Wednesday Hodgepodge

1.  Do you think the pandemic has had any kind of positive impact on your mental health? Explain.

It has helped me step away from social media, which I consider a positive thing. Facebook has become a tense, ugly place that I no longer find enjoyable. I unfollowed and snoozed a lot of people, but even after doing that I only spend a few minutes a day on there to see if my favorite people posted anything and check what's happening in the groups I like the best. I still make posts there every once in a while, mostly about happenings around the house that amused me, or a picture or two of what we've been up to.
Instagram, though much happier than Facebook, only gets a glance or two occasionally.

2. A hot mess, hot under the collar, in hot water, hot button, hot diggity dog!, hot shot, hot seat....choose one and tell us how it applies to your life currently.

A hot mess ... well, I'm hoping we're this side of the hot mess, but yesterday we were in the thick of it where everything seemed to go wrong. Scary things, frustrating things, and simply annoying. Hot mess summed the day up nicely.

3. Speaking of the hot seat, do you work well under pressure or do you actively avoid high pressure situations?

It depends on what I'm doing. Certain deadlines make me focus and get things done. But other things such as cooking for guests while they are in the kitchen watching turns me into a bumbling, scatter brained, forget simple things, version of a cook. I love cooking, and enjoy having people over, but I prefer to have most of the food prepared before they get here.

4. Hotdogs-yay or nay? If you said yay how do you like yours? Did you know July is National hotdog month?

I like the occasional hot dog. I prefer mine with a slice of cheese and topped with sour cream. I had not known that July is National hotdog month, but now that I do I may have to find a way to celebrate. That could be a lot of fun!

5. I read here a list of America's coolest Southern towns. They are Marfa Texas, Greenville South Carolina, Abindgon Virginia, Athens Georgia, Bentonville Arkansas, Florence Alabama, Oxford Mississippi, Abita Springs Louisiana, Wilmington North Carolina, Monroeville Alabama, McMinnville Tennessee, Natchez Mississippi.  How many on the list have you seen in person? Which town on the list would you most like to see?

I haven't been to any of those towns, but I wouldn't mind getting to explore Wilmington, North Carolina.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

The sound of mourning doves cooing, especially during a dry spell, is one of the prettiest sounds of summer to me.

  1. Well I just stepped outside earlier to hear the mourning doves. They were the only sound out there. I have never had cheese or sour cream on a hot dog. Hmmm. BTW Instagram is a kind and friendly place, not at all like what I hear about Facebook.

  2. I am with you on the social media. I have been staying away from facebook but do still enjoy Instagram. Although, I only look at peoples picture feeds and not the stories.

  4. Abingdon, Virginia! What a charming small town! In fact, I lived there two years; 1963-1965; still visit friends there. I have never been part of the Facebook crowd, but have a lovely group of friends on Twitter and Instagram; have found them to be most helpful during these uncertain days. I’ll soon find myself in a “hot spot” if I am unable to complete a responsibility by this weekend’s deadline! Yikes!

  5. I have been posting little on facebook and mainly go on to check out birthdays etc.
It's just plain HOT here with almost 100 yesterday. We're not used to it in the pacefic northwest. At least it cols off at night.
I do NOT like high stress situations.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. 1 - I think we can choose to find positive in anything. For me, it's more time with my family so that is good.

    5. This is bad but I had to look some of these towns up because I couldn't remember if I'd been to them.
I think I may have driven through Greenville? I've been to Asheville & the Biltmore just north of Greenville.
I've been through Abingdon, Va many times & would love to spend a nice vacation there.
Athens, Ga has been on my list....I almost made it once when I went to Helen & Taccoa just north of Athens.
I live about 25 miles west of Bentonville, AR & love the town. I've been there more times than I can count.
And I've circled McMinnville many times going through the state of TN but never had time to get off the track as I went by.

  7. The sound of Morning Doves is such a sweet, welcome sound in my back yard. They love my birdbath and I so enjoy watching them take a splashing bath.

  8. Apart from my blog I don't bother with social media either.

  9. Your idea to step away from social media is so smart. I signed up for Instagram for the 3rd time, and deleted my account a week later. I've avoided Facebook from the beginning. It's too much drama for me, and I get sucked in every time. I've never tried a hot dog with cheese and sour cream. That sounds GOOD.

Our summer goals are quite similar. I've been making digital materials for my class, too. Your spiral review looks great, and your training sounds really good. Our district has been doing writing workshop for a few years, but we wrote our own curriculum. We've been doing reading workshop for a couple years (and we wrote our own curriculum). I'm reading The Reading Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo, and it really is as good as everyone says. I bet you're enjoying your pool in this heat.

  10. I am so with you on Facebook. And I'm finding the political posting and conflict is infiltrating Instagram now too. ugh. I'm pretty much just linking up my blog and sending birthday wishes on social media these days. It's better for my peace of mind. Have a great day!

  11. We have never been on Facebook, for all of the reasons you list. South Carolina Granddaughter and Virginia Daughter are both on Instagram, and I enjoy looking at their photos, but other than my own blog, I don't get involved in too much social media.

It has been hot in Maryland - hovering around 90 during the day, and "cooling off" to the upper 70s and low 80s at night. I was chatting with a friend, discussing whether we'd rather do without indoor plumbing or air-conditioning. I've lived without both, and would keep my a/c and forgo the plumbing!

  12. I love hearing the sounds of most birds.
