It seems I get a shoe catalog in the mail at least once a week. I usually browse through them a little bit and then toss them in the trash. When ever we go to the mall all the different shoe stores only get a brief glance from me as I walk past them. While I can admire a lot of different shoes having a variety of them in my closet has never been very high on my list of priorities.
I have a total of three pairs of shoes. A comfortable pair to wear while running errands, a less comfortable pair that I use to go to church or any special occasions and then an awful pair that should have been burned three years ago already but I'm still hanging onto them since they come in very handy when I need to go outside and it's wet or muddy. Their soles have become loose a long time ago and every step I take they flap open and closed making it appear as if I were wearing talking shoes.
We don't wear our shoes in the house and every one has their shoes and boots lined neatly at the bottom of the basement stairs. Having a baby in my arms I find it easiest to simply feel for my shoe with my toes and then slip into them. It worked well until I was sitting happily in church and needed something from the diaper bag. As I bent down I was horrified to see one nice Sunday shoe and one awful shoe smiling up at me with its gaping tattered "mouth" The shock of seeing it made me forget why I had bent down to begin with and I sat up gasping for air and hoping no one had seen my shoes.
As I tried to collect my senses I realized I still need something from the diaper bag so I had to bend down again. The ugly shoe now seemed to be taunting me and I quickly retrieved what I needed, tucked my feet under my chair, and carefully placed the diaper bag in hopes it would block the view of my feet from any one else.
As much as I dislike shoe shopping I think it's officially time I do just that.

Oh, dear! That is so funny, but at least people can't really see your feet much in church. Might have been worse if you had been in the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteIf it's any comfort, you're not alone. A friend of ours - male - was teaching a class and wondered why he was so much more amusing today than yesterday until he dropped a piece of chalk. When he reached down to get it he discovered he was wearing a brown loafer and a black wingtip.
Oh my goodness! Too funny!!
ReplyDeleteI have done the same thing. I went to take my son to the school bus and I was wearing two different shoes! You should take a poll I bet many many have done this LOL!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Joanne
Haha. Sounds like something I'd do.
ReplyDeleteLOL! That's too funny! Maybe it's time for you to buy some cowgirl boots and move out west! We wear them with everything here.
ReplyDeleteLOL You are not alone! I went to church once with 2 different shoes - only I'm on the worship team and get to walk back and forth (several times) to the stage in front of everybody.
ReplyDeleteShoes are a bit of asore point in our house since my husband is a size 14 (when he wears shoes, which is only when he has to) and the rest of us have wide feet. Those of you with "normal" feet take a look the next time you're out, and count how many styles are available in wide sizes. :(
A friend of mine cleaned out her closet and gave me six pairs of Easy Spirit shoes, same style, different colors. So, why am I keeping one that could be described as your ugly ones? 'Cause they are comfy, can go quickly and I don't really care what happens to them. I give thanks that they haven't accompanied me to church, though. I'll be checking during each service for a while, just to be certain!
ReplyDeleteGetting up in the morning and not turning on the light as I got dressed and out the door for work, I had slipped on a pair of shoes. It wasn't until I got to work and got out of the car that I discovered that not only was I wearing two different shoes but one shoe was a "flat" and one was a "heel". I don't know how I could have walked to my car from the house and not noticed that much at least. I ended up leaving work and buying a new pair of shoes that morning as I couldn't continue my day, in a public environment with customers, wearing two completely different styles of shoe.
ReplyDeleteI know a little how you felt. A week and a half ago, we arrived at our homeschool writing group meeting and I realized that one of my boys was wearing a shirt that was not only filthy but also had several holes in it. Normally I try to look everyone over before we walk out the door but that morning I had been distracted trying to set up a test for a vehicle we were thinking of buying. Oops--especially since we were 50 minutes from home, way too far to run home for another shirt!
ReplyDeleteWhat---no Manolo Blahniks in your closet? I am simply SHOCKED!
ReplyDeleteI live in sneakers or Teva sandals with only the occasional foray into a heel...or a shoe store. I feel your pain.
Thanks for sharing that. It really made me smile.
ReplyDeleteYou're so lucky - you must have a good back. I'm not a shoe person either (as far as looks go) but comfort is another issue. I only work a 4-hour shift and have to bring a change of shoes so I can change half-way through because my back starts hurting. It's one of the only things I'll spend decent money on. Then when I get home, I change again. I need to do some weeding because some are so old but I'm afraid as soon as they're gone, those will be the ones that seem the most comfortable. LOL!
ReplyDeleteI hate shoes in the house but I can't walk around barefoot - it's killer on my back, too. Everybody else is either barefoot or wears socks. Luckies. :)
I had the same experience for church so I know exactly how you feel. Except it really got my tickle bone and all I could do was laugh. Softly, of course.
ReplyDeleteI can sooooo relate to your story...I have to be at my Grama's at like 6ish every morning (weekdays) to stay with her while my mom goes to work. I don't turn on the lights because I don't want to wake grumpy, I mean my husband. I got down to Gramas about a week ago only to discover, I had worn one sandal and one regular shoe! lol...
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like my boyfriend... he's had the same pair of shoes for like 5 years (he only had TWO, these old sneakers and his school shoes) and yesterday he got a new pair of sneakers cuz the first pair he had were soaking wet and he was going to the city. I found this amusing :)
ReplyDeleteOh my, I think that you are due for a good pair of shoes! I'm not a shoe person by any means, and even hated to wear them in the house. But then, I always had freezing feet while working in my kitchen during the winter, unless I wore slippers. Then every time i went out doors, I'd take the slippers off and slip into shoes. And I was always looking for slippers or shoes.
ReplyDeleteThen, I got hooked on flylady, who says putting on lace-up shoes in the morning helps to keep you at your work, plus you are ready for anything, any time you need to run out the door, etc. And, you want the shoes to fit well. I had much warmer feet this winter, and rarely have to spend time looking for shoes anymore, because they are on my feet! I do change them to go to the barn, or put on boots.
I've found it's best to have several pairs for my children, esp. the girls. I just hate being pushed for time to go somewhere, and here we find a pair of shoes with dog or chicken poop on them. :(
With summer coming though, I'll probably have sandels on my feet most of the time.
It would appear that no one is laughing AT you, but everyone is laughing WITH you :-) ...including me! I did this with sneakers. I also did this with a pair of T staps where one was tan and one was black. It was dark when I got dressed... LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteMy aunt wore a black shoe and a blue shoe to my cousins wedding, then accidently did it again at my uncles funeral.
ReplyDeleteI do have more than 3 pairs of shoes. But, I have a similar enbarassing moment. I have a really old dusgusting pair of flip flops I used to water the garden, and one hot Sunday morning I did just that quickly before getting the girls up. I did not look at my feet again until the middle of Sunday School when I looked down and there they were. I'm positive I turned all shades of red. I even considered running home to switch them. But, I'm sure I was the only person too worried about it.
ReplyDeleteThis post made me laugh out loud today ... thanks for sharing!

Last Sunday my toddler's church pants were nowhere to be found, so I told my oldest to put his good jeans on him. As I was sitting in the pew with him on my lap I noticed he had flowers embroidered on his jeans and ruffles on the pockets. I couldn't figure out where little girl's jeans could have come from since our youngest girl is 8 years old. When I looked closer, I realized he was wearing my 8 year old's burmuda shorts as pants. For the rest of the day I was fielding questions "What's that you say. Why, yes. Yes those are flowers and ruffles on my son's pants. What do ya know,"
