Random Thoughts

I was browsing through some of my cookbooks to try and get inspired to make a nice dinner tonight. I stumbled across some meatloaf recipes which reminded me of the time my husband and I went to a restaurant soon after we were married and got seated next to a table where a very noisy group of women were sitting. We couldn't help but overhearing their conversation. I have forgotten most of it by now but the one part will probably stick with me for the rest of my life.

This one woman was telling the rest of this wonderful meatloaf she had invented the previous evening. She started with a pound of hamburger and added spices (which I can't remember) then added a pound of butter and a can of Coca-Cola!

We never tried it but it is one recipe that sticks with us, and every once in a while we pull it out of our memory files for another good chuckle. So if you were that woman in Perkins ten years ago trying to impress your friends with the your meatloaf invention. Thank-you we would not remember that evening if it had not been for you.

I have to smile every time I see this picture of my husbands brothers. I can't believe the hats they used to have to wear. And the expressions on their faces...............

Being a Mom is hard work. Recently Sailor came running into the house all dirty and sweaty after being in the woods for several hours. He was all excited as he told me how he discovered a gold mine out in our little patch of woods.

He told me how deep the hole is that he dug and now he needs something to put the gold dust into.

What could I do? There was no way I could make myself dash his dreams and joy by saying there is no gold there. So I handed him a paper bag and a Gatorade instead and let him go back out in the heat to dig a worthless hole in the woods. And later admired the handful of dirt that twinkled every so slightly if the light hit it just right.

  1. Hey there! I'm just doing some "catch-up" and I loved the story about your new house - those colors sound so...special! ha ha It does sound like a neat place though with the big trees and the abandoned house next door - how fun is that!? And I'm glad you made friends at your new school - I knew you would for sure.

That picture is a crack up of your brother-in-laws! Who's the naughty one taking the pictures?? That's a treasure. By the way, I sure could go for a Coke and butter meatloaf right about now - YEAH RIGHT!! You should google that and see if there is such a thing. Have a good day ~ ♥

  3. Little boys and the things they get into, just precious!!! I've found rocks that sparkle in the sun, maybe they are diamonds! They are a sight to see nonetheless.

Cute picture of your brother in laws!

I wonder if that was Paula Deen you happened to over hear about the butter and coke in meatload! hahaha If you don't know who Paula is, she is a cook on HGTV and she LOVES butter!!!! I could see her doing that! lol

Today was the first day of school for my daughter. It wasn't as bad as she had thought. I'm relieved!

    Hugs,
    Angela

  9. We do what we need to with those little ones. Just this afternoon I tried to "catch" minnows with a sharp shooter (smaller than a shovel) with my four yr. old grandson. We did not have a net. Wasn't a problem for him at all.

We proceeded to find/catch a dead one. He just had to take it home to show momma, so we put it in a baggy! Don't you know she was thrilled.

Then we took a bath and made cookies!

  10. That's the unhealthiest, but most memorable, meat loaf recipe I ever heard.
Cute hats the brothers are wearing.
I would have let my son dig his hole and collect his "gold dust", too. A little kid is just as happy with a few sparkles as he would be with real gold!

  11. That meatloaf recipe sounds nasty! But I never make meatloaf because my hubby doesn't like it!

    Those boys are adorable!

  12. First of all that meatloaf recipe sounds more like the recipe for a heart attack!!

You are a great mom - Forever Sailer will know that he discovered gold in the woods and that is precious!

  13. I love that he can just run out to the woods and dig. THAT's the way it ought to be for boys. I lament my city, landlocked life but it's where God has planted us so I have to be careful over too much lamenting. But TWM used to say when he was Sailor's age, "I just want a place where me and JoJo - the dog - can run as far as I want and you don't have to watch me." :( We could travel to places where he could do that but nowhere nearby. I'm with you....how could you dash Sailor's dreams? You're a good mama! :) And you're a good mama for not making him meatloaf with a pound of butter and coca-cola! lol

  16. I just found your blog via your comment on Gloria's. I am fascinated with the Mennonite/Amish culture since I have visited a (more open) Mennonite community here in the countryside of Bolivia. My church here continually ministers there and it's been awesome to watch the Lord work!

    Blessings!
