Not All Can be a Keeper

I love trying new recipes, and have a keeper file when ever we try a new one that we know we want to enjoy again someday it gets tucked in there. It's the only way that I know I'll be able to find it when I want it again. With hundreds of recipe books the last thing I want to do is have to look through all of them for a certain recipe.

Pinterest has added to that collection. I have pinned a ridiculous amount of things I want to try someday and one thing that I kept seeing in my journeys through the land of Pinterest were cookies and brownies using Andes Crème de Menthe. I have always loved Andes as well as any other peppermint candy. So last week when we went on our weekly grocery run and I happened to see Andes baking chips I knew the time had come to finally try one of those recipes.

We decided to make the recipe for the cookies on the back of the package. Turns out this is a recipe that will stay far away from my keeper file. And I'll also be deleting all the pins I have for Andes recipes.

We're stuck with a cookie jar filled with cookies that taste like I imagine cookies would taste if you used toothpaste to make them. None of us like them and yet I hate simply tossing them. If we wait to do more baking until those cookies have been eaten I think it's safe to say the Kinsingers will all be on a no sugar diet for quite a while.

  1. This post made me chuckle and reminded me of my mom, who when she wanted to make cookies for grandchildren, but didn't want to eat any herself because she was watching her intake, would make peanut butter cookies because she absolutely loathed them! Thanks for the lift today!

  4. That looks like something I would have tried. Glad to see I can now avoid it next time I come across the recipe. :)

  5. Thanks for the hint. No Andes cookies for me. My suggestion is just to toss them in the trash as a lesson learned!

  6. I've used the Nestles chocolate-chip recipe, added pecans, and substituted M&M Mint candies for the chocolate chips called for. They were good....and crunchy from the candy shells on the M&Ms.
Because I like to bake and try new things, I too have had several disappointments. Unlike a cake that flops, that can be "recycled" into a different kind of dessert, or at the very least.....bird food.....there isn't much that you can do if the flavor is really bad. I do appreciate the warning about these chips because I also have seen them in the store and have considered buying them to make cookies.

  7. maybe you can gift them to friends. Surely one of your friends would enjoy them.

  8. Yep. I used them in brownies. They were awful...finally tossed out the remaining half bag of Andes candies.

  9. You have to wonder what goes wrong? I LOVE Andes mints (little rectangle wrapped candies) but have never tried the chips. I wonder if the heat from the oven does it? Well, I won't be the scientist for this project!! I'll stick to my chocolate chips, M & M's, and butterscotch chips!

  10. I wonder if baking with actual "Andes Candies" rather than the chips would give a different result. Not going to try it since I'm the only one who would eat them even if they turned out great!

I used to have roommate that always put nuts in her cookies, because she hated nuts, and loved to bake.

  11. Toothpaste. That's it exactly. I don't like mint in ANY form because it reminds me of toothpaste.

My sister, on the other hand, loved the stuff. One time she made a batch of brownies and put half the batter in the pan, topped it with York Peppermint patties, and then poured in the rest of the brownie mix. She had them cut into squares and put on a plate, and I bit into one, expecting some sort of crème filling - the Mallow Cups - and nearly gagged. Talk about a dirty trick!

  12. eww, toothpaste cookies! I always take it so personally when something I make turns out nasty. I loose my cooking confidence. Do handle it well?

  13. Aww, so sorry they didn't turn out like you expected. You have to admit they do look absolutely delicious!

  14. Next time use real Andies mints and put them on a pan of brownies hot out of the oven. Let then soften for a minute or two and spread like frosting. Yum! and the brownies won't taste like toothpaste.
