My experience of being Amish for close to 30 years is that Amish refuse hugs from anyone other than their spouse, and even that wouldn't happen in public. But I can't make blanket statements about every Amish community or person.
However when this months issue of the Amish published Family Life arrived in the mail I found it interesting that they addressed the very question I had received.

ReplyDeleteOur three children all live far away. One in Montana, one in the Washington DC area and one in Japan. We miss them every single day which I why I always tell Mom's to cherish each day they have with their children.

The last of our children is getting ready to leave home and I can't figure out how to only cook for two. Glad some are close enough to visit often.
ReplyDeleteMy Amish friend and I hug when we part ways after a visit. Her brother always shakes my hand. One thing interesting about me is that I love ringing handbells and used to direct our church bell choir.

We have made friends with a group of Amish in IN and they will hug us but it doesn't necessarily seem natural to them. I am trying to think if I have seen them hug each other or if it is only us English doing it. 😀

I lived in the Shipshewana area. Moved here after my husband lost his job of 39 years. Have one daughter. Her and her hubby have had 20 biological children. There are 15 living. I go to garage sales around here and buy magazines that the Amish are selling, used. I have not seen this magazine but would love it.

ReplyDeleteI wish I had Amish friends or Amish neighbors. My late Aunt who lived in Lancaster County had Amish friends and she brought me along to visit one family when I was visiting as a child.

As of July 2nd I have 6 grandchildren: 7, 6, 5, 21 months, 6 months, and 10 days old (who now weighs 3# .03 oz) born at 29 weeks. As you can see, God has blessed us. ReplyDeleteWe weren't Amish, but growing up we weren't big on hugs. It wasn't until I was in my 30's that I began to hug and receive hugs. Sometimes I am still uncomfortable hugging other men. Also, I am tall and sometimes hugs are awkward with other ladies. Weird, I know.

ReplyDeleteI love bird watching and we now live in the desert southwest where we have so many species of hummingbirds. If I put my hands around the nectar feeder and stand quietly, the birds are bold enough to perch on my fingers as they drink the sugar water. It is always a wonder to me that something so tiny is so brave.

ReplyDeleteI can't think of too much interesting about my self. Unlike a lot of ladies I know, I do not like working outside, therefore I love rainy days, I don't have to feel guilty staying indoors! I used to read Family Life years ago. Would love to read it again.
ReplyDeleteI am really excited for fall and then winter. It is so nice to have the cool air come in while the woodstove is going. This is not about me but my 82 year old grandma still sleeps with her window open in the winter... maybe it runs in the family?

I am retired, and other than helping with my grandchildren, my ministry opportunities are related to co-teaching an ESL class at church, a ladies' teaching ministry, and grading Bible lessons for prisoners. I enjoy these very much. But in personal life, I also look forward to fall, my favorite season, when the humidity and temperature are both lower. The dog days of summer are my least favorite time of year though I enjoy my garden and growing things very much. And I love rainy days. Coming from a farm-based family, we were used to working at any opportunity, so winter, when the outside is less demanding, and rainy days, when it is impossible, are prized and excuse for doing what I want.

We rescued him 9 years ago and he weighed 28 pounds. Today he tips the scale at 91 pounds! He eats only when the sun is shining and hibernates in the winter.

ReplyDeleteLindz, I've always (well, almost always) slept with the window open. The boarding school I attended insisted we have the windows open at night, all year round.
ReplyDeleteI teach about life in the 1700s, and when I am in costume people will ask me if I'm Amish - flowered skirts, lace sleeves and all!
The only interesting thing about me is that I used to play a harp. The Squire, bless him, says I am still always harping on something!
Interesting fact about me.... When I was younger I used to love climbing, but now I have an unreasonable fear of heights. I have no idea what happened to change that.
