Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. How did you welcome the month of July, and tell us one fun thing you did to celebrate the 4th. (or the weekend for any non-USA residents playing along today)

We welcomed the month of July with LV using a few of his vacation days to stay at home to work on a project he has going. We did nothing fun on the 4th. LV had to head back to work, and the rest of us started the monumental task of going through everything we own, to do some serious downsizing. It's a bit ridiculous how attached I am to a lot of things, so it's making the task hard.

2. Right now ... what's your favorite red thing? white thing? blue thing?

My favorite red thing ..... strawberries. I think there are still a few in the refrigerator.
White thing ..... the quilt on our bed. Such a welcome sight after an exhausting day.
Blue thing .... the beautiful blue skies we've been having.

3. Wave the white flag, raise a red flag, fly your freak flag...which 'flag' have you flown most recently? Explain.

The white flag ..... I suppose, in a sense at least. Life has been interesting, and rather than fighting against it, I've been waving the white flag and trying to go with what ever happens.

4. According to Cond Nast Traveler these are the seven best places to visit in July-

a boat safari in Botswanna's Okavango Delta, Riviera Maya Mexico (it's whale shark season and apparently you can swim with them), Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, Pamploma Spain, St. Petersburg Russia, the Fuji Rock Festival at Mount Naeba Japan, the Salzburg Festival in Salzburg Austria

If time and money weren't factors would you want to see any/all of these? Which would you most like to see and why?

I prefer to stay within the borders of the U.S. so the only one on the list for me is Yellowstone and the Grand Teton.

5. Grilled cheese, pimento cheese, or mac and cheese...your favorite from the cheesy treats listed?

I love all three, but the grilled cheese is sounding the best right now. So many yummy ways to fix one.

6. What makes you sweat?

Literally ... heat and humidity.

Figuratively .... the thought of public speaking. Seeing LV and Sailor doing something a bit dangerous. Might I just say I'm not a fan of watching heavy equipment being operated.

7. Your favorite movie with a 'patriotic' theme of some sort?

I don't have one.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

What's up with mosquitoes and their love of snacking on me? Last night LV and I were outside for a while and I was nearly eaten alive, while he didn't get a single bite. Not fair!

  1. I read something recently where people of certain blood types are more prone to bites. It does seem they like some people better than others. Good luck with the downsizing!

    1. I've heard the blood type thing too, but haven't really seen it proven so far.

  2. My Child-Bride Suzanne gets all the bites. I can stand next to her in our yard and get bit but she will be covered from head to toe. We tried everything. We sell Avon and tried Skin So Soft and it did not help her. It got rid of them completely for me.

    1. Mosquitoes are so annoying! Sorry to hear your wife has trouble with them too.

  3. Regarding mosquitoes and their snacking habits, I believe that it is related to blood types, too. I am doing a poll, of sorts, regarding it. Is your blood type O+? Mine is and I am forever getting chomped by the little creatures. They sometimes bite David, but it's like they see me coming and send out the "here's the buffet" alarm. :) I am covered with mosquito bites right now.

I'm working, slowly but surely, on downsizing our stuff, too. It is hard work, especially when maybe you don't *need* something anymore, nothing to justify keeping it, but you don't want to get rid of it either. Best wishes to you on that project.

    Have a blessed day!

  4. UGH! Downsizing is such a chore. We just reduced by about 30% prior to our move in May. Even after unloading a lot, we are still having an issue with storage space at the new house. We had to rent a storage space down the road. Good luck with your purge, I know what you are going through.
    Cheers,

    1. It's so hard. Especially when the items you have to part with are useful, sometimes sentimental, but you simply don't have space for them. I facing the challenge on deciding between which things I need the most.

  5. I am in the process of downsizing because we are moving again! Hubs loves these kinds of projects. I have heard if you take a bounce dryer sheet and rub it on your arms and legs one will not get bitten by mosquitoes-haven't tried this, though.

    1. I wish moving wasn't so hard! It makes me tired just thinking of it.

I'll have to give Bounce sheets a try. I used to use onion tops, but since I don't have a garden that's not an option.

  6. Downsizing. Ugh. We are not moving and our house would be a shoe box if we went any smaller, but I was raised in a family of collectors so I like my stuff, too. There is just too much of it crammed into our house these days. It got a bit better when our daughter moved out and freed up a room last month, but I am still trying to sort through it all and part with some of it. I'm not doing very well. LOL

    1. Having too many things makes me feel claustrophobic, but getting rid of things isn't fun either.

  7. I think mosquitoes like a certain blood type and it is probably O+, which is mine. I just bought an essential oil blend to try and keeping lemonbalm plants on my deck has helped keep them away. Downsizing is always such a chore. I hope you got a lot accomplished.

    1. I've heard a lot of positive things about essential oils, but have never tried them.

  8. You must be very tasty. I hate getting bitten so I hope your bites are not too irritating. Getting rid of stuff is not an easy task. I hope things go to plan.

    1. I'm doing my best today not to focus on the bites I received, even though they're itching badly.

  9. Yes... "dejunking" as we like to call it. I'm working my way through all the stuff we've collected too. It's not fun, but it's SO freeing when you get rid of a bunch of stuff!
Mosquitoes... They like me too, and I'm O-. Maybe it's an "O" thing? My mom is B-; mosquitoes avoided her. My dad was O- also; they ate him alive. Hmmm, my husband is A+, and I'm not sure that he gets fewer bites than me? Everyone in a while I read something silly about how eating sugar is what attracts mosquitoes, but I've never fed sugar to animals and they'll have a cloud of mosquitoes around them, so... : )

    1. I don't eat much sugar at all, so I don't think that's what attracted them to me.

  10. You know, there just might be something to that O+ thing...the skeeters seem to like me a lot too! :(

    1. Sorry that those mosquitoes bother you too. Miserable little things!

  11. I'm one of those people that gets eaten alive by mosquitoes too and my husband very, very rarely gets bitten. Thank goodness we don't have very many mosquitoes up here in the mountains of Washington. When we lived in Nebraska I was always covered with bites in the summertime.

I've been trying to get rid of some things to, but I have an unreasonable sentimental attachment to way too many things.

  12. My mum died in 2011, and we are still going through her stuff. I have made a solemn oath that I will not leave that sort of mess for our kids to deal with, so The Squire and I have been sorting. I've gotten rid of scads of books, and old pictures.
The kitchen is next. Nobody needs two bread knives and six butcher knives! Two ice cream scoops, and on and on.

    1. You're right ... why do we need so many things? I think I'll like it fine once I'm through purging extras. The process just hurts a little. :(
