Plain Buggies ~ Giveaway

Recently while browsing through a store I came upon their display of Amish related books. The title Plain Buggies seemed to jump out at me, curious where they found enough material about buggies to fill a book of this size I paged through it a little bit and was hooked.

With lots of beautiful photos and loads of interesting information about the ninety plus different buggy styles and how they are used it kept me intrigued enough to keep turning pages until I had read almost the entire book.

At one place where they were talking about open buggies they included this: (often offensively called a "courting buggy" by outsiders) I couldn't help but smile when I read that. Having people call them courting buggies never offended me even though that is not what the Amish call them.

I found the book very entertaining and informative. And because I like it so well I decided to give you an opportunity to get a copy.

If you would like a chance to win a copy of Plain Buggies simply leave a comment telling me what vehicle you used to ride in most often when you were six years old.

As usual if you would like a second entry place a link to this giveaway on your blog or Facebook and then come back and tell me you did.

I will be choosing a winner on June 1st using my friend, the Random Generator.

Giveaway is now closed and a winner has been chosen.

  2. I must admit to being very curious about this book Mary Ann!
Mode of transportation at age 6? Hmm, well we mostly used our two feet or the tram (trolley for you I believe?) but Dad was still with us and occasionally we could ride in his convertible MG (2 seaters!)!
Thank you for the sweet opportunity and God bless,

  3. When I was six my parents had a VW Bug; I remember riding in the little space behind the back seat. Of course this was in the "olden days" before seat belts and car seats. I was the fourth child so the three big kids got to sit on the seat and I was in the very back. I thought it was fun and felt cozy and safe back there.

  4. Wow, my hubby would love this I think. We just got a buggy horse, cause one of our Amish neighbor's moved away and couldn't take her with him or find anyone to buy her...so now DH is building us a buggy so she can go for a drive now and then. It would be interesting to see the different kinds of buggy's and read about them. I think my parents had an old scout when I was 6...but can't remember for sure when we got it. It was 4 wheel drive, which was nice to have at times since we lived back in the hills. :-))

  6. I would be the New York City subway. We had a car when I was younger, and then again once my brother was born, but even then subway or bus was most common. The car was for road trips.

  10. Well, it was a 1949 Ford maroon 2 door. It was our family car. But seriously, many days I rode in our little pony cart and our pony "Chief" would pull it. Oh, I would love to win your buggy book. We would truly enjoy it. Thank you for the give away.

  14. I rode the most in my dad's mobile grinder-mixer. He owned a chicken hatchery and feed store and every day after school and on Saturdays I got to go grinding with Dad to farms all over the county!

  15. I was born during the Second World War, and my parents bought a brand new Gun Metal Gray Studebaker the year I was 6. I was so proud of that car because the trunk stuck out in the back and I thought people couldn't tell if we were coming or going. The car we had before that was the one they took on their honeymoon, and it had a woolen roof liner which drooped every time it rained. My dad had to put furring strips up to keep the liner in place.

  21. When I was six years old I most often rode in a 1963 Ford Comet. My parents bought it new the year I was born and sold it when I was seven. I loved that car, and I was very sad to see it go.

  22. We rose in the 'rumble seat' of my uncle's car, we didn't have a car. It got mighty cold in there (like the trunk of a car nowadays), so Mother would take blankets for us to snuggle in.

Great giveaway, would love to read...
    Have a fabulous holiday ~

  23. I rode around in my parent's Volkswagon Bus. We used to remove the back two rows of seats and cram the family's bicycles in the back. The kids would sit on the floor in between all the bikes when we rode to the state park to ride our bikes. Good memories!

  24. At 6, I rode in a Ford Galaxie 500. One of the places I remember going was to the drive-in movie in my pajamas to see 101 Dalmatians. The car looked like this: http://i.ebayimg.com/t/1965-FORD-GALAXIE-500-4-DOOR-SEDAN-LIGHT-BLUE-MAGNET-/00/s/MzM3WDU3Mg==/$(KGrHqN,!jEE5s9ii0qoBOcwGTpuiQ~~60_35.JPG

  39. Hi MaryAnn,

I'd love to enter your "Plain Buggies" book give away. What type of transportation did I most often ride in when I was 6 years old? .... We didn't ride in anything. I was raised by my grandma and we lived in poverty. She did not own a vehicle, therefore we WALKED. We walked to our local church on Sundays, walked to 1.5 miles to school each morning, and walked about 2 miles to the local grocery each week.

  40. It was a 77 light green Pontiac - there were three of us girls and I always got stuck in the middle of the back seat as we also called 'the hump'! The floor raised down the middle and my legs were the shortest to fit there!

  41. My parents drove a pink station wagon. My place was to stand on the floor hump, in the back seat.

  42. Very interesting! When I was 6 I mostly rode the school bus :-) Sometimes my sister (much older than me) and her husband would take my mom (who did not drive) and me to their house in their Nash Rambler. My dad worked 7 days a week, but on Wednesday, he would take us to work at the diner we owned in the afternoon after his break, so we could have supper with him and do our grocery shopping. Daddy had a white '57 Chevy.

  43. We had a tan plymouth given to us by my grandfather. The seats had raised flower designs and whenever we went somewhere wearing shorts, we sported those flower indents for hours!
