Pant, pant, puff, puff. Wow! I got way more than I bargained for this forenoon and it sucessfully wiped the blog post I had started out of the window.
I was sitting here typing, listening to the roar of the waterfall. The creek is extra swollen this morning from all the rain we got last night. Glancing out the window I happened to see a cow give birth to a calf right in the middle of the creek. I frantically tried getting hold of the owners to come take care of things but no one was answering their phones which left, guess who, to go wade through the mud and the muck and rescue the poor little thing before it drowned.
It is now safely on the bank with it's mother who is now being all motherly, and I feel like propping my feet up on the recliner and enjoying a tall glass of lemonade.

You can now add midwife to the list of things you are. Glad mom and calf are doing fine because of your fast thinking about them and not your self. Enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteawww, you are a hero! What a cutie-pie:) Hope the rest of your day is a bit calmer!
ReplyDeleteHow did you do it? Did you have to lift it on its feet and make it walk? What a hero(ine) you are! I have lived in cattle country long enough to know that the loss of a calf (besides being sad) is $$$$$ to the owners. I am sure they are grateful to you.
ReplyDeleteWow! How exciting! That is a big ole' momma and they can be quite protective. Glad you and the calf are safe! Way to be a good neighbor! :)
ReplyDeleteWow you saved a life today!!!Hooray for you!! Go ahead and prop those feet up, you deserve it! Blessings, Joanne
ReplyDeleteYou certainly deserve the rest of the day off, lol. Cows get me - the things they do to their calves..
ReplyDeleteWOW! That makes for an exciting morning for certain. Glad all turned out well.
ReplyDeleteYou deserve a rest and a glass of lemonade!
ReplyDeleteYou are a great neighbor and I am sure the Mama is very thankful for saving her baby:)
Wow, that's what I call a jumpstart to your day! :) Love your blog and look forward to returning!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you were there! Do cows normally birth in such odd places?
ReplyDeleteOh, and was it a boy or a girl ?:)
I thought the same as Tiff: Isn't it kind of odd for a cow to give birth in a creek? Not that cows are particularly smart, or anything - I guess I would have thought some kind of instinct would make them head for higher ground.
ReplyDeleteI think it is quite odd for her to give birth in a stream, too, but on second thought, I know women who have given birth in a garage, back seat of car, etc. Maybe she was trying to head to higher ground and just couldn't make it? :) Holly
ReplyDeleteWonder Woman!
ReplyDeleteBless you! You certainly have a mother's heart. I'm glad you were able to save the dear little calf and I'm sure the mommy is too.
ReplyDeleteWow..I did not realize cows had water births...does this cow spend it's day watching birthing shows on TV?
ReplyDelete~~HUGS~~
LOL Wildflower!
ReplyDeleteMary Ann...you certainly do know how to get some excitement into your life! Good for you!
And my first thoughts were, 'you never know what the day will bring you.' See my blog today, written before I came here!

Who but Y-O-U would have that kind of morning???? Hey, today's Scott's birthday, too, so that little calf is sharing his/her birthday with someone special. :D Good job, lifesaver!
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing. Enjoy your lemonade. You earned it. ...Marsha
ReplyDeleteThis is such a sweet picture! I am always in awe every time I see something born, no matter what it is, it's amazing!!! I just stumbled onto your blog from another I followed and I am INTRIGUED!!!!! I LOVE Amish fiction novels and an so excited and curious to how much of it actually exists in the Amish world. It has actually inspired me to live a simpler lift and for that I am grateful!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing. I would have had no idea what to do. Good job. What a wonderful neighbor.
ReplyDeleteGlad you saw this happening!
ReplyDeleteYour instincts took over no matter how hard the job...bless you and I bet mama was happy.
Karen
What an exciting morning you had. So glad that you were in the right spot at the right time to help the calf onto the bank. And I am sure mama was happy you were there too.
ReplyDeleteA-mazing! What an unforgettable adventure.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Just from looking away from the things around us all, becoming a solution. Would that we all could be so helpful sometime.
ReplyDeletelol, so my midwife was wrong when she said that mammals in the wild do NOT give birth in water ;)

Mary Ann to the rescue!
ReplyDeleteVery eventful... Glad the calf is OK, and that its Mother is taking care of it well already!
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful that you were able to save the calf but my main reason for writing is the Royal Wedding.
ReplyDeleteIt's my heritage and I'm enthralled. I've loved every minute of it and I am sure that Diana is looking down to her darling son and rejoicing.
The love he feels for his bride shines through. He is going to have a much better life with his chosen one than Diana ever did.
I wish them wedded bliss.
I'm an Australian of British heritage and I love my roosts.
I think we all love our heritage.
