Cravings

Ever since I have been pregnant I have been having some rather odd cravings. I would love to sit down right now with a raw cucumber, sour cream, and blueberry yogurt. And yes, enjoy all three at the same time.

Yogurt is not something that I would normally even want anywhere near my mouth. But since there is a baby on the way I could consume gallons of it!

For all you mothers and mothers to be out there. I would love to hear some of the things you craved while pregnant.

61 comments:

  1. First Daughter - watermelon. I could not get enough watermelon!! With Second Daughter, though, we moved to the other end of the taste spectrum -- Frito chili pie with dill pickles. With Son, there were no cravings, no morning sickness. A welcome respite!!

  2. I craved lemons. Also a combination of tuna, cottage cheese and chillis, not too weird but it was overwhelming.

  3. Your cravings sound like you're needing a lot of calcium. It's a hoot the combinations people come up with to fulfill their needs. I ate sauerkraut straight from the can before both our girls arrived. ;)

  4. I craved Tinned Tuna Fish by the bucket load, but I could not stand the smell of any form of meat cooking almost from day one until after my son was born

  5. Steak, salt, cheese and onion crisps, green chilis and almost but not quite - durian. It's gone from smelling like a blocked drain to being this intoxicating perfume. And Indian thosai, dry pancakes, with lentil daal. I could eat those all day long.

  6. I craved chili cheese dogs and any kind of salsa. Another was tortillas with eggs and hot tomato sauce with cheese on top. I could eat it all day long!!

  7. McDonals's chicken nuggets.. with my first.. something I would not TOUCH today. Tuna fish w/mayo sandwich & chili (yes together) with my second.

  8. All I can say is, I'm in trouble when I get pregnant; I already often eat strange food combinations. If it gets worse for me when I get pregnant who knows what i'll end up eating!

My Dad always says don't dismiss something as being gross if you haven't tried it. Mind you, this is someone who enjoys a good lemon curd (lemon cheese, I think you would call it) and salad cream sandwich on a regular basis, and who thinks wanting to use up leftovers for a stew is a good enough excuse for putting jam and marmalade in said stew, but still... *Shrugs*

  9. captain crunch. this was 28 yrs ago and actually i think it was just an excuse to eat a cereal that was pricey to us back then. but it was delicious. now, it just doesn't hit the spot.

  10. Kimchee. (Korean food in general, but especially kimchee). And jalapenos. And Coca-cola. I told my husband our children should have been born grasping Coke stock certificates in their hands.

  11. I always thought it was weird that the simplest of foods would trigger my morning sickness and yet the greasy, nasty stuff I craved. I craved bacon cheeseburgers, loaded french fries, pizza, blueberry waffles, milkshakes, white cheddar cheez-its and grilled cheese sandwiches. At least I craved melon, too.

  12. Forget green olives and baby dill pickles.

  13. I wanted SALT! Chips, fries, pickles..etc. Of course they tell you to be careful that you don't swell eating it!

  14. Mexican food & Mexican food on a daily, 3 x's per day basis. Hummm, since I still crave it, I wonder if I'm still pregant (hee, hee). I'd like to have it everyday but usually settle for 2-3 times per month.

  15. Ok, this is really really really bad, I didn't really crave certain foods, BUT...with one of my five pregnancies, can't remember which, I LOVED the smell of gasoline. Scary. It was everything I could do not to such in the fumes at the gas station.

  16. Fried snapper fish in hot pepper sauce with baby number one. Ice-cream with crispy fried bacon with baby number two. Never a real drinker - I couldn't abide even a slight smell of alcohol with my first and, though I no longer have to walk out of wedding receprtions etc. I haven't touched a drop in the ensuing 32 years.
My best friend M, was addicted to wood - she'd buy ice-pops, melt and throw away the ice part and munch the wooden stick. She was caught in her classroom munching on pencils - her students of about 5 years old would have been told to stop if they chewed pencils as the pondered their work. Imagine her embarrassment on having a group of them walk in on her as she actually ATE one, and no, William was not born lead damaged!

  17. I ate soooo much potatoes while pregnant with Gnome and I just couldn't bring myself to eat chicken unless it had been roasted. Even then it wasn't as appealing. Sometimes when Tom ate chicken, I ate potatoes!

  18. Cold stewed tomatoes. I loved them and would put cans in the fridge, get them real cold and eat them. My menopausal state is confirmed by the nausea I feel even writing this.

  19. With my son it was French bread, cereal, and McDonald's soft serve cones with butterscotch. I gained 65 lbs with him!

With my daughter it was egg drop soup from our favorite Chinese food place. They'd see me or hubby come in and they'd say "egg drop soup!" It was funny. :)

  20. I've been having the grossest cravings. Specifically salt and/or meat. I have no clue what I can do to reduce the salt cravings, but I'm getting some pre-natal iron supplements (I already take a B12) to see if that helps with the meat cravings - I've had meat the past three days (twice on Saturday), something needs to be done.

  21. Junky cereal with all three of them...I'd wake up in the middle of the night and eat a bowl of cereal all the time. Lots of fruit with #1, specifically oranges and crispy apples. Lots of medium-rare red meat and cheesecake (which I always hated before then, but like now) with #2. Back to fruit, anything vinegary, and spinach strawberry salads with #3.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I always crave cottage cheese with thawed frozen peas on the top. Sounds gross, but it is really tasty. I usually crave protein too, like chicken sandwiches.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Clam chowder has been one of my cravings. It didn't matter how many times a day I ate it. Another would be cottage cheese on green pepper pizza.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Usually fruit... at the end of my pregnancy with my first I could eat 5 pounds of mandarin tangerines in one sitting! Pink Lady apples too. With my girls I craved bean and cheese burritos at the beginning of the pregnancy. But with my last, even before I knew for sure I was pregnant I HAD to have Red Robin Fries with ranch- every night for about 2-3 weeks. I loved the garlic and salt. That is the only unhealthy thing I had to have.

  25. Hot and Spicy Tacos, salty Old Cure Smithfield Ham, Tabasco Sauce, Orange Juice(but it made me vomit) yet I could eat my weight in oranges--go figure...Black Walnut cake with Chocolate Syrup...and the proverbial Dill Pickles.

  26. Reading through some of these cravings makes me laugh and not feel so bad about my own. Child #1 I craved green grapes and sauerkraut juice mixed with Vegetable juice.
Child #2 Red Delicious apples and walnuts together, child #3 raw parsnips and raspberries and ice cream, Child #4 meat, lots of it and green beans, Child #5 Banana milk shakes & Kosher dill pickles and especially the pickled garlic in them.

  27. Hi,
I was crazy about plums and grapes both times when I was expecting. I couldn't get enough of them.
    Congratulations with your pregnancy !!!
    Have a great day.

  28. Lettuce salad and Italian steak sandwiches from Texas Toms-a restaurant that was 3 1/2 hours away for the 1st one. With my 2nd-the extremely hot sauce from the Mexican Villa restaurants in our area. I figure that must explain my daughters temper.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I craved bean and cheese burritos and peanut butter with all of my pregnancies! Wait... I still crave those things! What does this mean? LOL!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I craved biscuits and tomato gravy. I ate it almost every day.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Frosting! The last month of my pregnancy with my son I craved frosting and it had to be good frosting, like the kind on wedding cakes. I could have ate it by the spoonful. I did resort to making some myself and eating it.

  32. I'm pregnant right now and reading through the comments is making me just want to "hurl". LOL!! WOW... some of those combinations.

I would have to say that I didn't think I really had that many cravings. Let me put it this way... I know what I don't want to eat if I want to sleep at night.
    No coffee or Ice Cream.

Yet, I will say that over my past two and now this pregnancy it was either fruit (apples or citrus)or spicy, hot Mexican or Salty Chinese... nothing too weird.

  33. I tend to crave ice cream, whether pregnant or not. :) But I noticed the ice cream craving was different between my two pregnancies. My first pregnancy, I craved chocolate and mint. During my second, I craved strawberry and fruit-flavored ice creams. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Avocados...I can't get enough of them when I'm pregnant.
Salsa is another one (only my homemade salsa)

I've also craved deviled eggs too.

    ReplyDelete
  35. With my daughter I couldn't abide most meat. I craved cantaloupe with her. We would go to a steak bar and hubby would eat steak and I would eat all the melon off the salad bar LOL.
With my son I could eat anything I wanted (Except Tuna because of allergy during pregnancies) but I craved peanut butter and jelly. I would eat 3 of them at a sitting. To this day that child still LOVES pb&j

  36. Dont gross out when you read this-but what I craved was pickled pigs feet. I never gave into that craving. I dont know why as Id never eaten them before but my dad used to eat them. What I did eat was shredded wheat with milk and I am not and wasnt a milk drinker.

  37. Watermelon with my first and he was born in June, so pretty much all I could get was the flavorless stuff (in January) at buffets.

My second was runny yoke eggs, over medium would be what my waitress friend would call them. Anyway, I could eat them all day all the time at the end of my pregnancy and then I don't think I have them but maybe three times since.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh yeah banana milkshakes, with my second :) I mixed protein powder in them and that made me feel better about all the sugar.

  39. With #1 it started with strawberries in the dead of winter (hard to find at that time ) ,any fruit I craved. Later in the pregnancy I craved pimento cheese sandwiches that I would have NEVER eaten before, and I still can eat it.
With #2, before I knew I was pregnant my mother asked me if I was pregnant because I was suddenly eating sweets voraciously where I had NEVER liked sweets before.
With both late in the pregnancy I ate Ritz crackers with sharp Cheddar and jalapino slices.

  40. Grilled cheese sandwiches; fresh strawberries; and once we drove for 45 miles to find a place that served hot fudge sundaes!

    ReplyDelete
  41. with my first child, my son, I was pregnant through the summer. I craved (are you ready?) cold borscht, which is beet soup. With sour cream. With my daughter, it was ice cream. bowls of it, sundaes, & cones.

    ReplyDelete
  42. When my mom was pregnant with me forty years ago, she said that she craved orange juice and that is why I like orange juice a lot today.

    ReplyDelete
  43. kimchee! the wicked spicy kind. horseradish and beef. the smell alone of ripe cantaloupe is more than i can bear, like rotting garbage.

    ReplyDelete
  44. With my first it was mac and cheese made from the blue box and brussel sprouts. With my second it was buttered bread. I could eat half a loaf in one sitting. With my third it was mixed vegetables right out of the can. I couldn't stand the smell of meat with the first two. Had my gallbladder removed after #2 was born and it didn't bother me to cook or eat meat with #3.

  45. 1st son was White Castles, (I don't even like white castles)
2nd son was banana splits, and third son was oranges..TONS of oranges. (not fake orange flavors either...I wanted the real thing!) I remember going to White Castle at 3am when I was pregnant with my first son! I also remember going through Burger King with my 2nd son.... ordering, eating, throwing up in the parking lot and then going through the drive-thru again because I was still hungry! lol
    Have a great week

  46. Mello Yello, hot dogs and dirt. No I never ate any dirt, gross! But I couldn't take prenatal vitamins if I wanted any food to stay down. I stopped craving dirt when I went to a quadruple dose of Flintstones childrens' vitamins with iron via my OB's instructions. And you'd think that Magnolia eating all that kraut would make me a kraut lover. YUCK!! It didn't. I can't stand to smell, look at or eat it. I agree with her though, sounds like your body is craving calcium. Glad things are going smoothly. God Bless!!

  47. In addition to craving foods, I do remember having to avoid foods that made me very queasy in the early stages of pregnancy. With baby #1 I couldn't stand to eat fried foods or to be in a place that smelled greasy. The only thing I could stand to eat was cottage cheese. With baby #2 I did crave milkshakes and White Castle hamburgers. Normally, I don't go near them. During the first and second trimesters, though, I couldn't stand to even smell Chinese food, and I LOVE Chinese food as a rule. With baby #3 I had no cravings at all, and I was so sick in the early weeks of the pregnancy that the only thing I could keep down was raspberry-flavored seltzer water. With my 4th and final baby (my only boy), I just ate normally the whole pregnancy. There were no cravings and very little queasiness.

  48. With my boys, I wanted green olives which I normally dislike. My last two daughters were the grilled cheese and cream of tomato soup" pregnancies. We ate it everyday for lunch. Six years later, my older children still won't eat grilled cheese or cream of tomato soup.

  49. With my 1st, I didn't really have cravings other than one night when I really needed a hot fudge sundae. With my second, I could not get enough fruit. He is a bit of a frugavore.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I craved Cheerios and ice cream (not at the same time, LOL) When my daughter was old enough to eat "table" food, she loved Cheerios! :D

    ReplyDelete
  51. It was so much fun reading all your comments about your cravings! I also find that I crave something different with each pregnancy. Funny how that works.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anchovies and sardines slathered in warm peanut butter. Though since I'm no longer pregnant you could hardly pay me enough money to try to eat that!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I didn't think I had any cravings with #1, but then one day chocolate and I became best friends :-) I still love it but not like I did when I was preggo... with all 3 boys. I also craved salty things and with #3, bacon cheeseburgers from Burger King (not now!!!!) No morning sickness with #1 or #2 but I had an aversion to potato chips (all 3 times. ) #3 was the most interesting. No morning sickness BUT after 4pm, all desire for food left and I could not look at raw meat at any time which made it difficult to go shopping and cook. I got so I could pick out meat without looking at it. Bill would have to cook it for me! Once it was cooked, it was fine, but we had to eat before 4.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I craved a few things, but the main thing that made my mouth water was.....ice. I would crunch ice all day long if I could. I would take ice cubes and crush it and to me it was the most delicious thing on earth! Weird right? Great post. Blessings, Joanne

  55. A huge congratulations! I guess I missed an earlier post in which you announced this?

I don't remember ongoing cravings, but I do remember sending David on a mission one Sunday morning in March to find local maple syrup when we lived in Vermont. I wanted pancakes with fresh maple syrup in the worst way. He told someon, "I don't question these things -- I just do what I'm told." Smart man!

  56. mashed potatoes and gravy with baby one, green olives with fudge cycles for all of them, and cheese puffs with orange soda only with my twins.

    ReplyDelete
  57. With the first it was chocolate ice cream & potato chips, usually after going to bed. I honestly don't remember craving anything with the last two.

  58. Hello - I am so glad to discover your blog. My craving with my son was to have a sandwich made up of well-buttered bread and hot boiled but well-drained spinach! With my daughter it was sandwiches made from pickled onions - the sharper the vinegar, the better.
