Wal-Mart Adventures

Last week when it was time to go on our weekly grocery run we headed for our local Wal-Mart Supercenter. As much as I don't like admitting it, most of our grocery shopping occurs there. It never fails to be somewhat of an adventure.

The first obstacle we face is the droves of people exiting the building using the enter door. After weaving through them I smile and nod at the Wal-Mart greeter, while trying not to run over her with my cart since the person ahead of me has stopped suddenly to inspect some kind of Halloween decorations.

I need toothpaste which leads me into the bowels of the store where teens are loitering in the aisles on their cell phones and I get nervous that maybe my hair isn't just right or my blouse might have a stain from Buddy. I know it really isn't that bad but The People of Wal-Mart website has made me just a little paranoid and it's one of my life's missions to never appear on it.

I decide to pass the book display and feel thrilled to see Life with Lily.  Someone is browsing the Amish book selection and I contemplate offering to sign my book for her if she buys it but decide to let her shop in peace and walk on.

I head over to the grocery section and breathe a sigh of relief. It's filled mostly with moms trying to find food for their families. As I push the cart along Buddy is busy zipping my coat open and shut. I survey the cheese section and find jalapeno string cheese. I'm always looking for things to tuck into LV's lunch and thinking he will enjoy them I toss a pack into the cart.

The rest of my shopping passes uneventfully until I'm at the check out. The cashier swipes the cheese and her machine beeps wildly. It's a purchase that requires more identification to make sure I'm not under age. She calls for assistance and after looking me over they decide I'm old enough to enjoy the cheese.

I pay for my purchases and as I exit the store using the exit door a group of people enters. Half of them use the enter door and the other half uses the one I'm trying to use.

I arrive home safely and take a picture of the cheese that caused all the problems at the check out. The groceries are put away and as I relax I can't help but wonder what adventures await at Wal-Mart for me next week.

  2. Well gosh, we can't have minors sneaking around and buying *jalapeno* string cheese and possibly peddling it to friends out behind the school gym.

  3. LOL What Clisby said!

I wonder if that person bought your book. I think it would be very cool to "run into" the author of a book I wanted to purchase at Walmart.

  4. What?!? Why would you need an ID to buy string cheese?

I got carded buying Nyquil a few weeks ago. You need to be 18 to buy it. I'm 37. If I wanted to get high or something, I'd buy booze. It would sure be a lot cheaper.

All this needing ID to buy stuff is insulting.

  5. @Meagan - They are keeping track of how much Nyquil you buy because it is used to make Meth.

I have never been carded for buying cheese though. Off to Google to see what that is all about.

  6. Meagan, Sarah, I'm guessing it was only a glitch in their system because this wasn't the first time I bought jalapeno cheese and it never happened before.

We all thought it was amusing.

  7. LOL! I love your story!

I cracked up when you said it is one of your life's missions to never appear on The People of Wal-Mart!
And getting carded to buy cheese!HaHa!

I too would think it was so neat to run into the author of a book I was going to purchase!

  8. I've been carded for buying white out, and can completely understand that. But cheese, really? What on earth are those minors going to do with cheese, eat it?!

  10. I too do most of my grocery shopping at Wal-mart. I also do the membership stores and one little locally owned one (wish it was closer to me). I'm always relieved when I don't find myself among the People of Walmart pictures LOL! I hate the crowds there so I go EARLY...Like to get there by six a.m. to avoid the crowds!

  11. I had to giggle at the thought of being carded for cheese! :-) Just a word though...if I'm not mistaken Kraft recalled Jalapeno String Cheese for some reason a few days ago. Might want to check that out :-) Blessings!

  14. TOO funny about the string cheese! I wonder if it was because of the recall and it was plugged in the system but employees didn't know or something? I know you're completely able, but I found this site so you can at least check your UPC number on it: http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm323007.htm

On the other hand, if someone said they were the author of a book I was looking at, I would want to see their ID to make sure. LOL You are hilarious - trying never to make it to the people of Wal Mart website. What always strikes me when I see that is the people don't look like they're showing off, they really do look genuinely clueless and weird! Have a good Wednesday ~
