I was sitting here typing, listening to the roar of the waterfall. The creek is extra swollen this morning from all the rain we got last night. Glancing out the window I happened to see a cow give birth to a calf right in the middle of the creek. I frantically tried getting hold of the owners to come take care of things but no one was answering their phones which left, guess who, to go wade through the mud and the muck and rescue the poor little thing before it drowned.
You can now add midwife to the list of things you are. Glad mom and calf are doing fine because of your fast thinking about them and not your self. Enjoy your day.

ReplyDeleteHow did you do it? Did you have to lift it on its feet and make it walk? What a hero(ine) you are! I have lived in cattle country long enough to know that the loss of a calf (besides being sad) is $$$$$ to the owners. I am sure they are grateful to you.

I thought the same as Tiff: Isn't it kind of odd for a cow to give birth in a creek? Not that cows are particularly smart, or anything - I guess I would have thought some kind of instinct would make them head for higher ground.
ReplyDeleteI think it is quite odd for her to give birth in a stream, too, but on second thought, I know women who have given birth in a garage, back seat of car, etc. Maybe she was trying to head to higher ground and just couldn't make it? :) Holly

I just stumbled onto your blog from another I followed and I am INTRIGUED!!!!! I LOVE Amish fiction novels and an so excited and curious to how much of it actually exists in the Amish world. ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful that you were able to save the calf but my main reason for writing is the Royal Wedding.
ReplyDeleteIt's my heritage and I'm enthralled. I've loved every minute of it and I am sure that Diana is looking down to her darling son and rejoicing.
The love he feels for his bride shines through. He is going to have a much better life with his chosen one than Diana ever did.
