Instead I took one of the little red squirrel that was busy gathering walnuts by our backdoor this morning.
We see chipmunks often but it is a very rare occasion when we actually get to see a squirrel. They are so much fun to watch. The walnuts were almost as big as this little guy and I had to admire his plucky can do attitude.
I think I may have to store this little moment away in my memory for future reference when things in life look overwhelming or impossible. If a tiny squirrel can tackle a huge walnut surely we can handle what ever gets placed in our path of life as well.
I love, love, love squirrels.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice post. We don't ever see chipmunks here, but have many squirrels. One year, I watched as one little red squirrel, over and over and day after day, carried walnuts from the tree on our property next door across our property (braving the dog!) to the pine trees along our driveway where they were being stashed for winter. What a job!
ReplyDeleteSquirrels are cute to watch buy not so cute when there a lots of them in your yard and they get in your attic.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm not a big fan of squirrels!! I've heard them called tree rats!!
what is the difference between a chipmunk and squirell??? I still have no idea!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful trees and waterfall!
Vermin. They are vermin. No different from rats or mice.
ReplyDeleteI love watching squirrels, too. And deer in the front yard (they do impact what we put in flower gardens!) Last night we took a friend home and watched a family of jack rabbits become insulted that we intruded on their nocturnal picnic. Pigeon watching in the city just doesn't quite match, does it?
ReplyDeleteI adore squirrels. I know they can be a nuisance, but I think they are so cute and clever. Hurricane Irene knocked over a tree in our yard, which contained a nest with three baby squirrels. It is illegal to keep them as pets, but the shelters were so full they were actually giving instructions on hand raising them. I gave them baths to get rid of the fleas, got them a large cage, and my husband and I fed them puppy milk and Pedialite. They were such a delight! We finally released them at a local park. Hated to part with them, but with two dogs and a cat, it wasn't going to work, and we knew it.
ReplyDeleteWe have LOTS of squirrels in our bckyard. They are fun to watch in spite of the fact that they raid the bird feeders.
ReplyDeleteI just discovered your blog and became your newest follower. I am really enjoying your stories from your childhood. I so agree with the saying on your sidebar about this moment being your life. I try to remember to enjoy each day, and not worry about the past or the future.
The Florida squirrels don't have an ounce of extra fat on them. I guess the don't need the extra layer of fat to keep warm during the cold winter months because we don't have such weather.
ReplyDeleteI just heard someone be amazed at seeing a squirrel for the first time here in Cape Town as they had moved recently from Johannesburg where they are apparently very rare to see.
ReplyDeleteHaving lived in West Va, Virginia & Pennsylvania most of my life (USA), I just took it for granted that everyone had seen squirrels. Guess not.
I would agree with your analogy, but add that God never gives us something too difficult for us to handle without giving us a way out ie when a door closes, a window opens.
Cape Town, South Africa
Who knew that squirrels could teach us a life lesson? I know God created them, but to us squirrels are a nuisance. They eat the food that we put out for the birds. They are cute, though, I have to admit.
ReplyDeleteGreat post with a wonderful message!
ReplyDeleteSquirrels really are funny to watch but around here they're suicidal! They sit on top of our fence and tease the dogs and seem to wait until I'm driving down the street to make the mad dash to get to the other side. I can't help but like them though...well, mostly. :)
