The main floorplan in our farmhouse was very open with the livingroom, dining room, and kitchen being in a big L shape. It made it nice that I was able to be working in the kitchen and still be able to keep an eye on Sailor as he played in the livingroom.
He spent hours playing happily with his toy tractor and a few animals everyday. As soon as he had been able to sit by himself those were the toys of his choice.
One day he was playing and I wanted to make a batch of homemade ice-cream. Setting the hand cranked freezer into the sink and a few pails of icy snow on the rug next to me I was ready to start. It was a long tedious task trying to do it by myself but I kept turning the crank and adding more snow around the tub. I had the stick that i usually used to lift laundry out of the hot water of the washing machine to poke and pack the snow harder into the freezer. Pausing a little I realized that Sailor was strangely quiet, no happy tractor sounds were coming from his direction. I looked into the living room and he wasn't in sight. Leaving the ice cream I went to see what was happening.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I found him sitting at the end of the couch with a pair of scissors and his pant legs both cut into hundreds of little pieces on the floor next to him. All that was left of each leg was a little strip hanging down the back that he had been unable to reach. I wasn't very happy about it but had the wildest urge to burst out laughing at the sight.
I changed him and then set him on the sink to watch me until the ice cream was done. I left the pile of shredded pant legs and the butchered pants on the floor so LV could see them once he came into the house.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh wowwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!! Isn't it amazing how those little ones, can get into things? Oh sigh. You must have laughed, but you also must have had your heart sink. Thinking of how lucky you were, that he had not cut himself.
ReplyDeleteOh my! And oh yes. When one doesn't HEAR them, one has to look. -giggles- No sound usually means doing something that's not allowed. ,-)
.♥.
I always know there is trouble when the house is quiet!! LOL
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't imagine finding him in a pile of cloth shreds! He must have been quite adept with the scissors, at least by the time you found what he was doing, anyways.
ReplyDeleteAt least it was his pants he was cutting, and he didn't cut himself. Still... I bet you and LB weren't in the least bit impressed with him!

Sadly, using scissors without permission runs in our extended family, too. Expensive curtains are the current target, ack.

ReplyDeleteI imagine you were just relieved he didn't injure himself, I'm not surprised you felt like laughing!! They get up to such mischief don't they, without even realising it, LOL.

What is it with little boys and scissor?
ReplyDeleteMy nephew once got my sister-in-law's scissors off the table and cut the cord running from her sewing machine to the wall outlet. Yikes!
Oh, it is amazing how kids can get into everything. I remember my daughter finding the nail polish and painting it all over my beautiful quilt...made by my grandma. I was completely devastated. I was so afraid to tell Grannie because she made queen size hand quilted quilts for all her grandchildren. Finally I got the nerve to tell her...and made me another one. I love my Grannie.
ReplyDeleteGreat post.
It's not just children that one has to monitor when things get too quiet---it's cats too. I have 4. "Mama's Merry Little Band of Murderers". When I'm home, I leave the front door open so they can walk around the yard if they like. Occasionally they pick up a lizard or a frog and bring it in, then gather in a circle around the poor thing & take turns poking it. When things get quiet & I see a knot of yellow kitties in a corner, I know they're up to something, and come to investigate. Love them but sometimes---oooooooohhhh...!
ReplyDeleteOne of mine snuck up behind me and snipped the pocket of my trousers while I was wearing them!! Cx
ReplyDeleteYou have to watch out for that quiet. One Saturday, when my daughter was almost 2, my husband and I were lazing around, reading, when we suddenly noticed that we had heard NO SOUND from Emma in quite awhile (translation: way too long). We found her on the porch, holding her father's wallet, and happily tossing driver's license, credit cards, car registration, etc., into the yard. Fortunately, we got it all back.
ReplyDeleteMy lovely boys have a fondness for trimming their own hair. After having it happen a few times, I have an eagle's eye out for scissors left laying around.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the laughing part, too. I have had a few where it is so hard to keep a straight face!
OH My, I hope you did laugh a lil after the scare...and I now wonder what LV's reaction was as well...
ReplyDelete~~HUGS~~
Quiet is very suspicious! I remember finding my 4 year old very quiet under the table. Upon further inspection, I noticed he had not only cut his socks, but he also cut a bald spot out of his hair with a pair of kid's safety scissors! I laughed. He cried.
ReplyDeleteHeeehehehe!!! This was great! Ya gotta watch those youngens with scissors!!! Geek Son cut his own hair, (gee I didn't want to take him out in public) and daughter, Social Butterfly trimmed the cat...real good! :o)
ReplyDeleteIt was so good to hear from ya again!
Have a beautifully blessed day sweetie!!!
How clever that little boy has been, and what a blessing only his pants got shredded.
ReplyDeleteI remember when my husband came out from our bedroom, triumphantly showing
the clock our daughter had dissembled to pieces.
I was shocked that the clock had been ruined, hubby was proud to have such a clever daughter.
When our daughter was 3, her playschool teacher said she was "battling with using scissors"....she spoke too soon as the next moment I found her hairdressing skills being used on a doll baby PLUS herself. Fortunately, hers grew back, but sadly, dolly's didn't!
ReplyDeleteMy nephew cut up the bed sheets, turned them into something that looked like a fishing net, and gave the curtains a fringe-all with a pair of 'school scissors'- during naptime. My sister was horrified by the scene when she went to get him up from his nap.
ReplyDeleteIronic! Wasn't it just a year or two before that your brother took the scissors to the headcoverings you had just made?! It may be genetic! lol!!!
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying reading your blog. I found it through your Lily books, which my 10-year-old daughter is reading. This story made us all laugh! I had to admire his scissor skills and concentration - something wonderful when directed the right way.
