The Ice Cube

We are in the process of getting ready to move so life has been extra busy. Most days that isn't a problem since our schedule seems to be working out nicely even if it means less time spent blogging.  So far this week though my plans all disappeared soon after they were made. No amount of trying to get back on track seems to work.

This forenoon I started hearing this horrible noise, I went to investigate thinking there might be something wrong with our dryer or one of the space heaters. Those all seemed to be working just fine and the noise kept growing louder and I discovered its coming from the refrigerator. I went to open the freezer compartment and the door was frozen shut. After yanking on it vigorously it finally opened and the sight that met my eyes was not pleasant!

Evidently the ice-maker which we haven't used for several years finally decided it wants to contribute to the running of our household and proceeded to make ice. But instead of making many useful little cubes it only made one gigantic one and froze all the food inside of it. It then added a few icicles for a spooky touch.

It then decided to try to dispense some crushed ice and ground furiously but even with all it's efforts the chunk of ice was too much for even it and the harder it tried the more noise it made. I tried in vain to shut it off but it continued in a fit of rebellion with even more noise.  After several hours it finally got tired and shut off on it's own. I sat down weakly, feeling totally spent from the hours of noise I had endured.

Once my husband comes home tonight I'll ask him to pry the enormous cube out and try to separate the food. I'm hoping I won't have to thaw all of it because having a barbecue for the whole neighborhood had not been on my schedule.

  1. Oh, those menacing icemakers; modern convenience, indeed!
Call for reinforcements! I think I see icy daggers waiting to pounce on unsuspecting chisels.

  2. I can just imagine the stress that must have caused you. I am not a happy lady when my appliances don't behave themselves and because I am not at all mechanically inclined there isn't much I can do about it. I usually call my son in law. I hope your husband is able to fix the problem and the rest of your moving preparation goes more smoothly.
    God bless

  3. Oh dear!!

When I needed a new fridge I blatently refused to get an ice maker. Do you know how hard it was to find a fridge without an icemaker in it? The salesman told me that I could just keep the ice maker and not hook it up but I protested that it would just be a waste of valuable freezer space.

I hope the polar expedition ends successfully for you.

  4. What a mess! When we bought our fridge, we got one without an ice maker. But it didn't matter, they delivered one with an ice maker to us anyway and told us to just keep it. The thing made noise for a day until we figured out what it was and how to turn it off. We've never used it. Someone told us that the ice maker is always the first thing to go bad in a refrigerator, but they all have them!

  5. the more gizmos that come with a product the more problems come with the same product. my fav. example is to try to find a car with good old fashioned roll down windows instead of electronic ones. hard to find if not impossible! hope all goes well!

  7. What a mess. Sometimes it seems if it is not one thing it is something else. Hopefully you can get all that food apart, without any problems.

  8. That pic was something!! I am so sorry for the mess the ice-maker caused you. We have friends who were out of town for a week, came home to find their ice-maker thing in the door started spewing ice it was still spitting it out when they got home and apparently had been doing it for a while as it had melted and floors ruined...they now have a neighbor to go in to check on things when they are out of town.

  13. Sounds like a chapter from a Stephen King novel:) If I were you, I think I would be afraid to go into the kitchen this morning. No telling what the ice maker has been up to overnight.

  15. Just what you needed when you're trying to pack, huh?

My dishwasher gave up earlier this week, and there's no room in the budget for a replacement. I feel your appliance problem pain!

  16. I remember the same thing happening to our fridge when I was younger. I think we ended up having to thaw out all our food though... hope that doesn't happen to you! It was fun for us kids but I'm sure my mom was stressed.

  17. Thank god for the icemaker.
maybe he perhaps decided you needed to spend more time with your friends before you go. Thaw the mess and have fellowship with your friends, family and neighbors.
