Amish Q & A

Do Amish courting couples ever breakup? Or does the bishop not allow that?

Occasionally a courtship will end instead of leading to marriage.

A bishop is the leader of the church, but not a dictator. He has nothing to do with whether or not courting couples break up.

Since Amish people shun modern things, what do they use for medicine. Do you have any natural remedies to share?

The Amish will go to a regular doctor when there is a need.

A lot of them do try natural remedies when they can. Some more successful than others. Several years ago I did a post of some of the remedies we used to use. You can read it here.

I've heard that Amish are often really young when they get married. How old were you?

I was 19 when we got married. Somehow that sounded a lot older to me at the time, than it does now. I have no regrets though that I was that young when we got married.

  1. 19 sounds much too young to step into a marriage. Glad it worked for you.

  2. I can easily see why Amish can marry so young, with the close hands-on instruction given in day to day living by parents. I'm sure the Amish teens of our area are more capable than I'll ever be to can, bake, cook, sew and clean. garden, mow, drive horses, tractors, do carpenter work, etc. etc.
Our Amish neighbor sent over Rhubarb Strudel the other day. I was a skeptic of rhubarb up until now. Delish!

  3. I appreciate your honesty in your answers. I think most all of us "feel" older than we really are when we get married, and then down the road we look back and think, "we were still just kids!"

I'll be checking out the remedy post, as I believe many of them can actually work and sometimes it just isn't convenient to do to a doctor.

  4. 19 was a common age for women to get married until - maybe the last 10 or 15 yrs or so? Physiologically they are ready. Our society and its particular challenges, in some ways, has encouraged young adults to be more like adolescents.

  5. I meant to add that a lot of young ladies of 19 yrs of age are still getting married and it is the males that are struggling in our culture to step up to the responsibility of marriage and adult life. Some males; a growing problem. Certainly the difficulty in finding good paying jobs - if a man is not a scholar - is contributing.

  6. Thank you for the insight of these answers MaryAnn. I was engaged at 16 and married at 19. We met in a Sunday School class! I have never regretted it although people told us we were way too young. It's been 38 years this summer and I'm more in love with my husband than ever.
    Blessings,

  7. My sister got married at 19, then graduated nursing college and went on to have 6 babies... so far! I waited until I was 28 to get married... personally I hope my girls marry young. Much better to find a God fearing man and marry right away then spend years doing nothing but getting in trouble.. I regret so much of that time but will not dwell on the past!
