Buddy

We all really liked our horse, Buddy. He was a Standard bred, coal black, with a white star on his forehead and four white socks. He seemed to really enjoy pulling our little buggy and I enjoyed driving him as well.

He had only one fault, if you can call it that. He absolutely loved our children and did everything he could to be with them. He would painstakingly use his teeth to unlatch the gate to his field and several times a week I would look out the window to see him standing next to the sandbox or swing where the children were playing, just watching them. He seemed to have a special interest in the sandbox and would lower his head and watch intently as they dug ponds and built castles.

I would go out and he always let me hold his halter to lead him back to his pasture where he would then stand at the gate and look longingly into the yard. I always felt a little sorry for him when I put him back to his pasture since he really wasn't doing any harm in the yard and he was so gentle and the children always enjoyed when he came to visit them.

  1. Sounds as if Buddy thought he was a pet...or a babysitter! Maybe he wished he was a child who could build sand castles too!

  4. What a great story! I'd love a horse like that. A friend of mine has a horse that's battle trained. He's used for re-enactments of 18th century battles and is so gentle. He'll fall asleep in the battle field while cannons and muskets are firing all around him!

  6. I have a question, we have lots of Amish in our part of the world and I always wondered why they never used a stockier horse for pulling their buggies? Their horses always seem to look so skinny and bony.

  9. We had a pony that could unlock the gate with his teeth and lips. I'm so glad to hear of another horse who did the same because when I've told that story people look like they don't believe me.

Your horse sounds as though he was tempered like your whole family. Sweet and easy going. :)

  10. I used to know a horse with talented lips like that - only he would go and let all the other horses out so he'd have someone to play with. Maybe you should have moved the sandbox into his paddock!

  11. That is so sweet! Sound like Buddy thought he was a dog instead of a horse wanting to following the children around as they played.

  16. Thanks for the smile today, when reading this post it brought back memories of the horses we boarded on our farm. They are like pets and they each have a different personality. We only had one stubborn one that we had to watch for but his owner was the same, so we know he came by it naturally.

  17. Aww, he thought he was human:) Horses like that make you want to bring them in and serve them tea, lol. My horse was sweet, too. I used to go out in the field and lay on her back while she grazed. She was rather devilish when she figured out how to get to Mum's garden, though.
