Something I really enjoyed about our new home was that with more than fifty trees in our yard there was an abundance of birds. Their cheerful songs filled the air all day long and I loved listening to them.
There was a big maple tree right outside the living room beside our sandbox. A family of squirrels lived in it and we spent many happy hours watching them as they chased each other playfully and later were busy storing nuts for the winter.
One day as the children were playing in the sandbox there were little bits of something falling down on them. they were puzzled until they looked up to see a squirrel sitting on a branch above their heads getting a nut ready to eat Making little bits of the shell fall down on their heads. The squirrels were used to having them play in the sandbox and never bothered to scamper away from them.
Sailor was sure the squirrel was making the bits of nut shell fall on them on purpose and was thrilled about it.

Such sweet memories :o)
ReplyDeleteHey, if that's all that was falling on their heads, then that's OK!! The squirrels probably got a kick out of it, too. LOL
ReplyDeleteI imagine the birds were hanging around to eat some of those insects you told us about. I love listening to the birds too, especially early morning and late evening while working in my gardens. I wonder if they are praising the Lord as the Bible tells
ReplyDeletethat 'everything that has breath praises the Lord.'
One particular bird has a beautiful melodic evening song that echo's off the hills and drifts on the evening breeze into the little valley where I am. This lovely bird song makes me stop my work and just listen. Another precious blessing form our Lord.
Mountain Mama had the same thought I did -- plenty of bird food with all those insects around! And there's nothing quite like a squirrel who is used to the people around him. I am grateful for the bird songs that accompany our dawning mornings. What better way to awaken?
ReplyDeleteIt's great when children are outdoors noticing the wild creatures. Squirrels are always great kid fun.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE squirrels! I have had a red, black, gray and what looked to be a black/gray squirl in our back yard. My brother used to have on that would scold him often from the tree top! Squirrels have so much personality!
ReplyDeleteSweet! :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet and funny story! Squirrels are very mischievous so I wouldn't be surprised if he did it on purpose. :-)
ReplyDeleteWith all the other stuff going on I imagine it was a relief to sit and watch the birds and squirrels. We like watching them, too.
ReplyDeleteWe have lots of funny squirrel stories from growing up in the country - including one that couldn't jump! The squirrels in my friend's yard would bomb their cats with nuts whenever they went outside.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! We also enjoy watching squirrels and have a corn feeder for them during the winter.
