I am wondering what kind of celebrations the Amish have? Do they celebrate Christmas as a celebration of Christ's birth and if so how traditional is it? Thanksgiving?
The Amish celebrate Christmas as a celebration of Christ birth. Usually a few gifts are exchanged, but there is no tree or stockings etc. Extended family usually gather for a big meal and an afternoon filled with visiting and eating candies and snacks that were prepared especially for Christmas.
Thanksgiving is observed differently in different areas. The area we grew up it was treated as a Sunday and everyone went to church. There was no work done on Thanksgiving. Other areas have it as a day of fasting, and still others either have a big turkey dinner or ignore it altogether.
I am wondering if Amish women use birth control?
I am sure some of them do. However it is frowned upon.
What faith or denomination are you now a part of?
We are Christians and attend a non denominational church.

On another topic we had to take Sunbeam to the doctor for another checkup. I had been really hoping that she will be able to run and play like she used to before the accident, but that will have to wait at least another six weeks. She is allowed to use her walker a little bit everyday which is an improvement, it's just not as good as what I was hoping for.

One of my best friends and her daughter were here and brought their little dog along. Sunbeam had fun playing with it and dressing it up in her doll clothes. It is the sweetest little dog and I would be happy to adopt it if it ever needed a new home. (Wishful thinking!)
Could you elaborate on how the Lancaster Amish are so different?
ReplyDeleteEnjoy reading your blog.

That is so cute how she dressed that little doggie up! You have to love a dog that is that patient with a child to let them do that to them. It would have to be a sweet and tender hearted little doggie. I sure wish that Sunbeam was all better too! I'm sure she is getting restless having to sit around.
ReplyDeleteHere is a little cheap craft that she can do with the other kids too. I just did it with my kids! Give them a piece of construction paper, a glue stick and some grocery store ads. They can cut out the different food pictures to make menus or even a store list for you! My 11 yr old daughter enjoyed doing it as well as my 5 yr old boy. If I can think of something else, which I can't right now, I will write you back!
By the way, we are also Christians who attend a Non-Demoninational Church who teaches from the Bible. Our church has been doing a book of the month from the Bible and our Pastor preaches on the book of the month on Wednesdays in detail.
God Bless!

So glad to have an update on Sunbeam. I am afraid I have been away from my computer far to long. Since I have missed some of your post.
ReplyDeleteThe dog is so cute! Could see why you would not mind adopting it, if it needed a home.
I really enjoyed your Answering Quetions!
Have a wonderful day!
Jenny
Thank you for finishing out the questions.
ReplyDeleteMy heart is so touched by Sunbeam's plight. We are going to pray that her recovery moves along more quickly. I just saw an answer to prayer today that had me with my face in my hands completely broken and crying just 48 hrs. ago. It has strengthened my faith. Blessings to you and your precious family.
Since I have just started reading your blog and I so enjoy it..but missed out on Sunbeam and her "accident"...and sorry the update is not what we expected...but I am adding her to my prayer list and asking several others to do the same...God Bless...and that pupppy is so cute!!! hugs from Ora in KY
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your Q & A posts. They were very interesting. I'm sorry that Sunbeam isn't going to be back at full play, but I'm so thankful that she is improving. She seems to be so content in her situation. That is quite a blessing. Glad she had the dog to play with...she deserves some extra special fun!

Glad to here Sunbeam is getting better.
ReplyDeleteThis is a long road for her and I am sure it feels slow.
I bet the cute little dog really helped put some sunshine in her day! So cute!
I hope Sunbeam is able to run and play soon. Glad she had the friend and cute little dog to play with.
ReplyDeleteOh you dear momma, I am so sorry little Sunbeam has not progressed as far as you had hoped. That is so hard on mommy hearts. But know that you and your little dear ones are lifted in prayer all the way over here!
ReplyDeleteAll the answers in the last three posts that I just now had time to catch up with are very interesting. Tough decisions are even tougher when you know that they will be met with hurt instead of understanding.
You are truly blessed, you know that? Look at all these people who are praying for you and your family! That has got to be the best feeling. Whenever people are praying for me, it feels like a warm hug and I know that is about the cornyist (corniest?) thing in the world and sounds goofy but that really is how I feel!
ReplyDeleteAbout your answers, the thing I like the most is that even though you chose to leave the Amish for your own reasons, you're not bashing them or the religion - it just wasn't where you were led. I bet that's hard to do sometimes and you're handling it very diplomatically. They do have a much simpler way of life, and that's attractive for people whose lives are hectic beyond hectic, but when you're on the outside, that's just what you see of them - the outside. You're doing a great job - this is great reading!! Have a good day ~
Yes, thanks again for taking all the questions and answering them so candidly. What a great learning experience for all of us.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless,

I read with amusement the questions asked of you.Do people think the the Amish are another species perhaps? We all are individual, though some more than others. We all live different ways of life. However,it seems that your readers assume that the Amish are a nation of pure people, that amongst the rules and regulations,no harm will ever come to you, that there is no bad- no evil. The sin in having one's image on a photograph may not be taken lightly for the Elders but a lot of the Amish willingly pose for a tourist who has pushed $10 into their hand. The Amish who frown on smoking but are large tobacco growers. As with any faith or race, there is no purebred in the Amish, nor are they a freak show to be mocked and it is definately no lifestyle to be idealised.People should take time to read in depth the accounts of the Amish outside of these tourism books and films.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting reading your answers! Thanks for sharing...:-)
ReplyDeleteBlessings from the valley!
Very interesting Q&A
ReplyDeleteI hope Sunbeam will get better sooner.
Thanks for coming by my site and leaving a comment. Your site is very interesing and I'm enjoying exploring it.
ReplyDeleteOk. . .I just sorted by your children label to find out about Sunbeam.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was 4 years old I had surgery on my legs and was in a body cast for 6 weeks and needed to learn to walk again. I still remember my mom putting my little 45 record player near enough to me so I could play records myself.
We also have pictures of me in the yard where she dragged a mattress in the yard and had my dad carry me out (I was unbendable and the cast was heavy)--because she thought I needed sun!
I hope Sunbeam continues to mend and receive loving visitors! I still remember folks coming to visit me in the hospital and reading The Littlest Angel to me!
Best wishes--Sandy
