here. Next time I am at the market I may just have to been a box home with me :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings
I could go for a KRISPY CREME donut and a glass of milk right now!
ReplyDeleteAh yes, it's the little things that bring most pleasure!
ReplyDeleteI've never had the pleasure of Krispie Kremes, but we are surrounded by Duncan Donuts here - 10 in less than 4 miles. Sorry, make that 11: there's a new one that hasn't made Google Maps yet.
ReplyDeleteWow, I didn't realize they were so delicious. I'm overseas and one just opened a few blocks from here, replacing a fried chicken establishment. Maybe I need to go there! I always enjoy your posting!
ReplyDeleteI love Krispy Kreme donuts especilly first thing in the morning when you can get them hot. Oh, so yummy.
ReplyDeleteOur son was always talking about Krispy Kremes. ALWAYS. One day, I found a stand in Walmart that was LOADED!!! I was so excited! They were brought in from a Krispy Kreme shop in the city 45 miles away ... and then ... they closed! They CLOSED!!! How could they? :-(
ReplyDeleteThey say your sense of smell and taste are the best memory makers... I agree.
I love when our downtown KK shop turns on their blinking red lights; it reminds me of my childhood and the old store that was damaged by a hurricane. I love the original glazed and chocolate-iced cream-filled! YUM! :-D
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean about missing things when you move. There was the best Amish bakery in Guthrie, Kentucky that we used to go to. However, they did tell me before we moved that they do ship:-) I'm still wondering how much it would cost to have them ship to Hawaii?? LOL
