One of the perks of having a blog is that you get to meet many great people that you never would otherwise. One such friend is author Suzanne Woods Fisher.
Recently I received a package in the mail from her. Since I have a weakness for packages I laid aside what I was doing at the moment and opened it. Inside I found one of her latest books, "Amish Peace" After flipping through it a little I started reading bits and pieces and before I knew it I had read the whole book. I found it to be very interesting as each chapter was a short story of either memories Amish people had shared or interviews they had done. At the end of each chapter were a few questions to ask yourself that I found quite thought provoking.
As I laid the book aside I felt acutely reminded what all we sacrificed when we left our comfortable little world in an Amish community. Though we don't even consider returning I was glad to find a book that shows some of the qualities I admire and miss from the Amish culture.
Suzanne did not ask me to review her book, but I wanted to share with all of you that I had finally found a book about the Amish that I actually enjoyed reading.

Thanks for sharing this book title. I'll have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI must look though your past posts to find out your story about why and how you left the Amish community. I'm sure it was quite a story.
Have a lovely weekend.
I actually got this book for my mom for Christmas and she's really enjoyed it so far. We used to joke about wanting to join the Amish because we were fed up with the hectic business of "fancy" life, but of course we never actually seriously considered it, so I thought the book was the perfect compromise. :) I haven't read it yet so it's good to know you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. I will have to look for that one.
ReplyDeleteuntil next time... nel
Oh yes~I had a friend just send this book to me. I have also so enjoyed reading it!
ReplyDeleteI saw this book and wondered how it was. Thanks so much for the insight!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Karen

Mel

Can't wait to read this book! Hopefully our library will have it!
ReplyDeleteIts always nice to receive gifts and I'm glad you enjoyed yours, that was very thoughtful :o)
ReplyDeleteI received this book for Christmas from my sister. Just need to set aside some time to read. Thanks for the review - makes me even more excited for some reading time :) -Tammy
ReplyDeleteThank you. This definitely sounds like something I want to read.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a must read to me. Hopefully our small town Library has it. If not I'll have to order it. Have a wonderful weekend
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning this book, I love to read. I will check it out.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever read anything by Beverly Lewis? Her books are fiction, but many are about Amish families. I read one series I really enjoyed.
Thanks again :)
Sounds like a wonderful book.
ReplyDeleteLike so many others, I'm going to have to check our library to see if they have it. Sounds like a very interesting book.
ReplyDeleteOh! I have heard of this book! I think my mother saw it somewhere and told me about it. Now I'll have to see if I can find it and read it. I used to think I had to join the Amish or some other similar group to have that peace, or that lifestyle, however one wants to call it. Then I realized that I don't have to. I just have to work towards it in my own home.
ReplyDeleteI remember thinking once, "I wish I had a big ol' garden and was free to can and put it all away in a pantry." Then I realized that that is what I do! Not to the extent of many Amish women, but I do have a decent sized garden. I do can (and freeze and dry).
One thing I do wish I had that it seems many Amish women have is the sisterly support system. I have one, but it's broken up and hindered at times because many of the women have careers or jobs outside the home and cannot be of assistance when I need them all the time.
That looks a most interesting book. I'd love to read it.
ReplyDeleteI think differently of Amish fiction after I read your post a while back. But I would like to find this book; thanks for the recommendation.
ReplyDeleteThanks for recommending this book I'll be sure to check it out...

ReplyDeleteMarnie
I just pick up a new book this week as a gift for my sister. I can't remember the title at this moment, but it's an Amish (fiction) book. Our favorite author is Beverly Lewis, but this was a new author I hadn't heard of or read before.
ReplyDeleteYour book sounds interesting. I'll have to look it up. Thanks for sharing!
The book sounds like a great read! Thank you for sharing your review.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by my blog Heaven's Gate......it is such a pleasure to meet you ...I am sure to visit often as I am following you now....this looks like a wonderful book...thanks so much for sharing it....blessings....
ReplyDeleteThank you for the review. I'll be buying it for my husband. We have many Amish who live in our area and want to learn more about their ways. Your blog is fascinating.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment on my blog. We also grew up in a Amish community, though we were never amish, we did live like them for awhile. I wonder why you left them? Blessings to you.
ReplyDeleteI have just finished reading this wonderful book, and would definitely recommend it.
ReplyDeleteI do love reading your blog.
Blessings to you and your family.
Melissa
This book absolutely changed my life!!! Suzanne Woods Fisher is a God send!!! While I am not amish, I grew up with them being my neighbors and friends. This book is beautifully and accurately written! Tis Vunderful Goot as we would say here in PA!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed this book. Now I'm curious as to which ones you didn't like! Are they not too realistic?
ReplyDeleteI remember when you had a tiny handful of followers. Now, look! Everyone is flocking to your blog because of the way you present your stories of being Amish -- your blog is like a book being written and shared vignette by vignette!
ReplyDeleteI truly enjoyed that book and she also has a new fictional book called The Choice that is well written also.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! It is so nice to meet you. I love your blog. It is so peaceful and I would like to read that book.
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you,
Lee Ann
Just like LeeAnn above, I am here to say thanks for visiting my blog. I like this post about the Amish book. In the past few years, we have had several Amish families move into our community here in northern Maine and they have been a blessing to us :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband and mom grew up in Ohio and PA, we have some Amish cookbooks and I enjoy doing Amish Cross Stitch by Diane Graebner. One that I did hangs by my bed and so simple and sweet. Thanks for stopping by my blog. How fun to get a gift and a book. Enjoy a happy Saturday! Hugs to you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog, I am honored you came. How interesting your life has been....I've always wanted to sit down and have a conversation with someone who is Amish. That life seems so honest and simplistic, I love it. :) I think the hustle and bustle of this life can be too much at times and I long for more simplistic ways........I can't wait to read more of you blog and find out more about the lifestyle I have always been so curious about. (and to see why you left it lol) :) Have a blessed day! :)
ReplyDeleteG'day sweet friend ~ I will have to look for a copy of this book ... TY for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful weekend.
Hugs, Marydon
I enjoyed looking over your blog
ReplyDeleteI look forward to following you

God bless you and your family, Ron
Thanks for the very interstin' review. I'll have to put this one on my reading list.
ReplyDeleteGod bless ya'll and have a glorious day!!!
I will be getting this book..Thanks for sharing it..
ReplyDeleteHhhhhhhh!!!!.... that was my audible gasp! I read the author's name then looked over to the left of the screen and see it again under yours on those darling books in the margin... You see it's nearly 2015, but I'm reading this blog from the beginning... so it's just 2010... Having this little piece of information is,,, kind of like being psychic or being a time traveler... very weird... glad I'm not either! But I'm very glad I'm the odd kind of person who actually likes to know the end of a story as I'm reading it... I can't wait to watch this unfold!
ReplyDeleteH
Helen, I have just started reading too, catching up...It's 2016 now :)
DeleteI'm just reading now to try and catch up also. Although now it's March 2017.
