For a long time my Mom had only three cookbooks. And the one she used the most was a hard covered light blue book with it's simple cover design and named simply "Amish Cooking"
As an eager young cook, it was the first recipe book I used and it wasn't long before the pages showed tell tale signs that I was a beginner. They became spattered and dirty much to my dismay. Mom wasn't thrilled at how I was ruining her cookbook, but never complained about it either saying that she would keep it and think of me when ever she uses it.
Years and hundreds of cookbooks later I still find myself turning to this book the most. It still holds many of our favorite recipes, from pancakes and grapenuts to Apple Goodie and Pecan Pie and everything in between. With page after page of tried and true recipes it will always remain an important item for my kitchen.
Since I like it so well I thought I would give one of these cookbooks away. If you would like to have a chance to win it all you have to do is leave a comment telling me something that you still have or wish you still had from your childhood.
For a second entry post a link to this giveaway on your blog them come back and leave another comment telling me you did.
I will be choosing the winner on Monday Nov 22nd using Random.org Please make sure I have a way of contacting you if you are the winner.
Disclaimer: The only compensation I get from doing this giveaway is the warm happy feeling it gives me to be able to give someone one of my favorite cookbooks.
Giveaway is now closed and the winner chosen.
As I am writing this I can see a baby doll sitting in a doll highchair that I had as a little girl -- she's at least 50 years old now -- and it brings back memories of happy childhood days.
ReplyDeleteGreat give away! Sounds like a wonderful book!
ReplyDeleteI am a avid reader of Amish books and i have several of the AMish Cookbooks by Elizabeth Coblentz and her daughter with Kevin.I am always looking for more so this would be perfect. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI wish I still had a toy farm set I got one year for Christmas. I played more with that than any other toy I received as a child. I loved making pens, putting cows in one, pigs in one, and horses in another.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cookbook is the '50's version of the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. I learned to cook from it.
One of my most sentimental possessions, is a medal I have from when I made my First Holy Communion 50 years ago. That special day forever lives in my memory and heart.
ReplyDeleteI also have an old, battered cookbook which was my mother's and was passed on to me when I left home to marry and start my own mothering journey. Wonderful ties to my childhood and growing up :-) blessings..Trish
Count me in! One of my favorite toys from when I was little (and I still have it) is my Susie doll. My mom would make clothes for her and I remember taking her everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI still have the antique rocker with doll that sat in the room where I got to sleep at my aunt's (for whom I was named) house. Everytime I look at the rocker, I have great memories. I would love the Amish cookbook as I visit Lancaster PA often and shop at the Amish stores (and drool over their quilts). This trip we bought some homemade Amish rootbeer at a farm...delicious.
ReplyDeleteSomething I wish I still had from my childhood would be the love of a father...something I no longer have.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI have a teddy bear from my grandmother that was given to me when I was born. thirty six years later I still have it. I hope I win.
Good Morning!
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I wish I still had from childhood is my horse. I rode him all the time. He would eat ice cream from the spoon and Coca Cola out of the bottle. Ha.
Please enter me in your give away.
I wish I still had my grandfather with me...he passed away when I was 11 and he was a wonderful person and I looked up to him tremendously. Thanks for this giveaway!

That looks like a really nice cook-book. I would love to have it for my cook-book collection. As far as my childhood item, I would say it is a little Mexican doll that my Grandmother brought me back from Mexico. She is my only surviving toy as we had three house fires when I was growing up and not much saved. The doll has a small burn mark on her cheek but otherwise is just as good as new! She sits on a shelf in my bedroom.
ReplyDeleteI had this ceramic wall hanging of a clown hanging from a rainbow .... when you pulled the clown down it played 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'. I have no idea what happened to it but I look for it on eBay all the time!
ReplyDeletemy grandmother crocheted me a strawberry shortcake doll. i really wish i still had her!
ReplyDeletethanks for the opportunity to win. i would love to have this cookbook! have a great weekend! ;)
I wish I still had a beautiful manicure set my father gave me :)
ReplyDeleteI had a doll that I really loved. When I moved out of my mother's house, she threw away all my old things without even asking what I wanted to keep.
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog. I am so anxious to find out why you didn't marry LV and stay in the Amish community.
I still have my rocker from when I was little but I wish I still had my Madam Alexander doll that I got for Christmas one year. She was really special to me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway.
My grandparents gave me a teddy bear the day I was born. I still have it in my room! His name is Jose, by the way :-)
ReplyDeleteThis cookbook sounds like a great book to learn. I have just recently started cooking at home, and my mother and grandmother don´t have any cookbooks: they know all the recipies by heart, which makes it really hard for me to cook without them. I´m still in the process of writting down all the recipies!
I love cookbooks, and would LOVE an Amish one!!
ReplyDeleteI still have my cedar chest my Dad made me when I was 10 or so. It's the first big item he made with his "wood mosaics" all over it. If you are wondering what I mean by "wood mosaics" you can see his woodworking at his etsy shop at the following link. :)

I use to love to draw when I was little (age 2nd and 3rd grade.) I wish I had some of the things that I drew.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to reading more...
When I think about my childhood the thing that I miss the most is when me and all my other 5 siblings were at home still. I miss those days of living at home and spending time together.
ReplyDeleteI still have a child-size doll from when I was around 3. There are pictures of me around that age dancing with this doll.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this chance to win!
I love cookbooks but I've never seen or read an Amish one ( maybe because I live in Portugal ). I would love to de the happy winner.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win this.I have such an interest in Amish life.
ReplyDeleteI have still got my grandmother's cookbook, which I remember her using so often. All the recipes are named by her, for example 'Mrs Jones' seed cake', 'Aunt Ivy's fruit slice'. I still dip into it for an old favourite.
My grandmother crocheted a baby blanket, booties, and hat for one of my dolls when I was little, I don't think I have any of the pieces anymore, I wish I did, bc I'll never be able to duplicate them.
ReplyDeleteThere was a doll that I had when I was little that I still wish I had. It was a simple plastic baby doll that I took everywhere, gave baths to, and slept with. She had become so tattered looking that I began to call her "my poor doll". And that became her name. My mother thought she would do something nice for me and send the doll back to the company to have them put new hair on her. They, in turn, thought they would do something nice, and sent me back a brand new doll. Needless to say, it was NOT "my poor doll" and I desperately tried to muss up her hair so she looked like her old self! I sure do miss "my poor doll"!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Lisa
I just posted a comment on my blog about it!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this giveaway!
I love amish cookbooks! I love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI still have many of the books from my childhood. I also have many of my dresses, in the form of quilts. Those quilts mean so much to me.
ReplyDeleteWhen I 7 or 8 my mom made me and my brother a girl and boy doll for Christmas and she made them for some close friends too. My friend, Kristi, still has her doll and I don't know what happened to my doll. I was wishing I still had it but I found the pattern when I was going through my mothbers stuff after she passed away. So, I will be making myself another doll and one for each of my kids!
ReplyDeleteWish that the simpler life of my childhood was back.
ReplyDeleteI would love to enter your giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI was raised by my grandparents on their small farm, not far from where I live now. I dearly wished I could have that little farm, but sadly it was sold out of the family! Some of my happiest days were spent on that farm!
I wish that I still had the little hard cover book that contained the 45 record with all the German lyrics of the songs that my mom and I used to sing while we were doing dishes together.
ReplyDeleteMy mom saved a ton of stuff from when I was little. The one that I still have (stored in the headboard) is my blankie. It's tattered, but still mine.
ReplyDeleteThe Queen of England came to visit the country where I lived (Dominica) and I still have the flyer from her Royal visit. I wish I had some of toys I played with as a child, especially the Fisher Price Schoolhouse. They would probably be collector's items now and worth some money. And of course the Holly Hobbie stuff that was popular in those days.
ReplyDeletePlease enter me in your drawing.
Great cooking must start somewhere and this little cook book sounds like it just might be a clue!
ReplyDeleteOf all the things I loved about my growing up years, I think I miss my mom's cooking the most; especially her crullers (made only at this time of year.) She would put powdered sugar on them and they didn't last long at all. For us little ones, she used a piggie and a bunnie cutter ..perfect size for little fingers and tummies!
I wish I had the recipe! I have all of her cookbooks but can't not find that one recipe :-(
Thanks so much for the comment you left on my blog! Your blog looks really interesting! I can't wait to read more!
ReplyDeletePlease enter me in your drawing. I LOVE cookbooks. I would love to have the Betsy Wetsie Doll I got when I was around 4 years old. She was my favorite doll. Unfortunately her tummy rotted out probably from a friend encouraging me to feed her milk and cola instead of water. Recall the milk soured and she smelled awful for a while. After Momma found out she fed her some soapy/cleaner/detergent water to clean her out.
ReplyDeleteI tried to "link" on my blog but not sure it worked .. so I copied and pasted the site address :-) I'm looking forward to the results .. whoever wins will have a whole season to try out some new recipes!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and read it often.
ReplyDeleteI was given a cookbook for my 7th birthday and I still have it! As I am 57 now, that was a long time ago! It had a recipe in it called Orange Freeze that I can remember making.
I just discovered your lovely blog and spent several hours over the last few days reading every post! :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little girl, I received an Easy Bake Oven for Christmas! I loved baking little cakes in it...so much so that I still have it to this day! Of course, now that I have 4 children, I do all of my baking in a larger oven! :)
I posted about your giveaway on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI have a kid's cookbook put out by Betty Crocker that we used at home. And I also have a recipe card handwritten by my grandma for molasses cookies. She made the best!
ReplyDeleteWhen I think about my childhood the thing that I miss the most is My Grandmother!
ReplyDeleteWould Love this cookbook!
~~HUGS~~
When I moved away from home, I took a saucepan that my mom got for a wedding gift. I still have it and it is my favorite. After 54 years it cooks better than any I've ever used.
ReplyDeleteWow this would be a great cook book to have . I have a little green dress, my Grandmother made me when I was pro. three or four years old
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a child, my mom had a pink binder where she had her recipies, most of them written by hand, some cut out from magazines. I think she still has it. I wanted to be like mom, so my parents bought me a purple binder and I started gathering my own collection of recipies. I still use my binder on regular basis. It makes me smile when I use a recipe that I've written down as an 8 year old. :)
ReplyDeleteMrs. P.
That cookbook would get a lot of use here at my house. :) Something I wish I still had from childhood? My old Winnie the Pooh bear that you could wind up and he would play a song.
ReplyDeleteSomething I still have? All my old diaries and a couple of my first dolls.
Blessings to you ~ "It is more blessed to give than receive"

I found your blog by way of Jenny Wren. I'm very interested in reading more here at your blog.
ReplyDeleteI recently bought the book "More Food that Really Schmecks" which is considered a Mennonite type cooking. I just call good, hearty, delicious food. I'll bet your Amish cookbook is loaded with the best dishes. I wish I had more of my German Grandma's recipes.

I enjoy reading your blog and would love to win the cookbook. I still have my scrapbooks from growing up and enjoy looking thru them. They bring back memories! Thanx, Linda G. at rgranch@pioneer.net
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog!
ReplyDeleteI still have quite a few things from my childhood--books, dolls, my old sled, so it is hard to think of something I still wish I had...but I think that it would be nice to have my great-grandma and great-grandpa back for a little while. They both died when I was young, and I would love the opportunity to spend some time with them.
I would love to be entered into your giveaway.

I used to have a set of plastic dinosaurs that I loved hugely. I'd love to have them to give to my daughter or some of the books I remember. On the other hand, I am quite glad that I have my old favorite stuffed animal and my daughter _does_ enjoy that.
ReplyDeleteI have a little silverplate fork and spoon with "Campbell Kids" on them. They were mine when I was a little girl and my children, and now my grandson have all used them.
ReplyDeleteI had a rag doll named Jemima when I was little. I wish I still had her!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the opportunity to win such a precious book. :)

I would love this cookbook! I have just two Amish cookbooks and love them.
ReplyDeleteFrom childhood the thing I wish I still had was the handstitched quilt my grandmother made for my 10th birthday...it was lost on a move across country and I still miss it.
I don't have anything left from my childhood but I wish I still had my favorite doll I named Rebecca.
ReplyDeleteI had a stuffed white kitten, it was really soft and it was my favorite toy.
ReplyDeleteI've so enjoyed reading this entire collection of comments. Thank you all for what you've shared.
ReplyDeleteFrom my own childhood I miss my most very favorite uncle. I was never alone in this world as long as he was alive.
I treasure mementos from the past, so I have many things from childhood, but the things I treasure most are probably the Bible my Grandma taught me Scripture memorization from that my parents gave me, and a poster that my daddy bought me, and the quilt my mom made me for Christmas one year. I also have many things in storage at my mom and dad's house that I'll dig out someday. :-)
ReplyDeleteI recently wrote about something that I wish I still had from childhood - a doll that my grandmother made for me that I didn't appreciate at first.
ReplyDeleteOh dear. I'm not sure why my domain name is showing up where my actual name should be (#63). I apologize! - Wendy
ReplyDeleteI really love reading your blog (after finding it I spent several days reading all the posts backwards from the beginning) and now for the first time I'm actually posting a comment.
ReplyDeleteI had a doll from my Grandma that would cry when she lied down and I wish I still had it.
What I do have is a replica of my dad's old Betty Crocker Cooky book. Just looking at the pictures makes me feel like a kid again. :)
I wish I still had all the Christmas ornaments my mom had gotten me a new one every year but i think they got lost in a move when I was about 18.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite little stuffed bunny went missing after our move when I was little. I cried for days and would love to have it back :) Her name was Mrs.Bunny haha

What a wonderful cook book! I still have a Shirley Temple doll that I received as a Christmas gift when I was a child. Thanks for entering me in your giveaway.
ReplyDeleteHi, thank you for commenting on my blog. It's good to "meet" you and I'm looking forward to reading about your journey.
ReplyDeleteI have my Mom's old Betty Crocker cookbook. I can remember cooking from it. It's pages are spattered as well and the spine has been reinforced with duck tape! But I love it!
Blessings

Hi, again. I blogged about your giveaway on my blog.

Patty H.
I too have a cookbook from my childhood. I received the Betty Crocker cookbook for boys & girls for Christmas along with a child-sized apron. It's one of my favorite momentos.
ReplyDeleteSeveral years ago my mom made cookbooks for each of us kids as a Christmas gift. The book consists of recipes for foods we ate growing up; and she also added little tidbits throughout the book about how we liked the recipe and who gave her the recipe or when she first began making the recipe. It is truly a book I treasure as it brings back such fond memories of my childhood.
ReplyDeleteIf the cookbook story doesn’t qualify as something from my childhood then I will also mention I have a Chatty Cathy doll that I played with when I was little. My grandmother took the doll from me when I stopped taking care of it. She dressed the doll and displayed her in the guest bedroom. When grandma died I got the doll back and thankfully I am old enough now to take better care of it!
I had this beautiful dollhouse that my grandpa & mom had made for me together when I was a little girl. I absolutely adored it. I'm not sure what happened to it - when I moved out, Mom ended up moving away and I think she may have given it away. It was so special though & I hope that someday my DH & I can make my own little girl one like that! I also have a wonderful cookbook - an old Betty crocker - that my mom used often. I found a copy on ebay and bought it - I use it ALL the time with my own family & its so special to remember those days learning to cook & bake with my mom!
ReplyDeleteThank you!

My grandmother had an old treadle sewing machine that I loving to play with as a child. I would sit for hours stepping on the big peddle wathings the wheel go around.
ReplyDeleteMy mother was not one to save...so I have very few things from my childhood. My favorite toy was a Jerry Mahoney doll...it was a Christmas gift from my aunt. Thanks to eBay, I was able to purchase the exact model...when Jerry arrived, he was even stored in the same brown suitcase I used for my beloved Jerry!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for offering the giveaway.
Busy Hands...Happy Hearts

I also LOVE my copy of Amish Cooking. It is one of my "go to" recipe books for coleslaw, pie crusts, and so many others. Whomever wins this cookbook will be blessed beyond measure.
