Favorite Books

My love for books started at a very young age. I can still remember sitting on Mom or Daddy's lap while they read these to me.

Bedtime stories didn't stop as we grew older and we were soon captivated by the Little House books as well as Caddie Woodlawn.

That Boy, Johnny was a favorite and no matter how often we heard it we were always ready to read it again.

The Grandma's Attic series traveled with me as I read them every where. Sitting under my favorite shade tree, in school, in my bed where I read with the light from my flashlight and my quilt over my head in hopes I wouldn't alert my parents that I wasn't sleeping. I think I could still tell you every story in them from memory.

The first book of the Boxcar Children was one of my favorites and I was always sorry once they moved out of the boxcar. The Bobbsey Twins, books by Beverly Cleary, the Alice and Jerry books were well loved with Singing Wheels being read aloud every winter.

We laughed until our sides hurt at the adventures Jay Berry had in Summer of the Monkeys, and cried until our eyes were red and faces blotchy in Where the Red Fern GrowsBoone's Lick and the rest of the Lewis B. Miller books were read so often the covers became quite tattered. And the things we learned from Two Little Savages we still remember including a fun secret language called Tutnee.

We enjoyed the series by Horatio Alger Jr. where goodness somehow always got rewarded in the end and the villains dealt with quite satisfactorily.

Then there were the classics, Heidi, The Secret Garden, Eight Cousins, as well as the Anne of Green Gables and Elsie Dinsmore series.

Our book shelves weren't complete with out a healthy selection of Amish published books.

I was introduced to Feodora when I was ten and Rosebud now loves it just as much as I used to. Song of Years was an ancient book that my grandparents used to have. The was something about those Martin girls that had this book as one of my favorites during my teen years and the sweet love story that wove it all together helped I'm sure.

Then there were the books by Gene Stratton Porter where I fell even more in love with nature and botany.

This is only a very small sampling of the books that fill the bookshelves in our home.  I love the way books look all lined up neatly on a shelf and how they feel in my hands. But best of all I love how they transport me to a different world.

We have most of the books we grew up reading and loving but I am still keeping my eyes open for some more childhood favorites even as we continue expanding our ever growing selection.

What were/are some of your favorite books?

  1. That Tootles book? I remember it, too! Mom read aloud the entire Laura Ingalls series. There is still a special place in my heart and bookshelf for the Pineapple Quilt. Others I enjoyed...Nancy Drew, Bobbsey Twins, and Dr. Seuss. My husband liked "Treasure Island" so much when he was a boy that he asked his mom about writing the author, who was of course long gone! There was also a book series called "Story Time with the Millers" or something like that, which I liked.

  2. My favorites are "Little Women", The Secret Garden, Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates and A Childs Garden of Verses. I still have them all.

  3. When I was young...The Monster at the End of This Book and nursery rhymes. As I grew older...Little House books, Little Women, and mysteries were among some of my favorites. As I grew up, I would read nearly everything I could put my hands on. I'm a little pickier as an adult, but I can still read almost anything. I still like a good mystery, but find it more difficult to find one I'm satisfied with. My favorites right now are anything by Janette Oke and some books from the Love Inspired line. And recently someone gave me a study Bible that is in the New Living Translation. I'm enjoying reading it and finding some things a lot easier to grasp and understand.

  4. I loved Nancy Drew. I want to share this book I finished yesterday. It was so good! It is called "First Date". It is the story of Esther with the setting in reality tv. The character is 17 years old. I did not want to put the book down.

  6. I haven't thought of 'Girl of the Limberlost' in decades! My favorites were 'Bambi, a Life in the Woods' - the Felix Salten translation, not the Disney version. Then I found Albert Payson Terhune's books on his collies, "Lad A Dog", "Sunnybank, Home of Lad," etc. Of course the Bobbsy Twins books, and Nancy Drew. We also had a large book of Grimm's Fairy Tales that Mom would read from, too. So many memories!

  7. Where the Red Fern Grows would be my favorite, Charlotte's Web would rank pretty high also! I love To Kill a Mockingbird. I try to read that one every couple of years!

  8. Oh my heavens....A Girl of the Limberlost was my absolute favorite one summer when I was young. As a matter of fact, I just got it out a few weeks ago and had to read it quickly again. Others I read were Daniel Boone, the Bobbsey Twins and Nancy Drew. An all time favorite when I was smaller was "The Water Babies Circus". The illustrations were so sweet and I loved the cute little stories that Mom read to us everyday before our nap. Oh, such sweet memories with books.

  9. After we were talking about books yesterday, it made me want to go down and unpack and just browse all the ones we've packed away. I always liked Nancy Drew (and secretly wanted to read my way through all of them, though I never did), The Secret Garden, Judy Blume books, and when I was littler, I liked the Curious George books, Peter Rabbit, and Harold & the Purple Crayon. One of my all-time favorites is To Kill a Mockingbird.

  10. It's funny. I grew up here in the world but was born to older parents so I read most of the titles you just named, and a few more. As a kid I loved the book, Baker's Hawk, and can recommend it to any 8-12 year old.

  11. I loved Beatrix Potter books when I was young, and the little house books were a favorite too. Little golden books were a favorite with my children...I still have the ones I read to them. Books are so wonderful..the good ones anyway. I still enjoy reading very much. I love reading books about the Amish. I love vintage children's books and read them to my grands every chance I get.....blessings

  12. I am so surprised that noone mentioned Barrie's Peter Pan, or any of the Winnie the Pooh books. I loved those! Also...the original book of Boxcar Children was a favorite,as were the Little House books. I read many of the Bobbsey Twins ones, and Beverly Cleary books too. I've always loved a Child's Garden of Verses, and I love to read poetry now, and short stories, rather than full-length books. However,if I start one, I'll finish it! Gone With The Wind,as long as it is, is my all-time favorite book.

  14. I so enjoyed reading this post because I, also, have always loved reading! I will come back later to list some of my favorites, but didn't want to forget to tell you about the Happy Hollister series, which I think you might enjoy if you like the Bobbsey Twins.

  15. A couple that others mentioned:

Bambi, Peter Pan and Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates - all the originals. I still have these: they belonged to my Mother when she was young (she's now 75), I read them (I just turned 37) and now my daughter (age 7) is having a hard time keeping her nose out!

We're also currently enjoying the whole Narnia series.

Since my parents were older too, I grew up with many that you have shown here too - that's for the delightful memories!

  16. so many of my favorite books have been mentioned already, but I have to tell you about the All-of-a-Kind Family series. sort of like a turn-of-the-century urban Little House. anyone know The Glassblower's Children? gorgeous book. and Misty of Chincoteague and all the other Marguerite Henry books.
and no one's mentioned Black Beauty! or Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle!
even though I don't have my own children I have a small library of special young-people books for the children in my life to share.
books were my best friends when I was a kid.

  17. Wow! We read so many of the same great books. Another series I really enjoyed was the Mandie Books and many books by Lois Lenski. I have never read We Help Mommy. I'd love to get one of those. I had We Help Daddy and now read it to my children occasionally.

  18. Hi,
Just found your blog, and I've been reading through it. We attended Liberty Faith years ago, but it was just a little too far to drive, so we are attending another church closer to home. We pick up Reg's latest CD's whenever we go to the sale barn nearby the truck stop in Norwood. We really enjoy his preaching. I'm looking forward to reading your book and reading more here on your blog.:-)
God bless you and your sweet family,
    Anne♥

  19. So many of the books mentioned are also on my bookshelf. I also read the Trixie Belden series and to this day, they are still among my favorites. Nothing beats the old, classic books!
