Why do children enjoy noise? It isn't enough to just pop the bubbles on big bubble wrap. Today I caught them holding it beside their ears to pop them to get the full benefit of the noise.
I could understand it if they would be trying to hold it beside each others ears but to voluntarily hold it beside your own ear?

Does anyone have a recipe how to fix hominy that it actually tastes good?
The past three years Sailor has not talked about much except ships, and being a captain once he is big enough. But recently he has dropped it in favor of building a pioneer village. And now he is excited about all things pioneer.
I bought some hominy and fixed a little bit tonight and since trying to eat it he is rethinking the whole pioneer thing. After tasting it his description was. "It's like trying to eat wet paper towels Mom."
So if anyone could share a recipe to make them more tasty I would greatly appreciate that.

I really, really detest mending. And when an almost new pair of Wranglers come home with a big cut (by a chainsaw) all the way across the leg and getting part of the pocket too it does not create the happiest moments in ones life.
After trying to care for the ugly wound, you focus on the pair of Wranglers and wonder if it wouldn't be easier to just buy a new pair every week or so.

There are all sorts of jobs out there, and when your husband's choice of occupation involves one with a higher than average risk of injury, you just have to stay occupied with nice quiet things and not dwell on the maybe's and what ifs too much.
But every once in a while something happens that reminds you anew of the danger he is in everyday. You try to bandage him up with the best of your ability, take a picture of the injured area and threaten to post it on your blog.
But instead of sharing the gruesome picture you just take an old song and change some of the words.
"Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be loggers!
They work too hard and get lots of scars.
The remaining lyrics to the revised version shall remain a secret.
I think hominy is made by taking field corn of the cob and cooking it with a little bag of wood ash and than after it is done cooking it is rinsed in water. Than it can be ground up and made into a dough for tortillas.
ReplyDeleteOr the corn kernels can be eaten with milk like breakfast cereal. These are just some thoughts,As I have not made hominy my self ,But have watched my older brother make it.
Oh I love to pop bubble wrap, especially the big bubbles...just not real close to my ears!

ReplyDeleteHi, Thanks for visiting my blog. As for hominy, I think it is best as an ingredient in other dishes rather than the main ingredient itself. I know it is used in those great New Orleans style gumbos and in Mexican soups.
ReplyDeleteI know hominy is similar to grits, but not exactly the same. I like grits with butter and brown sugar for breakfast. Sorry to all the cringing Southerners reading that!
I still can't resist popping a bubble or two on the bubble wrap - it must be human instinct! Your husband's a logger and you're a blogger - how cute is that??? ha ha Let's see, hominy...I do like songs in two-part hominy - is that what you mean?? I know, so lame. ReplyDeleteMy husband adores hominy just heated up a bit with butter. It's an acquired taste, for sure, and I'm not a fan. Pass the creamed corn my way any day though.

I use the Mexican hominy and make Pozole...a really good soup...you can find a variety of recipes on the internet.

The only time I eat hominy is in a Mexican dish called Menudo. I love the stuff but most do not. Mainly cause of the ingredients.

I had never heard of homminy before, so I had to google it. It looks like something we call polenta here. You can add cheese to it tio make it more tasty, or herbs? No?

ReplyDeleteMy son once went through a pirate phase. He lived the life of piracy for a few days or weeks, can't remember which, but we had to had pirate food, complete with "ship's biscuits" a recipe we got out of a library book about pirates. Oh, my, you have never tasted anything that awful. Fifteen years later it is now the standard by which all things awful are evaluated.

ReplyDeleteI like to add hominy to scrambled eggs along with green chiles, onions and cheese (but we like hominy).

Brown some sausages - kielbasa or whatever - in a frying pan, then add your hominy and some butter. "Chop it loose", maybe add some onion and/or bell pepper, and then cover and let it simmer for a bit, stirring from time to time. Really good. I know you said you don't like ketchup, but it is a nice addition to this dish.
