Curling up in my favorite spot to read I was soon transported to the rolling hills of Lancaster where Lainey O'Toole and Bess Reihl both spend the summer in Stoney Ridge. Bess to spend her summer with Mammi, her grandmother who was quite a character and fast became one of my favorites.
I loved how this book really drew me into the story, I was laughing and crying all my way through. It's hands down, the best Amish fiction I have ever read and I really enjoyed it.
I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a heartwarming, touching book to read.
No one asked me to do a review. I simply wanted to share a great read and hope that you will read and enjoy it too.

ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this. I have seen the book in the store but because I have 4 others waiting for me to read them (Amish fiction) I haven't picked it up. I am a little disappointed with these, find them a bit dull. Please do let us know what YOU find authentic and engrossing??

ReplyDeleteThe timing here is perfect for me, I am so close to finishing the Amish fiction book I brought on vacation and so want to begin another. Fisher is a new author for me, thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteBeverly Lewis also writes some very nice fiction with an Amish theme. I just finished all 3 books in her "Annie's People" series: The Preacher's Daughter, The Englisher, and The Bretheran. Wonderful books, that I would certainly recommend. I will look for The Search. I am now reading a series of books about a young law student who comes from a faith-based home (not Amish), and maintains her values as she finds her way in the world. The series is called Tides of Truth, by Robert Whitlow. The 1st book in the series is Deeper Water. It is wonderful.

ReplyDeleteMary Ann, the cover of this book (about which you've made me very curious!) reminds me of a question I'd like to ask regarding plain dress: I realize that all the different communities have different standards and styles, but if you were visiting your relations in one community - for more than a social visit, say you were staying there over the summer with a specific job to do such as helping a new mother or an injured person - would you need to conform to that community's standard of dress?
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned in one post that you didn't like the Mennonite-style capes, I think (I'm still not sure I understand the way the dresses and accessories work together!), so I'm guessing that you've had to adapt, or did things have to change as you relocated?

Dear Joyful, I bought the first of this series based on other people's opinions and except for a just a few things, enjoyed her book. I like her free style and how she writes humor into it ... she doesn't appear to be tied down to a certain way of writing and that was refreshing. There seem to be a LOT of authors writing "Amish" fiction and I decided a long time ago not to try to read them all because many of them, at a glance, seemed rather trite. Since I enjoyed the first book, I will go ahead and buy the 2nd and 3rd based on your recommendation :-) I still enjoy your writing more than their's and truly hope you write your own book some day!

It's nice to know when you approve of an Amish fiction book because then I know that the author has created an authentic background. Having been Amish yourself, you know if a book "has it right." I went to order this book and realized that it is number 3 in a series, so I decided to order "The Choice" first and read the series in order. I just finished "The Choice" and enjoyed it so very much. I can't wait to read the other 2 books.
Suzanne - if you read this - It was a great book !
