LV’s parents had moved a little over a year before we made plans to go visit them in their new home. We hired a driver and made arrangements for my brothers to come take care of our farm and all the animals while we were gone.
It would be the first time they would be seeing Sailor. I was still a little intimidated at the thought of spending a week with them. LV’s family had always had the best of everything, while my family had always tried making do with what we had. And as much as I tried I couldn’t quite feel comfortable around them.
After twenty hours on the road we arrived at their home to a warm welcome. The days passed swiftly and one evening they invited all their married children over for dinner before we left for home again.
The house was filled with noisy fun while we prepared dinner. Once everyone was gathered around the table the visiting continued as we ate the main course.
Once we were done his mother brought cherry and blueberry pie out for dessert. I watched in amazement as they passed the pie and LV and his brothers calmly spooned leftover lukewarm beef gravy over their pie and ate it as if it were delicious.
It was almost a relief to discover that every family has it’s quirks and eating gravy with pie certainly fell in that category. I remembered the time I had been so embarrassed when Daddy had offered to eat the fat from LV’s steak, and realized it really wasn’t all that bad.
And someday Rosy and Sunbeam could very well be mortified when their Daddy offers their friends gravy for their pie.
I can't imagine those flavors going together very well, but I probably won't try it out either, lol. Another interesting story! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI have seen some odd combos my kids have come up with like peanut butter on tortilla chips... but I wonder how the gravy on pie started!? Every family does have its quirks for sure.
ReplyDeleteI found your blog 2 days ago and have been glued to the computer since. Thank you for taking the time to share your life with us. Can't wait to read more about your family!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of that combination, but you are right every family has something they do that's unique to just them. Thanks for sharing. Blessings, Joanne
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of that one. All families are different, though and ours is no exception. I like that.
ReplyDeleteBe blessed!

Our families quirk (if you will) is eating cottage cheese on baked beans:)
ReplyDelete~~HUGS~~
We like leftover enchiladas for breakfast. I wonder if that is quirky.
ReplyDeletethank you for visiting my blog :-) Yours is lovely!! I hope you will visit again soon :-)
ReplyDeleteI cant think that it would taste good....but everyone to his own!
ReplyDeleteMy hubby sometimes put cinnamon and sugar on top of pizza.
ReplyDeletequirky as in...
ReplyDeleteapplesause on top of pizza?
or, pickled beets in the same bowl as potato pie covered in milk?
or, broiled scrapple with both ketchup and applebutter?
Interesting food combo - just read recently about Amish sweet peanut butter, on a sandwich with bologna, cheese and pickle - now that's brave!!! Have to ask - are your children's names on the blog their real names, or nicknames for blog purposes?
ReplyDeleteMy uncle would fill up his plate with everything including his dessert than pour gravy over the whole thing. I never thought it was appetizing. In-laws can bring some interesting events into our lives and some quirks.
ReplyDeleteLol! I can't imagine, gravy on pie.. I guess we all do things like that. My husband still shudders when he sees me and my family put crushed canned tomatoes on top of our biscuits and gravy, with lots of black pepper.
ReplyDeleteNow I want breakfast again.
Hi there. My name is Margret and I've spent the last 3 Friday afternoons at work, reading your blog from start til now. I've SO enjoyed every moment of it. Your writing style is so comfortable and entertaining it has made the time fly. I just wanted to say hello and thank you.
ReplyDeleteAnd in the family weirdness department---how about one of my father's favorite sandwiches---ketchup and cottage cheese with black pepper sprinkled on it. I tried it. Ewwww!
ReplyDeleteThat's different!
ReplyDeleteSpoils the pie in my opinion, but to each their own! ;)
Gravy on pie does sound a bit strange. I've never heard of that before. But who knows crazier things have tasted good.
ReplyDeleteOur family quirk: Liver and onions (and my mom makes it incredible). On the side: mashed potatoes and peas, but we scoop a hollow in the mashed potatoes and put the peas in it.
ReplyDeleteWow, that certainly is different. I thought my grandfather put cream and sugar on his tomato and eating it for dessert was different. But that is what makes the world go around. It keeps life interesting...and it's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog and look forward to getting to know you.
Blessings,
Connie
Peg, her children's names on the blog are fictitious. Go back to the post on April 9. 2009 and read the background to each choice of blog name. Fascinating.
ReplyDeleteAm really enjoying reading your blog, though I feel picked up in the middle ... You write well!
ReplyDeleteGravy on pie sounds pretty quirky to me, too!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a childhood dare that the brothers thought up, and made some sort of brotherly pact, lol!
ReplyDeleteGravy and pie is definitely unusual, but I guess it's all in what you're used to.
ReplyDeleteI served apple pie with gravy at our diner when I was a teenager to a regular customer. I just stared at him the first time I waited on him. He laughed and told me "Really! That's how I like it!" My dad was cooking and I had to take the slice to him for the gravy. He just nodded his head as if this was a normal thing... HAHAHA!!!
ReplyDeleteI like Heidi Pocketbook's comment :-)
Mine is mayonnaise, and cheddar cheese on canned pears. No bread though. I love catching back up with your blog, its like chocolates, yummy and addictive.
